How to Weld a Butt Joint - Kevin Caron

From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron explains how to weld a butt joint using an arc welder (also known as a stick welder). He shows you how to clamp it, how to tack it and how to weld it ... well, sort of. He also shares a helpful chart of types of butt welds, which you can find at wikipedia.org/wiki/Welding_joints

Hey Kevin I tried your video how to to tap metal with a drill and tap with the drill press using a 6/32 tap and I was really impressed and successfully taped a 1/2 inch rod all the way thru with your technique. Thanks for your intructional videos. You are truly a great artist!.

Thanks for posting this video. I am a newbie welder and was making the mistake of chamfering 1/8" thick square tubing for butt joints. Had serious burn-through as a result, no matter the voltage setting. Much better results with just butting the joints together.

Don't use 1/8 Stick (SMAW) to weld 1/8 thick metal (since you mentioned being inexperienced) practice with a smaller Rod. If you can, use short circuit transfer MIG (GMAW) for Sheet Metal.

I really like these vids that use "our" Lincoln. Also, another means of stabilizing those pieces: have Mary lean on a long chisel, holding them in place... Thanks, guys. Oh yeah, Voice, your education is showing in the quality of questions... Have a great weekend!

I'm from Argentina and starting with the world of welding. I will use it mostly for hobby purposes (and old car of mine) so I'm yet not decided whether to go for the arc or the mig!. Thanks for this wonderful videos.

@kevincaron I really like MIg over stick just because of the cleaner weld from MIG. But if you have to work in the wind outside there is nothing that can top stick welding. Either way have fun and practice, practice and more practice....

MIG with argon or flux core? I'm welding butt joints on 1/4" x 1 1/2" . Planning to use v or double v. with 1/8" or 3/32" 6011 stick. I want the edges to remain parallel and the work to remain perfectly flat. Plan: align pieces either touching or ~1/32" apart; tack one end both sides, tack the other end both sides. Weld the one side of the joint, flip right away and weld the other side. Suggestions? Thanks.

Though I would pass on something I just put together that made clamping small items easier. I got tired of clamping things on the edge of the table, and can't afford a pro-welding table with the holes and all. I got a 3/4" one foot square plate then welded three 1.5 inch pieces of angle iron about 3" long each on the bottom recessed in about 2" from the edge. This afforded me a small "welding" table that I could put on my larger welding table with better clamping and comfort options. Also allowing the ground clamp to be connected directly to it or to the part being welded. (I remember your grounding zap incident.)

@robotmotor I really like this little Lincoln welder. The AC/DC model is even better in my opinion. As for a MIG welder I would have to say a small Miller that will do solid core wire with gas would be a great machine to learn on. I am not a fan of flux core so I would stay away from it. As far as which to learn, stick or mig, I think it all depends on you. If you can afford a mig welder then go that way. If all you can afford right now it arc then there you go.
