To help avoid back pain, wear a back strap. It also helps to keep the accordion on your body when you bend over to pick up a piece of sheet music that fell on the floor. I have been playing for over 50 years and I have no back aches from playing. The aches I get are from setting up and taking down band equipment.
Awesome, Young Man! I have played for many decades and never had it explained to me so easily and professionally! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are a good instructor. Thanks for keeping things simple and to the point. Great job!

Great video, as a freshman I was looking for information like this, to be able to get it right from the start. Thank you very much!
A Great video!... essential viewing for beginner accordionists!! I learned to play the accordion always sitting down and that caused major issues when I decided to play standing up because my left arm & shoulder had no stamina or strength & became exhausted quickly! I think it’s important to do a bit of both always. Also left hand straps adjustment is essential for control of the bellows... If anyone suffers from back problems, a “tie” strap across the back is a must as it stops your shoulders slouching forward! 👍😊

Ooh, good explanation for the back tie strap. What do you use for it? I've seen a friend using a little clip-tie - like you would use to wrap your luggage - and it seemed to work. Thanks for the suggestion!
Totally helpful video. Thank you so much.

beautiful accordion omg
I have two full size accordions (the BIG ones) and I'm so short that when I sit down with them the top comes up to my nose. Both of them need new straps because they're old and even at their tightest position the accordion still sits a bit low. I do have a 120 bass that's a lot smaller (similar to the one in this video), that I mostly use but the reactions I get when people see me playing the full size ones and how big they are are pretty funny. Both my full sizes have REALLY wide extra padded straps and are surprisingly comfortable to play despite their size. (I'm 5'3", so I'm on the shorter side)
Thank you so much 👍😊
Thanks
Hallo Moshe. Thanks for this video i am a beginner with the accordeon but play music for years on keyboard . To play the left side of the accordeon is a little bit heavy
Good Job !

good videos. can you teache minus a major chords with scales? thanks
playing the bass/guitar super low has destroyed many spines so keep that in mind!
Hi Ronen - Very nice way of explaining body-accordion positions. However- age takes its own toll. Having lost approx 4" in height, (never realised till measured in a medical facility) I find it now difficult to play sitting on a chair in an upright manner (wish I could ? ) . I therefore have no choice but to play leaning backwards on a chair as shown by you towards the end of your beautiful video. Besides, the standard length of a 120 bass accordion (Atlantic etc ), is generally 19'' inches and now it leaves hardly any room between the accordion. ( I do not know length of your accordion - guess 18" ?) . It is uncomfortable for sure - but I still enjoy playing it, despite some discomfort- my own way - accordion being my personal obsession - my delightful hobby since my teens ! Just shared my own views and experience- may be of some help to some one in late age group and who enjoys playing this 'prettyful' instrument ? Please keep doing the good work. Warm Regards.
Another thing folks can experiment with is playing with the lower bellows strap done up. It won't suit everyone, particularly those with small accordions, and of course there are minuses to it, but it's the way I play. I find it tires my left arm less, and improves the accuracy of my bass playing.

As you say, everyone has different requirements. To my eye, you wear the accordion an inch or two on the low side, but of course it's 'whatever works'! The name of the game is to wear it in such a way that the keyboard end remains stable, despite whatever heaving you are doing on the bellows. Then there is how you wear it in the 'side to side' orientation. I generally recommend to people that they wear it in such a way that if their nose dripped, it would drip onto the start of the keys. This gives a better angle for the right arm. However, other people might wear it such that their nose drips on the shoulder strap bracket, which gives a better weight distribution and is better on the back for players who do roving gigs. Anyway, it's a good subject to see on KZread.

Thanks for the tips, Peter. I find that when I really get playing, the accordion starts to jostle around. Can probably use a back-strap and the adjustment you said, make things a little tighter. Thanks!
"I don't know why we're playing 'Silver Bells'" - Ronen Segall (5:34) - I love how the music spills out without you having to think about it! I was watching this thinking "I have my straps setup properly"... but I am having some back issues. I have a 48 bass accordion (4X12, no 7s or dims) (12.9lbs?). It's a little smaller than my body, but a solution came to me as I was watching. My trouble is that the accordion, even with the straps all the way long, doesn't reach my lap unless I slouch :), so I'm always "carrying" it with my back muscles, kind of like carrying a baby when pregnant (but I can take it off)! Would it be okay to put a pillow, or roll up a towel underneath so I can rest it on my left leg. I would just need to make sure it doesn't get caught in the bellows, yes? It seems like a feeble excuse to buy a bigger accordion when I'm just a beginner. Or do I just need longer straps?
@moshezuchter
2 жыл бұрын
Ooh, the 48 bass accordion is a tough one. A lot of the weight rests on your neck and shoulders. A pillow is a great idea. I also think you can buy some better/bigger straps for it. Have a look at this video, too, for some tips on accordion placement: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pY2rw7Kag6Sbfs4.html And thanks for the comment! 😊🙌
MY BEST FRIEND BROKE ONE OF THE HANDLES OF HIS ACCORDION AND I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS BECAUSE HE DIDN'T PUT THE ACCORDION WELL. SO I WILL SHOW THIS VIDEO AND I AM GOING TO GIVE AWAY THE CAUSE... LOL
I find it easier to play standing up. I feel like I'm holding the accordion up with my left arm. Is this due to posture? Thank you so much BTW 💜
Have you developed any back pain from playing standing up? My accordion is 30 pounds, so if I play standing up for a long time, I crush my traps and wreck my back. Very good video, but as a general rule, your back should never lean against the chair. You should sit at the very edge of your seat. Cheers!

So... When I play at the farmers market I play standing up for 2 hours. It's not intense music but yeah, I feel the strain a little. I think if I sat down I wouldn't have any back pain. I have a friend who is a chiropractor and I'd love to get her to do a video explaining what happens to our muscles when we play the accordion... But in general playing standing up doesn't cause me pain, but this is after years and years of playing standing up. What about you? I did wind up buying a smaller accordion - the 72 bass Weltmeister - when I had to do a stage show where I played standing up every night for a few weeks.

@@moshezuchter that would be a very interesting video, with a chiropractor. Since you have a lighter accordion, I guess it's not too bad for your back. I only play sitting down though. Check out my new video!
Hi Moshe, I just got a used accordion today and started to learn playing it. Your video is very helpful. Thank you . The accordion guard is such a good idea. You suggested I should get an accordion guard. Mine accordion doesn’t have one, do you know where I could order one? Thank you.

Hi Moshe. I have contacted with Martin. Thank you for helping me.
Hey Ronan I am getting a job at the fair this summer, and I will be playing accordion standing up for several hours at a time. Do you have any tips on reducing back pain when playing. Continuous playing can hurt my back, maybe my straps can be adjusted? (I play on a 120b Noble accordion)
@moshezuchter
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Andy, stretch before and after playing, for sure. Hot water bottles at the end of the day on your lower back before sleep. Get thicker straps (padded) for your accordion - they won't dig in as much. I've seen some people use a lanyard across their back to "tie" their straps together, but I haven't found it overly useful. Your body will adjust after a week of playing every day, but it'll be sore for a bit. Stretching and strengthening will help. Enjoy!!

I have a follow up video where the left strap is slightly tighter than the right so that the keyboard sits right under the chin. Try Martin at tempo trend music for new straps if you're in Canada or Liberty Bellows if you're in the US.
I think I need to adjust mine down a little. My accordion teacher always has me sit at lessons.

So far I can only play sitting down. I also feel that my accordion is a little too big, it is A roland Fr8x, a full size 41 keys 120 bass, and I am not very tall myself and sometimes I can barely reach some of the bass buttons with my pinky, for instance when doing a major scale on the lower part, like Eb.

How does one hit the left hand buttons? I just got an accordion and I'm unable to see the keys on the left hand. Do all of the 4 fingers (excluding the thumbs) play the left hand, or just a select few?
