What a soothing voice. You're the Bob Ross of hat waterproofing. Now you need to beat the devil out of it.

I got the black and brown Dorfman Pacific weathered cotton hats (MC127) and I reshaped them using steam to more of a Western Fedora style with straight brim on the sides and back and down turned brim in front. I then take a mixture of beeswax and Neatsfoot oil and cake them all over and heat with a heat gun. It kind of stiffens the hat which I like and absolutely waterproofs them. I also did this to a similar leather Western Fedora style hat form Levine Hat Co. in St. Louis. Other hats that take this beeswax waterproofing very well are the Browning Rino hats and Browning Dura Wax hats.

Mink oil and applied by hand while wearing rubber gloves is another technique I use for boots an hats.

Sno seal is a bees wax based product that Ive used in the past and it is good but I find that tje leather does not breath as well as with mink oil. Obenaufs is another I will be trying soon, developed for bush firefighters boots evidently it is safe to even use as lip balm.

Dude, same.

Make sure to treat under the brim too, cuz as water runs off the hat, some tends to soffet underneath the brim, soaking into the leather.

I was just wondering about that, I did the outside and was looking at the underside of the brim and thinking about if I should or not

Do you treat the hat band as well. Mine is very similar to yours but could tell from the video.

would Obenaufs hd work too? its for work boots, but it conditions and waterproofs....

Does this stiffen the hat as well? BTW, I have a Minnetonka leather hat as well. Mine is the "Buffalo Nickle" model, which looks much like yours except for the Buffalo Nickle hat band.

+TREMERE1 Nope. It won't stiffen the hat which is good because my hat is nicely broken in. It'll just make it a little waxy to the touch.

Sorry, I'm no expert on hats. I just took what I've learned from treating my boots and applied it to my leather hat and worked great.

First work in petroleum jelly and if the smell bothers you follow that up 48 hrs later with a little coconut oil. Oops I just asked ChatGPT and it suggested Carnauba wax for both water repellency and looks.

Nice looking Hat. Can this be done to a leather Jacket or does it have to be that Suede leather material?

@@JeremiahCraig Thanks for the reply. What about regular Leather? I own a fee Barbour Jackets that are made of heavy cotton and are waxed. Orvis has exclusive jackets made by Barbour for them. Barbour is an English Company, they even make Waxed Caps, Hats and more. Expensive, but made to last a lifetime.

How do you keep the wired brim in shape?

There's actually no wire in my brim.

I have that very Hat. Can you remember where you bought it. Mine has no tag in it. I bought it online some 10+ years ago. The store also had a black and green leather hat that I want. any help would be awesome.

I used to have a straw hat but they never last as long and it go a hole in the top. So right now, I don't have a summer hat.

You can get a hat stretcher, or you can stuff the hat really tightly with paper or cloth and let it sit for a few days. The other way is to put it on your knee and use your hats to pull it to stretch it, just not too hard, dont want to break it.

Thank you for the video. You said once a year, what if you live in a country that rains a lot of times? And I get mine leather hat tomorrow, should I water proof it already?

I have leather hat from Scippis and I live in a very cold climate, where it rains and snows more often than not. Mine was already waterproof when it arrived, I just sprinkled a little bit of water on it to test it. You should not only waterproof it, but clean it first with just a damp cloth (and saddle soap, if you want to) on the Outside/ smooth leather side. Just waterproof it, whenever you recognize, that the leather gets a bit more stiff or that the water starts to be drawn into the leather. Do not use too much fat, or otherwise the leather might get too soft and might even get holes quickly. My father used to take care of his hat monthly and it did get holes, while mine still stays strong after 9 years of almost daily usage.

I would if it were a black or dark brown smooth leather. This product tends to darken the color of lighter leathers

It would but it would take a lot and it makes the leather a bit waxy. which I think is fine on a hat or boots but on a coat it might get a little awkward touching it. Worth a shot though to see if you mind it or not

Did you treat your hat as soon as you got it or did you wait until rain season? I just got mine, but I live in CO and it never rains although it is very dry. Not sure if I should treat it or wait

treat it now with Snow Proof Beeswax.thats the brand name.heat your hat in a warm oven,150 degrees F for a few min...not to hot to touch.or you can use a hairdryer.after heating the pores will be open and the wax will absorb deep into the leather.keep applying until the leather will no longer accept anymore wax.remember this will darken the leather.goodluck.
