Best tutorial I have seen. I have never planted grass seed before (just used sod), but I followed all your steps. You lay them out so well to follow. You even explained how to water so perfectly. You know your stuff. Thanks.

I just re did a portion of my front yard... coming it’s growing like a champ now... people don’t really understand about the watering aspect... I always water 3 times a day until the bed is wet again... if you maintain a good Schedule watering isn’t really a big deal. The peatmoss does work wonders as long as it is a thin layer. Love watching your progress!!!

From northern ireland my garden need some TLC so re seeded my garden started water hopfully it comes up great like yours.. love ur videos watching them all the time ur the gardening GOD in my house hahahahaha

I use the Rachio gen 3, absolutely love it. Easy to use and setup. I have use a 2 zone hose end timer by rain bird and it did a fantastic job when I had no in ground sprinkler. And used it in the same way Ryan does. Made things much easier for me.

Great Video man right to the point love the comments by others below as well. I now have my timer setup for three times a day. Had no clue what to do and they just overseeded my yard. I am happy I ran across your video you just saved me a lot of money.

Ryan Knorr Lawn Care I see a lot night watering here too. Haven’t seen fungus rust or brown leaf spot yet as a walk my dog past those properties. I did water mine at night twice last month total 1.5 in each at 20 min per zone at four cycles to avoid dormancy last month. I did develop brown leaf spot on side of house that is not in full sun (shade of 7 hrs a day). However, I mostly contribute that to over watering because it doesn’t drain well in that area. All other areas of turf are fungus free. I could be lucky though as well as other homeowners too. Humidity has been high last month too.

Man I don't remeber seeing this one. Never thought about how my beater sprinkler could be moving the seed. I have a tri pod model that is really nice for adjustments but if it's moving the seed around that's not good. Just clicked on the link above and saw where you bundled everything and added cost for a reference on your set up. Ryan I'm not pulling your string you really do put a lot of thought into what you post. Your Rye grass will be here today but I think I am going to wait until Fall. I have plans for your blue / rye mix in the fall anyhow so I'm just going to stock up on everything and prep. Love working on my yard and it feeds my OCD...lol

Great idea using sprinkler heads

I think a good idea for those who have the time and dont mind getting up earlier, is to get up early and keep an eye on the soil and see what time it seems to dry out a bit, do this for a few days each day before planting the seed and it’ll you a rough idea of when you need to start watering, once youve started its just a matter of going out each day and checking if the soil is drying and giving it a quick sprinkle with some water to dampen it But that early morning check a few days early might help you learn your soil a bit a better, and if you’re really dedicated you could always water it and time how long it takes to drain.

Hi Ryan. I had a great lawn last year, this year's heat has really taken it's toll. I have kept up with milo and watering with an irrigation system and the lawn is still not where I want it to be. Hopefully the cooler temps will help. Keep up the great vids. John

I started my lawn renovation about a week ago and a half ago and put down Midnight, Bewitched and grand slam. I have some washout and tried to order more seed from seed superstore but it seems the midnight and bewitched bluegrass is no longer available. Do you know if there is a shortage, if they aren’t offering those varieties anymore or what’s going on!?

What was the length you used for the hose in between each of those custom sprinkler heads? Might try a similar set up. Do you notice the last sprinkler losing any pressure? Thanks

I re-seeded some lawn a year ago in the springtime and had some "decent" success except for about 1/3 of the re-seeded area that got too much heat too soon in it's lifecycle. I'm planning to try and spot-seed the bare spots in the fall and also have a whole other area at the other side of the house I'll be completely re-seeding in the fall. I was told by a local landscaper that fall is the best time and will allow it to get more established before the following summer heat kicks in. (I'm in NE Kansas-Zone 6a) What I'm concerned about is all of the leaves that fall from all of the mature (very large) trees in the fall. Wondering if you have a recommendation. If I leave the leaves in place, won't that block the light from getting to the seed? Will the seed germinate and survive anyway?...and if I try and blow the leaves off the seeded area before raking, won't that risk blowing the seed and/or top dressing off? I've gone to a lot of effort ridding the area of weeds and plan to continue gradually prepping the soil until Fall... I really don't want to mess this up and have to start over again next year. What do YOU do to deal with Fall leaves when seeding? One thing I want to mention: 2 years ago I re-seeded a strip of my neighbors lawn where she allowed me to dig up for burying the overhead power lines to my house. I put the seed down in October....watered basically the way you suggest in this video for about 2 to three weeks....didn't let it dry out...but I don't believe I saw a bit of green before it got really cold and I began to wonder if I started too late...but the the next spring it came up awesomely on it's own. I "want" to believe this means the seed can germinate and get semi-established without ever seeing any noticeable growth in the fall...and if that's the case, maybe it doesn't need much sun at that stage and the Fall leaves won't really hurt it?

Great stuff. In MN we have a mild heat wave coming next week (mid 80s). If I seeded this weekend could I still get good results despite the heat by watering a bit more than usual? Or am I better off waiting? I'm using a bluegrass/rye/fescue blend

I believe this is one of the most difficult questions to answer. After a few short weeks of spoiling our grass with water we have to get realistic fast with water amounts and reducing the amount at an appropriate pace, or suffer numerous problems . Should we do this after cutting the grass 3 or 4 times by 50 percent or as little as twice a week , and later once a week ?

I’m seeding as of today 😬. Hope it works! Threw some Micro Greene in there as well. Temps still up to 80 in Ohio. Dropping soon.

what kind of coverage are you getting with your sprinkler setup I have roughly 4000 square feet in my back and front yard and would love to setup something similar in my yard

Ryan, Do you prefer laying down straw, or Peat Moss as a top dressing. I seem to have better results with peat moss.

When it rains it does create puddles. I have hydro seeded now and there was moderate to heavy rain after 4 days that was out of my control. How good/bad is that?

great video. just put seed down and am watering .... day 3. with dogs, I'm thinking of laying straw down lightly on the MUD....what do you think? I don't like the bio degradable cloths you have to stake down.....messy and don't want stakes in the yard. or should I just leave it?

I just put down new seed 11 days ago. I mixed Ryegrass and Kentucky Bluegrass. The grass is coming up about an inch and a half tall now, but I think it is only the Ryegrass since it germinates fast as compared to Kentucky Bluegrass. When do I cut back on watering? Also, is there a way to tell if the Kentucky Bluegrass is germinating too?

I've got my sprinklers set to water each zone from 11am ( after the dew burns off) until 7pm. 8 zones in total , each zone for 15 mins every 2 hours , is this too much?

I live out of AZ, its current 100+ how many times a day should I water and how many minutes ?

Is it okay if I can see the seed on the topsoil? It feels like the seed should be buried in order to germinate and to hold moisture. Is it better to re-rake it or is it okay the way it is?

Does the existing grass burn if I water in the mid afternoon? I've heard ppl say this and for that reason I was only watering in the morning and late evening. But then my seeds were dry by the evening.

Ryan, I really appreciate your videos. I wanted to ask you is there a specific type of sprinkler that works better than the one's you get at Lowe's or Home Depot. I don't have an irrigation system so I use sprinklers. I put a cup in various locations in my yard to measure how much water the grass is getting but after 4 hours I barely have 1/4 of an inch. I've used all types of sprinklers and I get the same result with each one. My yard looks like is has plenty of water because in some areas it puddles but if I go by the amount I see in the cup my yard isn't getting enough water. I could use your advice? Thank you.

Nope as long as the duration is fairly short on those waterings that will be perfect.

Once the grass has germinated how often should I water? I'm about 2 weeks from seed and germination started about 6 days ago. Lots of new grass like 3" tall bit hasnt filled out yet. Right now I'm doing 15 min per zone per day with the oscillator fan type sprinklers. Should I go down to an inch a week now or what?

Hello, so.we just planted seed in like a small area size of a mobile home length, then we put hay on it and watering it for like an hour each spot with a light sprinkler. 2 questions please, is that too much water and how do I know how long I do this for? Is like weeks that I water like this before the grass grows? I know dumb right? I live in Wisconsin from los Angeles so yeah big difference from an ocean to a lake hahah. Thank you

Thanks for confirming that impact sprinklers are bad! Witnessed the seed movement and quickly added a layer of straw. Any thoughts on hay or straw - very popular in the NE USA.

I used straw last Spring. No issues....but I did also put down "Scotts Turf Builder - Triple Action - Built for Seeding" which contains a pre-emergent, I believe....but (somehow) doesn't prevent the grass seed from germinating. Will probably do the same again with a new area I'm seeding in the Fall. I prefer it over peat moss. Seems to stay in place and hold seed in place better than peat moss "would" (I admittedly have not tried peat moss) and I also don't need to be adding any more acidity to my my soil.

Should I rake before hand or not rake? Suggestions please!!

Awesome video as always. Would I have to use the Pete moss on an overseed project? I know I do on the bare areas I killed off and scalped down but what about the areas that still are full lawn and just overseeding? Thanks

How much should we worry about peat moss and it's acidity? If I have less than 1/4 of an inch, do I still need to add limestone? Great videos Ryan :)

I'm just starting out with my backyard which is small. How long should a sprinkler system run every 3 hrs? I live in south carolina which is very hot around this time of year so will this be a battle trying to grow grass or should I wait later in the season.

*Great video! if you don't mind - I have a sept 17th first frost date coming up, is it ok to put down fall fertilizer after that date? I read somewhere that it takes 5 nights of 45-50 deg day time and 30F overnight - for grass to stop growing. When should that last fall fertilization go down? Should I stick to a 12-0-18 fall fert? or should I go with a high 30-0-10 fert??*

I would do the higher nitrogen now and then you are correct, right around consistent temps of 45-50 is when the grass will stop growing and you can do the fall fert then if you would like.

My new grass seed for the most part is up about 1/2 to 1 inch. Should I really water this seeded area in a lot now or keep watering like I Was when I was just keeping the seed moist? Love your videos and thanks so much.

I usually keep watering fairly consistently until you start mowing it and then you can start to back it off to a little less often but heavier watering in one sitting

Standard ol' clak-clak-clak rainbird or bust! Only sprinklers worth using most of the time. :D And yes, rainbirds work just fine on a fresh seed.

Thanks for the sharing, Ryan! Your videos offered a lot info for first-timer like me! For the watering after seeding, how long should I water for the afternoon session, like 20-30mins? Also, there is saying about watering only in early morning and after sunset, is it alright to water at 2pm as suggested? or the 2pm watering would be extremely light (5-10 mins)?

The time needed is to get the seed wet without puddling so that will vary depending on your sprinklers. Middle of the afternoon is no issue

I have purchased a few timers(orbit and rainbird) in the past and noticed that both reduce water pressure significantly to a point where the sprinkler doesn't operate properly. I have decided to run the system manual in the mornings

I have noticed the drop in water pressure with the timers as well.

I just seeded a new patch in my yard about 25 ft long by 20 feet wide that used to be a pea gravel pad. The seed is coming in nice, I'm wondering at what point I should seed again to help fill it in? I'm trying to grow as much as I can before winter arrives here in Wisconsin. Appreciate any input!

You said in previous video in regards to overseeding (a lawn with some grass on it) to wait a few days before putting down fertizilier, as it will cause the current grass to grow and shade out the sunlight for the new seed. So ,y question is, when I lay the see, do i still put the Peat Moss on top? If I do, how do I get the fertilizier (two days later) on the seed?

Yes with overseeding I always waited on fertilizer but did not cover with a topdressing. If you did cover you could still fertilize on top of that covering and it will break down as you are watering.

What about the impact of walking on the newly seeded areas while you're hand-watering? Should this be avoided at all costs?

Hi Ryan. I am a first timer and I watched all of your great videos to educate myself. First off, thanks a ton for making all these lovely videos. I am however in a great dilemma. Long story short, I followed every single step you suggested (4 months work to prepare the 1200 sqft backyard) and finally planted my tall fescue seeds (I live in SF) last weekend. I raked it lightly and then covered it with Sloat’s forest mulch (bark and chicken manure) as suggested by local nursery. The problem is, even after covering with 1/4” of mulch, I still see a ton of seeds on top of mulch. I am watering as you recommend but should I pause and add more (mulch?/peat moss?) on top of existing mulch to cover more? Seeing those seeds are making me super nervous that it might not turn out as well :(

If you rolled them in or raked in lightly it should be fine even if you're seeing things on the surface

Hi Ryan thanks for all your videos. Currently here in Montreal Canada it's about 86 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. I water at 10am then 2pm then 4:30pm. When I come home around 6:30pm there are some spots still wet and there are other spots which are already dry on the top. No amount of watering will keep those areas wet by the time I get home. Is that ok? It seems like trouble spots and seed is having trouble growing there I'm not sure if that is ok to be dry after a few hours or if I'm being too careful. What do you think?

The best would be to have them not dry out at all but hand water those spots when you can and overall you should be ok.

I personally like a little bit of cover on them but as long as they are touching the soil, they should germinate just fine. Rain can always be an issue with wash out but you may just have to touch up the seeded areas as necessary.

Placing the sprinklers in series may not be the best option for those with less than high pressure from your outdoor faucet. It may be better to get a multi zone timer and program it at different time intervals for better lawn coverage. I did this method and he last sprinkler head was just dripping out some water and the first sprinkler had a strong water supply

can you have some passes with the roller over the peat moss before watering?

I suppose you could but it's kind of light and fluffy so when you start watering, it moves a little bit anyway.

TJ Nearly identical. I’m dealing with typical compacted clay in MO. A few heavy applications of turf-safe weed killer, followed by roundup on stubborn weeds about a month or so before scalping, then double aeration, top dressed with compost by the same crew to increase organic matter. I wasn’t in. A position to seed between aeration and top dressing since I wanted to seed myself and the crew wanted to do both on the same day. That was ok, since I still spread a lot of new topsoil with the back edge of a garden rake, so the seed was still going to be in contact with soil. I leveled several low spots with approx 50/50 sand and topsoil with the same spreading technique. Seeded then peat moss, and water on non-rain days. I wasn’t even as consistent with watering as I would have liked, but I did water more in areas bordered by the driveway/street since we’ve had some warmer days, and the peat moss helped to retain the moisture. It IS a messy job, but short of a peat moss spreader, it really is the best application method. Or you could be lazy like me and throw shovel fulls into general areas and then spread it out from there as needed. Fortunately I have a grain shovel which is large, ideal for large volumes of lightweight material. Good luck!

urgent! I followed your video for reseeding the lawn. now with Peat Moss at the top and watered. water does Not go thru the Peat Moss. Water saturated top layer of Peat Moss but does not go thru. What should I do?

The peat being wet keeps that moisture right on the seed and should still work fine...I've used it many many times with great success.

Just put my seed down yesterday, here’s to hoping the rain forecast is right as it’s supposed to rain 6 out of the next 9 days.

I hear ya there. The 10 day forecast here has thunderstorms pretty much every single day so I'm a little puzzled at what I'm going to do about that.

There some pretty decent timers out there these days that should be able to help

I live in Massachusetts and just aerated and over seeded my lawn a couple days ago. My town has a water ban in effect where I can only water with a hand held device and NOT between the hours of 9am-5pm. The temps overnight range from 55-65 and 65-80 during the day. Takes me just under 2 hours to water the entire lawn for approximately 10 mins in each area from 7am-9am and 5pm-7pm. I'm worried that the seeds may dry during the day and watering later in the evening may cause diseases as the sun sets around 7pm. There is a bit of dew in the morning while watering. Should i water a bit less both in the morning and evenings or just take my chances and water later in the morning and earlier in the evening....... just moved to this town so I could play the ignorance card lol. Great videos !!

I just seeded a portion of my backyard. I live in MA, its spring, temp is in high 60's during the day, the high 40s at night, with moderate spells of medium level rain and some sunny days. Is it ok to water once/daily at around 2am? Or should I increase the frequency of watering to twice / daily? If the latter, what are optimal times. When should I expect to see results? Thx.

You'll have to watch it and see if it's drying out. It will hold moisture longer with those temps but still might need a couple light apps per day

I have a question and I need all the advice please. I have a new built property and around my home it’s really sandy soil like it looks 100% sand And I’m trying to grow grass there are spots here and there where grass has come up but really spotty what kind of grass seeds and what procedure would you suggest for me to get grass.. i’m not sure if you already have a video or not but I definitely just subscribed and would love any of your suggestions one more thing I have no knowledge regarding growing grass Or any terms LOL if you can give me a step-by-step process will be great my lawn looks like a desert Also what would be the best products to get

What is the peet mo stuff that is spread on top of the grass , to hold water ? and what about straw, will that work ? Or is peet mo the best..

It holds moisture and keeps the seed in place so birds don't take it away. I tried straw in a different section last year and I don't like it compared to the peat. The straw takes a long time to break down and is just messy. Peat is my vote

If I’m re-seeding my grass do I water right after? Or do I wait one or two days?

ADAM ARELLANO watering as soon as you can will help the chances of germination. Obviously seed to soil contact is another huge factor, but throw some water down as soon as you can.

I have what seems like heavy clay type yard. Can I just go through the steps of the videos and it will grow grass?

I picked up 11 hunter (3 zones) MP’s after watching your sprinkler video 4 or 10 times over the past few days. I’m going to do the same setup you got for now for the renovation process and if it turns out well I will probably bury it next fall when over seeding. Rain threw me off my plan for this weekend so shooting for next weekend. Only issue I have is I have a few areas that are not as level as I would like. I’m going to try and smooth them out but feel I’m probably going to have to bring in top soil next year here and there.
