Here in Australia the only place you'll find a kitchen sink that big is in an industrial or business setting. Our sinks are about a quarter of what you have, which automatically saves a huge amount of water (and energy costs for heating that excess water.) EDIT - my single sink holds only 14.4 litres or 3.8 gallons. Pretty average for Australia. Obviously, you don't put 14 litres in to wash, or you'll overflow once dishes are in.

I'm from Mexico, we have waaaaayyyy smaller sinks and dishwashers are very rare, we don't fill the sink to wash the dishes, we put some soap in a sponge, scrub all the dishes and then just rinse them, no need to have a pool in your sink

i totally agree with you it seemed little bit rude to say ‘no one asked ‘ pluse the video claimed the most sustained dish washing method which is absolutely wrong I mean the soap and sponge is much water saving but the most sustainable will be washing dishes with sand the using sponge and waster this way all composted mix uk directly to soil pluse it gives rough scrub for oily and stubborn spots

Yeah most modern dishwashers are more sustainable than handwashing, you could fit way more than this into even a little one, but try explaining that to anyone over 40 here in Ireland (who tend to be the home owners and house-share landlords and REFSUE to put dishwashers into their rentals) 🙄🙄 I tend to only handwash single items that I intend to reuse soon like tea cups

Even a half full dishwasher is more heater efficient than hand washer. Now if you put it in light wash that and no pre soak that will help too. Plus the heated water will sanitize the dishes. The soap is important but the heat is arguably more important

Things don’t have to be totally sterilized just clean, so for anyone who thinks they have to sterilize your dishes you don’t. My Mom has an autoimmune disease so I have thought about doing the dishwasher because we would be the folks who actually would need their dishes sterilized but my Mom has lived my whole life without using the dishwasher so I think that would just be overkill. I don’t like to put stuff in the dishwasher, doesn’t feel right as I grew up hand washing, I’m 18 so it can happen to anyone just depends on how you grow up. I always wash the dishes a day after so they don’t pile up. Do dishwashers waste less water? I always let the water get super hot before I use it to wash dishes and it takes a minute or two, then fill all the dishes up one by one or spray them, then start with the one I first put the hot water in. I am definitely not as efficient as her when it comes to rinsing especially since I have to put the water cooler so I’m not in pain and I forget that a lot so it takes time so maybe ten to fifteen seconds to rinse. I also don’t have that many dishes to wash at a time but that also means I’m washing more frequently so I don’t know if that counterbalance it or which one is better, not sure how often she washes but I’m assuming a week and some days, maybe a little longer, if she lives by herself to accumulate those dishes.

We have one but barely use it. We used to own an electrolux rex line one that was 10 years old when it broke. And since we are only three living there we fully transitioned to hand washing. We got the same dishwasher just a newer model but since we don't make as many dirty dishes it's actually more efficient to do it by hand or we're left with no dishes at all before it fills up. It's because we don't eat much and we don't cook big hefty meals being just me at home for lunch and three people for dinner. I just open and close the tap to waste less water. We do use the dishwasher only when we cook hefty meals or my mom doesn't feel like cleaning. Plus I do the dishes in the mid to late afternoon whilst the dinner dishes get done in maximum an hour or two after dinner. Just in time for my brother who comes home late to eat. We're super efficient. Also I think soap kills enough bacteria in my opinion.

​@@41052I mostly hand wash too and I agree with you. I make sure there are no dishes in the sink by the time my mom's at home and we clean dinner's dishes almost right after we're done eating. It takes me maximum fifteen minutes to clear up my lunch and breakfast dishes. And it's usually a coffee cup, my brother's Starbucks cup, a tea mug a pot a plate and some cutlery. I open and close my water everytime to save it which drives my mom insane as the water doesn't get hot enough. But I'm pretty sure the soap is sanitizing the dish enough. Sometimes using the dishwasher if it's just three people in the house is just not efficient.

I love my dish washer. Mine is actually a glorified dish drainer.

quick tip from a culinary worker! we fill only a bowl with soapy water that's enough to rinse and re-soap the scrubber. when you leave the dishes that have caked on scraps on them under the faucet, the first rinses will provide enough water to soften what's left inside. something that might help is also warm water :) also, was that bowl made from clay? cause girl you got my heart stopping when you scraped it with that fork god damn!

​@@0Milena_aneliM0The biggest factor in making items last a long time, and staying in good condition, is proper care and maintenance. Super easy and inexpensive, just get a silicone scraper and keep it beside your other dishwashing necessities. You can get them at the dollar store. Use a silicone spatula if that's all you have. Even if the bowl is wood, it won't last long if it is continually scraped with a metal fork. If you want to save as much time as possible, you need things that are low maintenance. I can set a pile of really dirty glass plates to soak in hot, soapy water, or run them through a dishwasher, and they'll be fine. My wooden items are what I consider high-maintenance. They have to be kept dry until you wash them, as soon as possible, and then dried right away (air drying is the most sanitary way when hand washing, and wooden items that dry fast can be dried this way if you shake off the excess water and place on an absorbent mat/cloth). They usually need to be wiped with food grade mineral oil or special oil made for cutting boards and wooden dishes; frequency varies from once in a while to every time. Otherwise they will chip, splinter, crack, absorb moisture and be ugly and unsafe pretty quickly. Fine china, metals, lots of things can be used every day (I do!), and caring for them doesn't take much time, but it has to be done if you want these items to last and stay beautiful.

Instead of filling your sink, you can fill a dish tub or even a large pot, especially if your sink is this large.

I like this too, especially if you use the big pot with the heavy stain (not heavy food) so it can soak in the hot soapy water while scrubbing all the other dishes

I personally don't put any water in to start. I plug the sink, get my scrubber soaped up, and scrub the dishes as I fill the sink with them. Then, when the sink is full, I rinse all of them at once. This gets some water in the bottom. I work easiest to hardest, so that by the time some of the more stubborn dishes make it to the sink there's some nice hot water in there.

Our dishwasher is filled and turned on every day we just bought a brand new one after the old one finally broke (after living with dishwashers 15-20 yo) and it's very energy efficient. I belive if I was to hand wash them all I'd use a lot more water

For her, assuming it's a house of two people who have the time & effort to happily do this, hand washing is more suitable for them! I personally live alone & it would take me up to 2 weeks to completely fill up a dishwasher, but I'd be likely to run the dishwasher every 3 days because certain things run out quicker than others & I'm wanting things washed sooner. By hand washing, I can wash a particular item when I need it then wash everything else that builds up once a week (my sink is a quarter of the size of hers, I use maybe 7 litres/2 gallons of water for the amount of dishes she had - half of which is for the soapy water & half used in rinsing). My aim is not even to try use less water or be eco, it just works for me. If I had a dishwasher in my house, I'd probably use it way too regularly because I'm the type to pick the less labour involved option

I stopped fiiling the water up. I put my dishes to the side of the sink and soap my sponge up and clean them and put them in the sink as I go. Then when I’m done I use most of my water rinsing them, but I keep it on low so I don’t use much water.

@freedomcat some people do that. It's gross. They make you a cup of tea and you can see bubbles on top 🤢. Or some people do that and rinse before they use them. My method is not to fill the sink but to do the dishes under running water so everything gets rinsed as I go but oh I cannot wait to have a dishwasher again. Miss having a dishwasher more than any of my exes haha.

I would never think of not using a smaller tub inside that sink. It's so big!

As a carribbean, we just place a tub of soapy water inside of the sink so everyone can wash their own dish instead of it just piling up. Lol

We do the three steps where we live in the philippines. First is fill up a mid size basin to pre-wash the dishes free of the "dirt", 2nd is the washing with soap and last is the rinse. Basically, Clean, Soap and Rinse.

Dishwasher is the best way and uses hardly any water. Most use less than 3 gallons of water, and you can put WAY more in them than you washed here. Hand washing uses way more water and doesn't clean the dishes as well.

Most British sinks arent this big, and we tend to use a plastic washing up bowl that lines the sink, fill that with soapy water and when its time to rinse, remove the soapy bowl full of dishes and rinse all the items through the running tap and place on the drying rack on the side of the other side of the sink.

I use two tubs of water in my sink, one for washing, after scraping, the other one for rinsing, and I use the water afterwards for flushing the toilet

I come from a country where water is scarse. So what we do is fill the containers (1 medium and 1 small) the small one with soppy water and the big one with clean water, you start with cups, less dirty, clean with natural sponge or the regular ones and then splash in clean water, then you left them to air dry.

You could put a wash pan in the sink and just fill that. I have a double sink, on one side I put the soapy water and on the other some plain water, wash the dish a dip in the plain water to rinse.

I use my dishwasher every night, it had an option to only use 3 gallons of water and my dishes are sparkling.

So it takes a bunch of time and effort, uses the same amount of water, and is a much smaller number of dishes. I'm having trouble understanding the benefit here.

Her sink is excessively large. My sink holds about 5 gallons. I use less than 2.5 gallons to wash my family's daily dishes. You definitely don't need a 25 gallon sink. She is wasting water.

Doesn’t your water just get recycled back into the city or county water system? If it does, there’s no need to really “conserve” water. It gets reused and recycled lol.

A high efficiency dishwasher can wash a full load with about 5-8 gallons of water. Dishwashers are more eco friendly because you can do way more dishes for less water than by hand and they get cleaner because of the temperature.

That's still a lot of water. Most countries don't have huge sinks like the sink in this video. It seems like everything is excessive and wasteful in the U.S. I can wash the daily dishes for my family with less than 10L (2.5 gallons) of water.

Brit here with a small sink. Glasses and mugs are washed and rinsed as the sink is filled. Plates, bowls and cutlery are put in, pans next, greasy grills and pans last.

The difference made by just washing the dishes and carefully measuring out how much water to use before washing the dishes is tiny. It isn't worth the energy.

The most sustainable way to start washing your dishes is to finish the meal 🙂

The luxury of living alone 🤩 I live in a home of a family of 7-8 and let me tell u… when i do the dishes at the end of the day, i stand up for at least an hour to do the whole thing! I do use our dishwasher sometimes, but me, as a dishwasher myself, hate it because it does not take care of all the gunk all the time. And i feel like, having that small amount if dishes, youd save more water by not filling your sink up with it before u scrub the dishes

It depends on the dishwasher and how much water is used for handwashing. For many years my family couldn't afford a dishwasher. I used much less water than this person uses in the video to wash our family's daily dishes. About 10L.

If dishwashers are more energy efficient and is better at saving water but a few gallons, why not just use the dishwasher?

Just do it like we do here and dont rinse(a common practice here in Australia) growing up we used to use a 4L icecream tub to fill with water so you could pour any dirty soaking water down the sink without dirting your water, clean from clean to dirty and we used around 12L a day for a family of 7

we have sinks like a quarter of that size, and for the most part, we do the same process in washing the dishes. But we tend to scrub all the dishes first, before the final rinse. It sames more water by not rinsing each dish right after scrubbing. Also, as a Filipino, we rarely have dishwasher at home... so once all dishes are clean and dry, that's good for us

I just start washing the mildy dirty dishes while the dishes that need a soak sit in the sink. Then you just wash those. My sink is probably half the size of hers. I love watching vids like these.

I usually fill a little bowl with dishsoap and hot water and use that with a dish sponge and use that water for all of the dishes and then rinse them of all at once, easier, cleaner dishes and saves water, in my opinion the best way

My best sustainability tips come from the poverty I grew up in. Early 2000s, back home in Poland we used to wash dishes like that but in tiny sinks. Firstly we would wash glasses as they’re not greasy and least dirty, then plates and bowls and pans at the end. All in the same water and we would always rinse it in cold water to save up money. We’d never threw away food. If we had a slice of bread that wasn’t too fresh we’d dry it and make bread crumbs out of it. We ate all sorts of animal parts including liver or chicken feet. Chicken broth can easily last 5 days being transformed into different dishes. We pickled our own veggies. Bought second hand furnitures. Swapped things such as clothes or school books. And so on 😊😉

If you're going to wash dishes in a single sink, you always want to go from least to most in terms of dirtiest not all at once. Or it should be glasses and cups first, then silverware then plates/bowls and finally pots and pans.

Housekeeper here : for water economy, if you have a double sink then fill one to a third with warm water and dish soap, the second one with clear water to a third too, dunk and wash your dishes in the soap sink and then dunk them in the second sink to rince them and then dry them with a towel. If you have a single sink then get a basin close to the sink size and do the same thing, soapy water in the bassin and clear water in the sink. You can change the water when it gets too dirty. It helps you economise a lot in the long run, even a quick 3 second water use per dish consumes a LOT of water (an american kitchen faucet gives per average 2 to 3 gallons per minute, the average american household consumes 100k gallons of water per year, 50/70% is used on the outdoors (car washing, lawn care...) So it's a lot).

If you have a garden, you could also install a rainwater collector, during autumn you can fill easily your sink with the water you'll get. Also you can flush your toilet with rainwater you'll save money. However they do tend to be expensive (in France some town halls give us a discount so it's more common here).

New diswashers are energy star and use less than 5 gallons for a load, for twice as many dishes as what you washed. Sometimes manual isnt actually conserving anything.

Firstly I rinse a dish by opening the faucet for like 2 second, then turn off the faucet and clean the dish with soap and then again rinse it for 3 seconds…. We don’t soak all of the dishes, just larger pots

Also, dishwashers are only efficient to a point where there are too many/ little dishes, and many households really don't use that goldilocks zone of just enough dishes for a dishwasher (or enough utensils for some to sit it in the washer, waiting for more utensils before a cycle) to be worth the investment so don't go too hard on people who prefer handwashing lol 😂

Everybody is talking about the sink size, but I'm just happy about this channel. I want humans to live like this in the futur - no matter their incomes. These are long term options. I also hope they'll cost less with time and increased popularity. This is how *I* want to live honestly. I've just had too much kk my plate recently to really think about my footprint, but it's a real interest and desire of mine.

We use a plastic dishpan on one side of the sink.

I like to put everything in the sink with all the food scraped off, then let a bit of water run over my tower? Use a brush to loosen in all up tipping the water from the top to over the tower again and again, then get my soap on my brush since I use a soap bar, and soap scrub them all, and then rinse them all off, uses barely eny water, the most is when rinsing

This has been a video I’ve actually thought about while I’m doing my dishes. I’m coming across it now for the second time and I just wanted to leave a comment and say that your videos are educational and helpful, thankyou☺️

I use two relativly big plastic bowls that would fit my biggest pot, one for cleaning and one for rinsing. I fill them to half and clean. and thwn use the water to water big trees. just keep in mind if you use bleach or some other product aside from regular dish soap then don't use it on plants.

Love your technique! I tend to wash all my dishes in one go without the water running, then clean the sink, and set stuff in the bottom and rinse it all together

Fun fact, most modern dishwashers have become extremely effective in not wasting as much water as they used to, pretty sure mine only uses about 3L of water on heavy :))

Since this point wasn't really made, it is usually far more efficient to use the dishwasher than to handwash, especially the new dishwashers. They are incredibly efficient.

Maybe you do, but you should write a book 😅. I’m not on social media much and a book with all of your wonderful tips, resources, and reasonings would be lovely. Or recommend one too 😂❤. I’m built my way up to this and I love it. Very stress free and I find myself only going to the store for food or a new plant to love. I hardly stop in the cleaning sections anymore with all those bottles, chemicals, and waist of paper products.

I live on a wilderness homestead with a hand dug shallow well. I have to rinse my dishes in water collected from the town deep well as mine is not drinkable water so to be safe I rinse off any coliforms (there is no e-coli). As a result I use less as I don't run the tap to rinse, I use a camping tote of the safe clean water that has a tap on it that hangs over the sink edge. I drain the sink after washing with my well water then place a plastic basin in the sink and rinse the dishes with the safe water. I then use the rinse water collected in the basin for house plants rather than put it down the drain, even city people can do that. If I do any water bath canning all the water in the pot goes into the sink to wash dishes later. that uses rain water I collect and a USB showerhead. I also have an outdoor shower during warm months that uses rain water I collect and a USB showerhead. Now that I live out here like this I'm shocked at how much water I used to waste in the city.

What I don't understand is how highly technologically developed countries like the US do not have dishwashers in like 8 out of 10 households. I'm a broke German student and I cannot go without one, you save so much time with a dishwasher, especially when you're a large family or into cooking, and even if you're not a dishwasher is a luxury I wouldn't want to miss

Just a suggestion you could use two bowls one of a soapy solution and the other of water to rinse . This would save water and make it easier to make use of the water in other ways like in your garden. You can always refill the bowl for rising if it becomes too soapy

I have so many notes…first of all, no one’s sink in that big. Secondly, you’re using way more water than the avg person washing dishes because first you WASH THE SINK then FILL IT UP WITH WATER then RINSE YOUR DISHES. Most people will scrub and rinse and just wipe down the sink after.

I am from Mexican decent. I keep a 32 oz cup, squirter soap, add water to that. Dip the sponge and/or brushes in the cup. We don't fill up the sink, rinse all the dishes with 3 second rule. Sponge gets rinsed throughout the process to keep soap clean.

We have much smaller sinks here in the UK too but most people use a plastic basin that fits inside the sink - fill that with the soapy water, then you can still rinse a dish over the side using the tap & it flows outside the basin & keeps that dirtier water out of the washing water, then wash in order of least to most dirty, one item at a time, glasses, cups, plates, then pans, and change the soapy water as required, no need to fill basin more than 1/3-1/2 full each change, also I only rinse glasses & leave everything else to air dry in a rack, I’m a rubbish house-keeper but quite picky about how to do washing-up and avoid leaving the tap running 😎

Not sure how much better this is, but if you don't wash your dishes right away, you can soak them while they are dirty (fill the item with water, don't submerge it in water). Then once you are going to wash them, just add soap to the sponge and soap all the dishes at once. Rinse on a low water stream all at once, put away on dryer rack as you rinse each dish. Ideally, this is best done with two people when you get to the rise stage so someone can put away the dishes as you finish rinsing then. But you can also just stack them again.

or just fill the basin 3 times, first wash you wash all the gunk out of the plates then scrub them, 2nd wash to remove the suds, and the 3rd time for the final wash. We did this when the water shuts of in our area. great way to conserve water and make sure to keep your dishes clean

I use 2 tubs, one for hot soapy water, the other for rinsing. I do this mostly because I don’t have running water but it means I can do all my dishes on just 3 gallons

A big thing that detracts people from using dishwashers is that nobody learns to maintenence them, with regular deep cleaning and making sure all the parts are intact, a dishwasher will be far superior in every single way, that is of course if you use the best dishwasher soap, being DRY SOAP, which big companies will tell you to use pods which are so stupid and barely even work as a prewash

In my Indian household, we put a little water on our dirty dishes as it stops the food from drying on the empty vessel/dish. Then i since the dish with a little water, then apply soap with sponge on all dishes and then i rinse off the dishes

tip from an Indian daughter who learned this from her mom: Our sink is as big as this one so mom fits smaller utensils into the bigger utensils, I mean the layer 1st the biggest than smaller than that then smaller one gradually and put spoons and all at last in the smallest one.. the gaps are enough to make the dish soak which makes it easy to scrub.. and once you start to scrub transfer the water from previous one to the next utensils.. no water wastage..
