How to Wartermark and Batch Watermark Photos in Photoshop
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, I will explain how to add a watermark to a photo in Photoshop using both text and graphics. I will then explain how to automate this using Photoshop actions. After this, I explain how to automate adding a watermark to a photo using the Action and the Batch Automation in Photoshop. This allows you to quickly and automatically add your watermark to many images and save them with a new file name.

Great to know this has helped you. I'm also a big fan of automation. There are better things to do with your time than repeat the same thing hundreds of times (but more slowly).
Best instruction I have found. Even the software doesn’t give as good detailed directions on how to perform this action. Especially with batch WM. Thanks!!

Glad it helped and good luck with so many images to process. You may want to look into creating a Droplet. You can do this in the File | Automate menu. It's a long time since I've used them but they allow you to process Actions against folders full of files without needing to have Photoshop open. It may allow you to get on and do other things while images are being watermarked.

This is great Robin thanks! I have a question about taking this one step further no one has been able to answer... What if I have an excel sheet or text file with rows of different text, say states, cities, or quotes. How would I be able to bulk merge the quote with an image in the order I want? For example, the images folder contains in order pictures of Washington, Lincoln, and Obama while another folder or file has their respective quotes in order. Now to merge all of them?

I can understand what you are trying to do but I don't think the automation in Photoshop is sufficiently advanced to do this currently.
To place it say in the right hand top corner when recording the action you can select both layers, choose the move tool use the align options. Then you can use the arrow tools to move it in a bit and down a bit as required. I found the gotcha was some files opened with background others with layer (they were a mixture of tif files). So selecting the bottom layer was not going to always work. The workaround was to select all, duplicate layer via copy, flatten - then proceed with the selection... you might not need that step though.
Hi, THank you so much. Btw, how to automatically save as/export it to JPG. so i don't want to have psd as my result, just jpg.
@RobinWhalley

It's the same approach. When you record the macro, set the save option to be JPEG rather than PSD. You'll just lose the option to adjust things later if something doesn't work.

Is there a way of integrating a preset destination location for the watermark within the action sequence? (eg. 50 pixels from left border and 50 pixels from the lower border) thx
@RobinWhalley
3 жыл бұрын
Not as easily as it sounds. The only way that I can think of is to select the watermark layer and the image background layer together using the move tool. You can then click the Align Left followed by Align Bottom icons in the Move Tools toolbar. This gets the watermark to the bottom corner. After that you can drag it inwards with the Move Tool to include some space. Alternatively you could include the border space in the watermark. I recorded those steps and it seemed to work OK.

Hey thanks for the great tutorial! It works great, but is there a way to batch export them all as well? Edit: I found a way, you can use File > Scripts > Image Processor instead of batch as trying to export in the recording didn't work for some reason. But if you know a way to do this in the initial batch process that would be amazing other wise auto exporting after the auto watermarking isn't that bad.
@RobinWhalley

Photoshop treats Export the same as Save As. It's a legacy feature so you are better using the Save As command where you also have more formats you can use.
Thank you for the batching info, one question I have is can these be directly saved as jpg file instead of the psd?
@RobinWhalley

In the Batch dialog, under the Destination section, there is an option to "Override Action Save As". When this is ticked, you aren't prompted with the save dialog and Photoshop will save to the existing file. Just be sure to test your Action first using a folder of test images, before applying it to your original images.
can you save as jpeg or for web using this method?
@RobinWhalley
Жыл бұрын
Yes you can but if you save your image in the JPEG, PNG or WebP format you can't move the watermark. If that's important to you I would add a step in the macro to save the image twice. Once in the Photoshop format so you can move the wartermark and again as output for web which can also include resizing the image.
Thank you for this informative tutorial sir!

Does anybody know how to set it so the watermark goes into a specific place instead of the middle?
Depending on orientation or filesize the watermark will land alway in the middle. What I want is, that the watermark is in the down right corner always in the same distance to the edge of the image and the same size relative to the width. How would I do that?
@RobinWhalley
Жыл бұрын
I don't know if that's possible using the Actions. The movement of objects is recorded as relative to their current position. You really need it to be relative to a document co-ordinate to do it automatically.
I did everything you said it kind of worked except when i batched it , most of the pictures had half the logo, how do i fix that
@RobinWhalley
2 жыл бұрын
It's very hard to say without seeing your computer, images and batch process. I'm guessing, but your images might be different sizes and use different aspect ratios which will cause the logo to shift position.
i do not seem to have the "watermark" option in the "Batch" menu screen am i missing something or is this just not available for CS6 ?
@RobinWhalley
2 жыл бұрын
You only have the Watermark option if that's what you called your Macro when you saved it. I'm pretty sure CS6 worked the same way.
I've referenced your video before to make batch watermark actions. Something broke over time and I had to make a new one. But now I have a new problem. WHen I set everything up and press Okay in the Batch menu, the automation runs, but all it does is save every watermarked file as the same file name (ex. IMG 1_watermarked.jpg), automatically overriding it. So an image that should be saved as "IMG_15_watermarked" is instead saved as "IMG_1_watermarked" and is the only image file saved to the folder. IMG_2 overrides IMG_1, IMG_3 overrides IMG_2, etc. I hope I'm being clear enough.
@RobinWhalley
2 жыл бұрын
It souds like you may have saved the file naming as part of the action. You need to handle the file naming in the Batch dialog (File | Batch in the menu). That's where you can define to append "watermarked" to the original file name to produce a new unique name. I hope that sorts it out for you.

I’m pleased you managed to get it working. Sorry I couldn’t say what the problem was. It’s hard when I can’t see the macro or the batch settings. The other alternative to batch watermarking that I’ve been using recently is a custom watermark brush. You can then add the watermark anywhere with a single click. I published a video about this using Affinity Photo recently but you can do the same in Photoshop.
how would i get it to automaticly export the image to jpeg? i dont need the psd files. **edited** i dit what Robin did and after that i used the image processor to batch export them to jpg. its an extra step but workt very well.

extra question @RobinWhalley what if one of the pictures in the batch has a different size, say portrait instead of landscape
@RobinWhalley
Жыл бұрын
@@sophiemulders Then it probably wouldn't work automatically and you might need to move the watermark. If you want to watermark lots of different sized images then consider saving your watermark as a custom brush. You can then apply it to any image with a single click. It's an alternative approach that's a little more manual but still saves a lot of time.

@RobinWhalley

If the paste feature isn't available then it means you haven't selected and copied anything to the clipboard. You may think that you have but for some reason it hasn't worked. This usually happens because there is nothing selected at the time you try to copy.
I'm trying to save as JPG, but the export part won't save in my action. Any tips?
@RobinWhalley

Do you know for certain that the Save As step hasn't been recorded in the Action whilst other steps are? Have you checked you can see each step in the Actions Window but not the Save As? If this is the case then I'm sorry I don't know what's causing it. If however you are trying to play the action as part of a batch to process and the Save As dialog doesn't show then its likely to be an option in the Batch dialog. There is an option there to Override the Save As dialog when the destination is recorded as part of the Action. From memory I think you need to uncheck this which will cause the dialog to display for each image that's saved.
I did everything as you did, but the error message "The command 'copy' is not currently available" keeps popping up. Any suggestions?

Mine is like that too. Still trying to figure it out so I can "record" the action. Right now I'm doing the manual "duplicate layer" option. Not sure that'll work for a batch.
Strange, it didn't work for me :/ something about 'feathering' not currently available. Edit: Ah, it may be because when I go to make the watermarking action, it's set to Default Actions with no option to make it Batch Processing Actions.

I just read the first part of this and thought I have no idea what's wrong other than it will be something that can't be done in the macro. These can be very tricky to track down so I'm glad you spotted it.
why can i not copy & paste my watermark layer?
@RobinWhalley
3 жыл бұрын
The most likely causes are that you're not doing the copy and paste correctly or that there is a setting on your computer or in Photoshop that's interfering. Try the following to see if you get a better result. Open the image that you want to apply the watermark to and the image containing your watermark layer. Select the watermark layer and then choose “Layer | Duplicate Layer” in the main Photoshop menu. This will display a dialog where you can select the Destination as the other document that’s open. I don’t know if this will work but it could help to narrow down the cause of your problem.

@@RobinWhalley on my watermark layer, I only used text and no additional layered image. I did not need to "merge layers", BUT my watermark layer still shows the T (text icon) in the right side working layers area, not the grayish square like you show in minute 3:31. I'm wondering that is why I don't have a copy & paste option - because my layer isn't merged or flattened or anything? Thoughts on a step I should do to make my watermark "copy-able"? Thanks again, I've watched your tutorial so many times and done each step along with you and it's been great!

@@sqfothify It's very difficult to identify the problem without being able to watch your screen whilst you work. The most likely problem when the copy and paste options aren't available is that you don't have anything selected. The reason there is a greyish square around my watermark is that I have the Move tool selected in the Photoshop Tools Palette and have the layer containing the watermark selected in the Layers Window. Try clicking the Move Tool in the tools palette and then clciking the layer with your watermark in the Layers Window. When you do this, it should become highlighted. You should then be able to use the Edit Copy comand in the menu.

Nobody wants a watermark centered so this tutorial should have been Batch Processing only with a discussion of adjusting the watermark location
@RobinWhalley
Жыл бұрын
There are plenty of times that you need to add a watermark to the centre of an image, especially in volume. When you send a batch of images to a client to evaluate, you don't want someone in the creative department thinking they can use them by mistake (it's happened to me more than once). A watermark in the centre makes it clear that it's for evaluation and not use. If all that you want to do is add your name to the bottom or corner of an image, you are better off creating a watermark custom brush. Whilst this video uses Affinity Photo, you can do the same thing in Photoshop kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5lm2bFppbuql7g.html
