Hi, I’m Robin Whalley, a UK based Landscape Photographer and Author of over 20 books on Photography and photo editing.

This channel is all about how you can shoot great landscape photography and how to edit your photos for maximum effect. Every week I publish a new video. Sometimes I'm out in the field shooting landscapes. Other times I'm explaining how I edit my photos with tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, On1 and the Nik Collection.

I want to share with you how easy it can be to improve an image with the right tools and approach. If you’ve learned how to watch a video on You Tube, you can learn how to shoot breathtaking landscape photography.

    Super vid, Totally agree that just throwing the minimum nodes on first with the Pen tool and then adjusting is by far the quicker way than trying to match the outline when creating the nodes as virtually all the other tutorials show. One thing that I find makes it a bit easier to see when adjusting the nodes is to change the stroke width to be a bit heavier than the the thin blue lines and also change the stroke colour to something very bright and glary for the initial node adjustments and then when you have the correct shape put stroke width and colour back to default and tweek. Great vid, will checking your others.

    The fact that I am having to use a KZread video to find even the most basic of features shows how poorly thought out Affinity Photo is. I'm on the verge of uninstalling it after afew minutes. It doesn't even have point to point marquee drawing, you can't seem to adjust and fine tune the colour/levels/hues of individual layers - only the entire image ! It is a terrible product compared to PaintShop Pro.

    In most cases a photo is just a digital image that will, in mostly, finish up as a jpeg on a social media platform. Why do we need layers, masks, personas etc? I have been trying to get my head around editing raw images in Affinity, and have now gone back to a more simpler straight forward editor. I am sure that many available adjustments/settings are programmed into the software simply because it is possible to do so. If I was showing my photos in a gallery or getting paid to produce 30x20 prints, I could understand the time spent learning all the tricks, but for me, Affinity is just too overloaded. Gripe over😄

Get yourself a basic 12Mpixel iPhone and you have everything you need to produce great images for Social Media.

  • @RobinWhalley
    @RobinWhalley6 күн бұрын

    I think your masking feature may have become inverted. Try this. Open an image in Photoshop. Find the quick mask icon in the Tools Palette on the left of the screen. It's usually second from the bottom and shows a white rectangle with a dotted circle inside it. Double click the icon which opens a small dialog. This should be set to Masked Areas but may have been changed to Selected Areas. Change it to Selected Areas and then click OK. Restart Photoshop and then follow the instructions in the video again to see if it then works. This is just a guess but I've seen people have similar problems to yours in the past because this "hidden" setting was changed.

    If the filter is greyed out it usually means that you don't have a compatible layer selected in the Layers window. For example if youadd a Curves to the image and select that, you will find most of the filter menu is greyed out. Another example is if you have a layer mask selected in the Layers Window the Lens filter will be greyed out. Thanks again mate , you have a wonderful youtube voice ; and no annoying music 👋👋. I can do that Lr5 🥳, but it's great know of a way to do similar in Ap. I basically have the macro (unsharp mask) already in the Start macro . One thing I have not understood yet is why we need to put/use blank layer above the image when using the inpaint brush. Others online have said similar; but why?? I would be thinking fixing dust spots should be #1 job, then flatten image to start editing so why the blank layer? There seems to be times the inpaint brush leaves a "inprint" that can effect some FX edits like strokes/borders.

  • @RobinWhalley
    @RobinWhalley13 күн бұрын

    The new blank layer is to make the repair onto. The Inpoainting brush is a destructive edit because it changes the image pixels. By making the repair onto a separate layer, you can remove it later if you want to. It's common editing practice that's been around years.

But I do agree with the non-destruction thoughts which I believe is not a problem in my work flow from Lr5>Ap>Lr5 . I do my clean up first ; if I get it wrong just go back in the history, or just delete/reopen the file from windows . I always rasterize and flatten the image before adding more adjustment layers . Good/bad/right/wrong and why I don't know. But I do use the blank layer if later in the editing. I find the inpaint tool is not perfect for the likes of removing tree limbs from the tree trunk, so I use the clone tool to cut a break between the limb and the trunk then inpaint the rest of the limb . Even cutting breaks along the limb than inpaint the sections works better for me . It really depends what you mean by in-camera monochrome. If your camera is a black and white Leica or has been converted to only shoot mono, then you can't use the colour filter method. But if you are shooting with a regular camera set to mono, it's kind of doing what I recomend in the video. You will also be able to adjust the effect by applying different digital filters. Additionally, it only affects the JPEG image and the RAW file can still be edited as a colour image.
