How to Walk Properly-Stop Shuffling Now

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to Walk Properly and Stop Shuffling as You Get Older-Proper walking technique with Dr. Todd Martin. Shuffling generally involves shortened strides with poor clearance of the swing leg, sometimes almost dragging. It will inevitably be accompanied by a stooped posture, pitched forward at the waist to some degree. The typical heel to toe placement and roll of the foot followed by heel lift and toe off are typically absent, replaced by a more flat-footed placement and lift off. Shuffling commonly occurs as people get older, especially in the presence of neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease. However, many people who are neurologically intact also develop some degree of shuffling as they get older. This can increase the risk of falls, reduce confidence in walking, and also result in back pain due to the poor posture that is associated.
In this video, I will describe what a typical shuffling gait is and the problems associated with it. I will also describe the faulty core movement pattern that creates a shuffling gait. Finally, I will describe some simple exercises you can do to help prevent or improve a shuffling gait. Because a shuffling gait can be an early sign of neurologic disease, if you or a loved one has been developing this type of shuffling gait, it would be wise to get checked out by your doctor for an evaluation. It may be more than poor posture.

    Thank you. I have leg and ankle spasticity and dropped foot due to Multiple Sclerosis. This video helps me understand why I shuffle and scrape the ground when walking. I now know more of what I can do to walk better. I know it doesn't happen over night. I figure I have spent the last 23 years building compensating habits. I am trying to fix them a little at a time.

    I hope the video helps. It can be a challenge if you have an underlying nervous system issue, but exercise and practice can certainly move things more in the right direction.

    Good timing, shuffling has been in my mind to address next in trying to relearn how to walk. I have not been sure how to go about it. If someone could have taught to me to walk correctly in 2015 my life now would be so much better. So keep at it and if possible, teach the medical community as well.

    I know you have made a video about walking lightly before but that’s my issue. Sometimes I walk lightly and sometimes I hit the ground hard and you can hear it. The thing is it doesn’t always happen but it’s always on my right foot

    If it only happens sometimes, that means you have the ability to do it. Continued practice and consciousness will help.

    What is your take on Head over foot... I see other walking experts say. Thanks!

  • @ToddMartinMD

    @ToddMartinMD

    6 ай бұрын

    That makes sense if you are running. It makes no sense if you are walking, assuming they are saying you should land with your head directly over the foot. Just basic mechanics will tell you there is no way to do that without leaning forward.

    @@ToddMartinMD I have tried head over foot and it did not help my walking. I would lose my balance. Now I don't have to worry about that...thinking I was not doing correct.

    Do you give walking lessons (group or solo) in addition to teaching dance and Taiichi? Do you take Medicare p[patients outside of the Kaiser system? I have severe arthritis in my left hip caused by years of internal bleeding into my left hip that was finally treated with high doses of hydroxyurea. A hip replacement probably won't occur because of the bleeding disorder caused by a chronic blood cancer called essential thrombothycemia. My bone marrow makes way too many platelets, and they don't work. I read your biography and smiled. My mother was born and raised in the far South Side of Chicago in Roseland and Pullman, where President Obama was a community organizer. (My grandfather was the ward boss of the Ninth Ward.) My father graduated from Evanston Township High School, not far from Northwestern, your alma mater. Dad was a lifeguard on Lake Michigan. I would love to see videos of your walking instructions in Grant Park, along Lake Michigan, or in some of the wonderful Chicago neighborhoods. Keep up the great work. THank you for your help.

    Thanks. Chicago downtown is a great walking town, although when I was there in school I lived on roller blades. The lakefront is the best for that. As a Kaiser physician I can't practice anything to do with medicine outside the system or take patients. Teaching walking technique is a bit different, since it is not technically medical, even though it has medical implications. So, I do occasionally teach some individual walking lessons either virtually or in person for people who live in San Diego. I have considered group classes at some point but haven't gotten around to it.

  • @ToddMartinMD

    @ToddMartinMD

    Well, you are primarily going to be running with quick take off and stops in tennis. That is quite a bit different than walking technique. You can use this technique any time you are going to be walking.

    You are using Ba gua Zhang and not identifying as so. This is not a good thing. Of course this allows you to be more wholistic in your presentations but still has you avoid many important aspects. Half a loaf .......

    This is not Bagua. This is teaching people basic body mechanics that apply to all activities. One does not need to learn the complexities of Bagua to learn how to move better. I am using fundamental principles that apply to everything.

    People would not understand much without the talking. People already know what walking looks like. They just have no idea what’s actually happening.
