How to Walk and Run with Stenosis or Spondylolisthesis | Posture Correction

I had been diagnosed with moderate Stenosis at L4/L5, severe Stenosis at L5/S1, DDD at 3 levels, and multiple bulging discs. I was in the trenches of the medical system. I had learned about the importance of the pubic bone from a martial artist, and decided to go for a long walk. This strategy allowed me (and my diagnoses) to complete a 500 mile trek, helping me begin my ascent out of the back pain cycle, and I'd like to share it with you.
These are my best tips for walking with stenosis and spondylolisthesis, as well as running with these conditions. Walking is one of the best exercises for back pain, but it does matter how you walk. You can even get back to running with stenosis or spondylolisthesis, as long as you follow the right strategy. With this strategy I was even able to get back to running.
In the video you'll learn:
✅ What is stenosis, the anatomy explained
✅ How to walk with Stenosis and Spondylolisthesis
✅ Best posture for walking with stenosis and back pain
✅ Why physical therapy and gym exercises are not effective for lower back pain
✅ How to deal with muscular imbalances

Hi, just found your videos. I love them considering signing up for your program. I have seven herniated discs to in the neck and the rest in the lower back plus degenerative disc, moderate to severe as well as spinal stenosis, lower back my hips, however, do not rotate forword as you described. Instead, they rotate in. My butt moves forward not backward, wondering what your thoughts are on this since it doesn’t fit the profile you described. Thank you so much.

I have already lost a lot of the curve in my lordosis spine area. If I walk with my pelvis forward that is flattening out my back even more! Is that good? It seems to me I need to try to put the curved back in my low back!?

I am living in the United States, my name is Ling. I found this video accidentally and it saved me😂 Seven years ago, I injured my left hip bone due to rope skipping and developed sciatica. Even walking is difficult, and MRI also shows L4 , L5 spinal stenosis..., I am already disappointed with life. 😰 I was originally a piano teacher, but because my right foot has to step on the pedal, I don’t even dare to play the piano! I started walking the way you did this week, and it was much easier. You made me look a lot younger! In my mind you are qualified to be a Nobel Prize winner, thank you again👍👏🌈

This is pretty wild - I suffer from stenosis, and recently I have experimented with tightening my abdominal muscles while walking. It is less painful, and my walk is more balanced. If I don’t tighten my abdominal muscles, I tend to lurch over to the left. This video is a confirmation to my little experiment, and I am so glad to watch this. I would suggest either eliminating the background music, or turning it way down, I find it extremely irritating, which is too bad, because the doctor is a really nice guy and has a lot of valuable things to say.

I just knew somehow if I kept searching finally help would come, if only an explanation for why I’ve been in pain for over 20 years. I started walking over a month ago and could only do for about 5 min, so I would sit, then go again. I started doing my hips like that just because I could go further, but then here comes my knees, so I stopped thinking I’ll just be in pain until I die, but then I find you. Thank you. You’ve helped with this more than you will ever know by explaining and giving hope, that once I get my knees back on track to just continue and that I was on the right track just walking. Thank you, thank you.🙏❤️

After all the doctors, chiropractors and massage therapists I’ve gone to; no one has ever taught me this simple technique! I cannot thank you enough! It’s been life changing! Can you make a video on how to carry things like a laundry basket where you need to lean something into pelvis or do basic normal things like bending over to clean a toilet? That would be amazing!

When I had spondylolithesis over 10 years ago, I owe my healing to pool therapy!! I can’t stress enough how this helped over physical therapy! Sadly, pools are not available in most places! My cause was a damaged vertebrate. However, I owe my healing to the pool therapy! I have had little to no spinal pain. I do use a strong spinal wrap on occasion, as it’s important to protect the area. I keep you all who suffer in my thoughts! And pray that you find the help you need.

Ryan, I am so thankful for finding your program on a Facebook ad. One of my goals is to get back walking and this was very encouraging to me as I am in my 5th-6th week with the courses. I’ve had consistent back issues for 3.5 years and I look forward to my daily emails with the 5 minute video for each exercise and truly believe I am heading in the right direction. My issue sometimes is getting my breathing to properly go along with each exercise. I’m working on that too. Keep up the work you are doing. It’s helping me.

Thank you so much Dr. Ryan for sharing this information as it gives so much encouragement and support. I do a 1.5 to 2 miles walk 4/5 times a week. I will admit it is challenging as I find myself being pushed forward by the severe stenosis. I try to keep connected to my anchors and keeping the pubic bone forward will help to achieve that. I am definitely going to work on this and hopefully it will make walking more pleasant. I love the back anchor challenge and progression as it helps me so much. Keep up the great work.

I was in a car accident, in 2002, which caused my stenosis. Sitting was the worse thing I could do. I had chronic lower back pain, for 20 years. Then I walked 50 miles per month, for 3 months. My back pain went away, which was miraculous for me. The problem I have now tho, is addiction to gabapentin, which I shouldn't need so much now. But this isn't as bad as 20 years of back pain. I also would like to start doing yoga exercises again, that I quit doing. They are designed, to create flexibility in the spine.

The pelvis should pivot back and forth while walking, but the video walker does not move it at all. I see a lot of people walk this way - only moving the legs. Rocking the pelvis shifts the weight from one foot to the other while pushing the body forward. The pubic bone pushes forward when the leg swings forward and swings back when the weight transfers to that foot. This gentle swinging restores and maintains flexibility in the spine. Try walking both ways and feel the difference.

Thank you for sharing and the kind words, hope and belief are huge factors in getting out of this! I do have plenty more videos on the KZread channel, but the best place to learn how to develop the core connection and feeling for bringing the pubic bone forward is in the program. It's tough because it's definitely more of a feeling than something you can put into words, and so we go through a systematic process of modeling after infant/baby development. There is a free trial so you can actually experience it and see if it works for you. We start with the Back Anchor in the first week, and then the pubic bone anchor is in the second week.

I started the "pubic bone forward" a couple of days ago. It seems to be helping me. My SI is annoyed, but my worst symptom (leg stiffness in left quad) is the symptom that bothers me the most. My SI irritation and my quad stiffness came on about the same time six months ago. I am convinced they are related since imaging of my hip and knee have shown no abnormalities. Crossing my fingers this works because not being able to walk comfortably has really impacted my life in a negative way.

I'm 44 now. My problem started 2 years ago with mild sciatic pain and I immediately dropped 80 pounds of my weight, started to walk 10k steps everyday. The pain disappeared for a year as if I never had. I took a7 hours plane from NYC to Finland to see my parents, and lower back pain immediately started like crazy, MRI showed herniated disc at l4/l5 and bulging at l5/s1. I did everything I could of physical therapy, injections, pills and conservative life style and the pain was just getting crazier to a degree I couldn't stand or sit or even sleep for a minute. I unwillingly and unhopefully had laminactomy for the l4/l5 and I'm now 4 months after and I still have the same crazy pain and even worse with numb foot this time. Post op bed sleeping initiate a bulging in my neck as well at c2/c3/c4 and now I can't work or sit or even stand longer than 5 minutes. I feel my life has come to an end. I prey 5 times a day for God to take my soul so quick so that I can get relief.

Hi Mahmoud, thank you for sharing your situation with us; that is very helpful. I'm so sorry to hear about the intense pain and challenges you've been facing. It sounds like you've been through a lot, and I want to express my deepest empathy for your situation. I want you to know that you're not alone in this journey, and there is hope for improvement. We've had many students with a history of surgeries, sciatica pain, and herniated and bulging discs find relief and improved quality of life through our program. The Core Balance Training program has been specifically designed to address a wide range of issues, including those similar to your own. Dr. Ryan himself faced severe degenerative disc disease, several herniated discs in the lumbar spine, stenosis, joint instability, spondylolisthesis, and sciatica. This program was created to help individuals dealing with such conditions and the associated muscle imbalances that can cause nerve symptoms, including stenosis, sciatica, scoliosis, joint instabilities, thinning and narrowing of the spinal canal, herniated and bulging discs, and degenerative disc disease. I'd also like to share two recent videos where Dr. Ryan provides a visual representation of our program's impact that I think you'd find very helpful. In this video, he showcases his MRI and X-Ray results before starting the program and an updated MRI and X-Ray of his spine now. You can watch it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZp4zcqpl5O4d9o.html. Dr. Ryan also put together a comparison video where you can see his spine MRI from 2013 vs. 2023. You can watch it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k32TltJxhsKfhJs.html. These videos are great examples of what our program and approach can achieve. I recommend taking advantage of our free 7-day trial. It covers the first week of the course and it's where many of our students report feeling significant relief. We'd love to support you on your journey towards a pain-free life! 💙

Making sure your inner heel has not collapsed downward in footwear i found was important. Aswell as a hotwater bottle on the area when its bad. Correct thoughtful walking with the foot going down properly, look at your footwear outer heels , is it even wear , there vids on this. [ if it uneven wear then you will stand uneven effecting the joints ] Correct eating can also help and losing weight. Stenosis and other back / spine pain can seem to dominate but its possible to fight back using all of the techniques mentioned by the Dr and in my comments and everyone elses . Ps : its possible to get foods that are high in collagen.. that build joint tissue . Also there are foods that can attack or irritate or even prevent the formation. As some minerals / electrolytes need vitamins to work with. Again theres videos on collagen production and types of beneficial protein to produce collagen. Cut out alcohol and sugars completely as well as reduce carbohydrates [ NB : GRADUALLY ! ]. 😮 Unfortunately its going to be mind over matter in a battle of will.

There's a good chance that you can return to high-intensity activities like boxing, muay thai, and wrestling without needing surgery if you stick with the program and learn how to move in a healthier, core-centered way. Dr. Ryan's motto is that it's not what you do; it's how you do it. Once you reconnect with your core, anything is possible, and the body has amazing healing capabilities. We have students who have graduated and returned to golfing, another sport that requires bending and twisting, equestrians, and even an extreme skier known for his incredible stunts. 😊

Thanks for the helpful video. How long does it typically take for a grade 1 or 2 spondy condition to improve (with proper stretching) before recommending light running? In the interim do you recommend walking everyday to loosen up the lower back?

  • @CoreBalance

    @CoreBalance

    5 ай бұрын

Hi Mark, thanks for your comment! There is no typical timeframe for a grade 1 or 2 spondy condition to improve, as each individual is different. Dr. Ryan advocates listening to your body, allowing it to guide you, and reintroducing running when it feels right for you. Walking is recommended and highly encouraged! Dr. Ryan's philosophy is that if you have legs and they work, you should be walking as much as possible. It is a symmetrical, low-impact, whole-body cardiovascular exercise that is very therapeutic for the spine and can help ease tension in the lower back.

Hi Ken, thank you so much for sharing your situation with us; that is so helpful in understanding what is going on. The Core Balance Training program is designed to directly address the patterns that cause these specific conditions you're dealing with, including stenosis and sciatica. The program can also help promote muscular balance to reduce uncomfortable muscle spasms. By bringing the body into alignment, as our program teaches, you create more space in the spinal canal, alleviating the pain associated with sciatica. Additionally, by bringing your muscles into balance, we can help open up the space that has been narrowing and compressing, often associated with stenosis. Strengthening the muscles that support the natural curvature of the spine can help restore and maintain a healthier alignment in many cases. The core muscles, including the abdominal muscles, play a vital role in supporting the spine. Strengthening the core muscles can provide stability to the lower back, contributing to better posture and alleviating lower back pain for many individuals. Here are some great videos that Dr. Ryan put together for more information on theses topics that I think you might find helpful: What Causes Sciatica | How to Treat Sciatica (PART I): kzread.info/dash/bejne/q35mqteehrDWlMo.html Sciatica Relief Treatments VS. Long-Term Solutions (PART II): kzread.info/dash/bejne/qquKsq56nKS9kto.html Sciatica Nerve Pain Causes and Treatment | Anatomy L4-L5-S1 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4iWj5KRhqfViKw.html I recommend taking advantage of our free 7-day trial, as it covers the first week of the course, and many of our students report feeling significant relief during this period. It's also an opportunity to experience the program and see if it aligns with your needs and goals. 😊
