I have never seen such a brilliant teacher in English;she is really connoisseur of subject of english language.
Sometimes I am a bit fearful when I use semi-colons; I am afraid a better grammarian will humiliate me. Yes, I use them to show off. Then I recognize that the odds of someone ( at my work ) knowing that i misused a semi-colon is pretty close to zero.

In English “period” has a different meaning; we call the dot at the end of a sentence a “full stop”. A semi-colon can often be a substitute for the word”so”.

Unfortunately, these days I notice that people overuse hyphens and use them in place of where semicolons would have been used.

Wow . The best lesson EVER! Thank you 🙏🏻 I loved the last bit most of all...
Shouldn’t that be “most importantly”?
"Using a semicolon will show you as a more intelligent etc etc person"!! In Australia we learn punctuation in Grade school. As for your examples, 'I'm feeling unwell; I can't go to the meeting." - that's plainly wrong. "I'm feeling unwell SO I can't go to the meeting." Yes, your two parts are sentences - but primitive ones such as an infant might use, they are far too simplistic for adult writing. A semicolon does NOT link what are clearly separate sentences. "He wants to study overseas, therefore he needs to take the (whatever that bit is)": Your comma is a misuse of the comma in modern writing and you are using the semicolon where a comma is adequate (not only adequate but correct).
