    Although I have special interest in learning and improving my language, I never tried to use semi colon. After going through this lesson, I can very confidently use semi colon in my writing. The funniest past I am understanding this at the age of 59.

    Sometimes I am a bit fearful when I use semi-colons; I am afraid a better grammarian will humiliate me. Yes, I use them to show off. Then I recognize that the odds of someone ( at my work ) knowing that i misused a semi-colon is pretty close to zero.

    In English “period” has a different meaning; we call the dot at the end of a sentence a “full stop”. A semi-colon can often be a substitute for the word”so”.

    Exactly, as I have elaborated. The 18-minute dissertation on the use of the semi-colon is totally incorrect. Confirmed by the Oxford English dictionary. (I guess no--one can be correct 100% of the time)

    "Using a semicolon will show you as a more intelligent etc etc person"!! In Australia we learn punctuation in Grade school. As for your examples, 'I'm feeling unwell; I can't go to the meeting." - that's plainly wrong. "I'm feeling unwell SO I can't go to the meeting." Yes, your two parts are sentences - but primitive ones such as an infant might use, they are far too simplistic for adult writing. A semicolon does NOT link what are clearly separate sentences. "He wants to study overseas, therefore he needs to take the (whatever that bit is)": Your comma is a misuse of the comma in modern writing and you are using the semicolon where a comma is adequate (not only adequate but correct).

    Thank you! When I was studying my ugrad in biology, my histology prof admonished us to have a solid grasp of english composition, we would fail the course otherwise; it didn't matter if she could see that we knew the content well. The exams were to be all essay format. I marched off to the registrar and enrolled in two english composition courses. Thanks Yeti..!
