Helloo thank you so much for this tutorial! I just wanted to ask if there's a way to use a brush tool on a filled live bucket group? I'm trying to add some custom brush textures on the filled sections but I don't know how to paint on it in a way where the brush will only be painted on a selected group and not paint outside the lines. I can't seem to get it right.

You would probably need to expand the group, then add the brush, and then mask it so it's only inside the shape (brushes behave like strokes, so 1/2 is inside the line, and 1/2 is outside).

​@@GDHT Thnx. But I have a question, which I hope you'll answer soon. I created a drawing, and tried to colour, and it said me to merge. I selected everything, clicked on object, then went to live paint, then clicked merge. Then I added some other objects, and I tried to colour the whole thing. And for that I have to undo the merge, then merge everything together, which I don't know how to. So plz can you tell me that how can I un-merge it?

I don't think you can unmerge after merging. One thing I constantly do is keep an unmerged version off the side of the artboard. That way I can merge my artboard version but I always have an unmerged version if I need it.

@@GDHT I opened up an old .ai file and noticed that I had some layers that were "live paint". With the type of design I created, there was no possible reason why I used live paint, just inexperience. I just expanded all of those layers. Thanks again for the help :).

hello ! thank you for the video, question at the end you mentioned that we have to expand the compound to detach all the shapes. For some reason after pressing command E nothing is happening it stays as a group/compound. Any other way to separate the shapes? thank you!

You're welcome! Really, CMD E expands the live paint group. It doesn't separate the shape. You can select the group, and Ungroup, or Release the compound path to separate.

Same thing with me, nothing happened with command E. I believe they removed this shortcut in the latest versions of Ai. You can do the same by going to the menu item using Object / Live Paint / Expand.

So im using the grid tool right and the live paint tool to fill in squares, once they are coloured in, there's a shortcut to be able to change each section of colour at once without having to click each individual sqaure or use the selection tool, do you know how, i used it a while back but cant remember how i got it?

I have to press the Shift key and then without releasing the Shift key with the other hand, release the mouse and press the arrows to paint the stroke with another color, I do not know if it is because I am using the Windows platform. But excellent tutorial anyway.

Hello. I have made a sketch using the brush tool and illustrator will not allow me to use the live bucket tool to fill it with color. Is there something I am missing? Should I have done the sketch with the pencil tool only?

When I try to do that, I get a message "Complex visual appearance attributes such as brushes, live effects, transparency and stroke alignment options may be lost when converting to a live paint group." One option is to copy the shape and paste behind, then fill that shape with the color.

Hi I am working in 2022 and the short cuts doesn't seem to work and when i tray to duplicate the circulates they disappears. I can get this to work

Are you on Mac or PC? PC has difference shortcuts - use CTRL instead of CMD and ALT instead of OPT. I couldn't understand the rest of your message - sorry.

Do you have anything selected? If I don't have a selection, my live paint bucket has a 'prohibited sign.'

Why is it that whenever I try to fill color in a particular area, it colors the whole thing?

It sounds like your shapes aren't closed. If you want me to take a look, you can send the file to howtographicdesigner at gmail

The issue I'm having with Ai is when I use live paint bucket. It always changes my brush lines from curvy to staight. So instead of it looking brushed it turns out looking like I used a line tool with lots of tiny gaps.

It's 'Expand' - I'm thinking it's under the Edit menu, maybe?

When I use this tool, sometimes there is a pop-up says 'If you wish to merge the paths to the Live Paint group,click the Merge Live Paint button', I don't know why this happens, seems unpredictable to me

I haven't come across that yet!

I made objects, live painted them. Then I went to make pattern. In this tool everything was knocked out. No fills, no strokes, no colours. How can I reinstate the situation before I pressed, "pattern make"?

It sounds like you need to 'Expand' first (Object > Expand).

Still trying to understand the live paint tool. Have been using illustrator casually for 7 years but never understood it. It looks easy, but in reality I often get stuck, not sure why, it refuses to accept the objects I want to paint. It is the most mysterious tool. Still actually no idea how it works. The search for help continues..
