You are the only coach who talks about results. All other coaches talk about how to hit the ball. Well, results are what are measured in tennis and in life. How we achieve them is another matter.

Angle shots (including volleys) are much easier to teach if you start your players standing cross court just a few feet from the net, in the doubles lane across from each other. Emphasize body position behind the ball going extremely cross court, keeping the ball between player and net. Then gradually work both players back to center, then to the other side of the court with opposite extreme angles. Same goes for angles with ground strokes. It takes a lot of repetition to find and groove the right relationship of body and racket to the incoming ball. Start with extreme angles to disrupt and change the straight ahead mindset.

Very helpful for systematising my 11-yr old son's understanding of the game. Thanks, Jorge.

This really helped clarify what's meant by an "angle". I think I have been under the impression that hitting an angle involves hitting the ball in Level 3 (exiting through the service box), but this drove home that that shot depends on your own positioning. Defining angles based on where they exit the court is a big help. Thanks.

Thanks for this tip Jorge. The exit point cue really helped my son better understand the angles he needs to work with to terminate rallies.

terrific. informative. like the concept of changing angle degrees as one approaches the net. seems obvious, yet I constantly don't angle volleys or other "put aways. work to do .. thanks for the direction.

gordon gannett just get a steady partner and stand in the right corner of baseline duece side. Then hit cross court forehands at each other back and forth back and forth. Stay an hour doing that maybe a break or two. You then can get the feel and find the deep corner the service box corner and go for a winner occasionally on the sharp angle mid service box sideline. Do this an hour per day for two weeks. Watch how your range and angle target skills will miraculously improve. It seems like work but it will become fun and when you go to play sets/ matches you'll be weaponized.

A strange thing. When I watch this video on my appleTV, the zones are named 0, 1, 3, and 4. Everything else seems identical when I play this vid on my computer and the one on AppleTV at the same time. [I noticed the numbering was off, so I check for comments on the computer.] For some reason the AppleTV picks up what I assume is the old version with the wrong numbering in the soundtrack.

Imagine a ball like a person walking towards you, hit his left ear, not the nose. I think that's what he meant.

Do you have any advice for players who are great when they are practicing but choke during real matches?

If I may cut in. I had big problem with underperforming during matches, couldn't make easy shots that I'd kill during practice. I investigated the problem and realised that it's the pressure of the score and outcome that is jamming me. What I did is, tried not to overhit, not to rush and finish the rally, but most important, tried to enjoy the play as if it's practice. Try it, it takes time, but it implements in the mindset. Tell yourself "if he/she (opponent) wants this point, he/she has to earn it from me. If you are down break points, imagine it's already next game as if you are broken, so no pressure. Think of point simply as a point, not as break point, 30 all, set point, etc... Know that there is a pressure on the other side of the net too. Use it as a weapon. Real deal is to really believe in these thoughts, and I guarantee you, you will see your opponent giving you free points once they see you mentaly stable. This is the way it worked for me. I had a huge issue :)

Just do your thing as in practice game. Plan your shot, execute, plan your shot, execute, nothing else. just like in practice. there's no score, no outcome, just plan that next shot, stick with the plan, execute and don't get tense and don't "hit the breaks" as in don't try to be somehow more careful because that will just ruin your technique, your swing, your racquet head angle, everything. The next shot and a clean, routine execution of it should be all that exists in your mind when the ball is at play during a match.

The best way to deal with choking is to think of something else. The wrong answer is "don't choke" or "stay calm" because then you are thinking of choking, which will make you choke. Whenever I find myself thinking about the score, or "I shouldn't mess this up", or "I'm anxious", I acknowledge the stress first, then I think of a pink elephant. Next I remind myself of fundamentals like relaxing the body, watching the ball and moving on the front of my feet. The idea is to think of something else, rather than trying to NOT think about choking. The choice of a pink elephant adds a silly touch, which usually reduces the weight of the moment. It allows me to think of fundamentals. If I go straight from the stress to the fundamentals, I omit relaxing. If I think "relax", I just may choke again.
