What is a PID controller and how does it work?
This video is going to be about one of the very common applications of Solid-State Relays along with a Temperature PID Controller for locally controlling and monitoring the temperature in the industry.
In the previous videos, we extensively explained the solid-state and electromechanical relays.
👉 Learn more about the "Solid State Relays" here ▶ upmation.com/solid-state-relay/
👉 Learn more about the "Electromechanical Relays" video here ▶ upmation.com/relay/
In this video, you'll learn more about Solid State Relay applications; And of course, you'll get introduced to the Temperature PID Controllers.
We'll talk about the PID temperature controller working principle; We'll see how a temperature ON/OFF Controller works in conjunction with a Solid State Relay.
We'll also check out the datasheet of the temperature controller to see how to set a PID
In the end, we'll check the input and outputs on the same graph to get the gist of this example and see how PID Controller works with an SSR.

Glad you loved it! Actually, this part of the discussion does not seem interesting to most of the audience. But in our opinion, this is very important to get familiar with the reality of the actual work! Of course, we did not go so deep and tried to just talk about the gist of the datasheet. Anyways, thank you for mentioning this point and you're very welcome!

Hi! I currently have the same model series of PID (TCN4S-24R) and I’m having a hard time setting my own cycle control time. When I go to cycle, it doesn’t allow to select a duty cycle time or anything like that, only for standard can I go up to 120 seconds. Am I missing a subtle setting? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you!

@Upmation Hello, i want ask. I have extruder for PVC hose extrusion and it has 8 temperature controllers ASCON K49. These controllers are switching zero crossing SSR. I dont understand one thing. When i turn up machine for heat up, these controllers interuptly switching on and off while heating up. Setpoint is 200 celsium but it behaves like this while actual temperature is for example 100C, just in "heating up mode". Delay between switching is approximately 0.5 sec. Is it some protection against burn of heating band? Can these bands burn off if would be switched on until it hit setponit? Thank you for possible answer :)

@@Upmation OK, question then: So I have one board that has triac on output, and on input it has 2 pins: 1) zero crossing output, 2) PWM input. When used with ESP32, using PWM duty cycle from 0-100 the triac on the output "modifies" the sine wave - like in one of your examples (phase control mode) - it switches on with the delay so it is quite fast reaction. But this board is very low output - probably no more than 1A continuously. Then I have SSR-25DA - this one however only does "on/off" (standard mode) - is there any way to control DA type SSR the same way the 1st board is controlled? Or only the VA type can be controlled this way? Or another way: does it make any difference for the heater controller I am building if I use phase or standard mode, as it seems that if the standard one will last ON only until the cycle goes through zero, that means that ON/OFF can happen (if synchronized I think) even 50 times per second. Right? Bigger problem however is the inertia of heater - I am still playing with Kp, Ki and Kd to find a good spot where all these 3 variables will make things working as I want: fast heating, no overshooting, steady state when setpoint reached and then if the setpoint changed - reacts the same way as at the beginning (I am working on SMD hot plate btw.). Thx

Could you do a video on controlling a heating element in water using a PID -- and efficiency of SSR vs SCR? I have an 8KW Atmor tankless water heater that has two switched heating elements. I want to add stable electronic temperature control. But I can't find good information about the different options! Seems the PID + SSR MAY have longer switching time, and that MAY reduce heating element life from thermal cycling vs a higher speed SCR. But I am having trouble finding the real answer.

@@Upmation to follow up, it seems zero-crossing SSR is the way to go, because of the thermal mass of the heating element plus the switching time of the SSR are more than fast enough to preserve the life of the heating element. The SCR seems to be useful for motor control and dimming. Unless operated at the zero crossing (like most SSRs), SCRs can have a detrimental effect on the power system: lower power factor and harmonics that may cause radio frequency interference (RFI) or even affect the operation of other equipment.

Yes, it is! Unless you did not exceed the range of the output voltage, you can connect any AC voltage to the output terminals of the SSR.

The suitability of a given option depends on its application, rather than being simply better or worse.

If the temperature is rising gradually then everything is OK! If it is rising quickly within a short period of time it might be related to your temperature indicator/controller or your temperature sensor. Make sure that they are both functioning correctly by measuring the temperature with a Pyrometer at the same time.

Do all PIDs need an SSR?

No. You don't necessarily need to use an SSR with a PID controller. It depends on your application. Please check the manual of your device.
