Based on my testing, Stage Manager doesn’t need turned on to use the external monitor. The external monitor will show as though Stage Manager is turned on, but the iPad will remain with it off. Additionally, if you don’t like the bottom dock and left side icons with Stage Manager on, they can be turned off by long pressing/right clicking the Stage Manager icon in Control Center.

Not including A12X/Z iPad pros is just beyond comprehension, as if those were not “Apple silicon” like M1. But then I also think squeezing a fixed dock and a fixed window stacks on the left, so that it can do overlapping windows on the 11 inch pro is pretty useless due to its size, particularly if on a Magic Keyboard where it’s more distanced on the desk than holding it in one’s hand, in which a triple app Split View should be the better solution cause it takes up every inch of the screen.

well; after several tests I can confirm that you absolutely need a keyboard and mouse to activate the connection to the external display. Currently not all external monitors are recognized by the OSIipad 16 therefore the resolution of the external screen (zoom) cannot be changed. The consequence is that the desk image will be enlarged and you will not see the dock and the windows will be partially visible. This happens with external monitors that have a resolution lower than 4k apart from sporadic cases. If you connect iPad to a compatible monitor (or a 4k te) and then disconnect and reconnect immediately to an incompatible full HD monitor this could work, for me it did.

Great video. I finally know what stage manager is now. lol However, I really don’t understand the use case here. Why drag a photo from your iPad when that photo is presumably readily available in your desktop/laptop Mac? The ecosystem for apple seems to be its own worst enemy in an application like this, imo. That said, it’s beautiful and appears to work fluid and flawlessly. Maybe it’s just a matter of creating additional workspace? Cheers.

I’d like to know what the max monitor size this will support. I use a Samsung ultrawide for work which I can see the iPad being able to use the full screen space of it. Also does the apps automatically layer them selfs in stage manger? I’d imagine when it’s connected to a monitor you have more space to have the apps side by side.

No windowing on my 2020 iPadPro? When I had the Dev Mini, it ran MacOS like a scalded cat compared to my i7 4Ghz iMac. This is just because marketing is making all the decisions now. We've had multiple windows running for decades with less than 1Gb of memory. Stage Manager can't run 4 windows on an A12? Nonsense. How many apps can be ready to run on a freaking iPhone? I've hung on to this iPad for two years, but I've never been able to get attached to it. I've kept it around only for testing and Lidar. They should have fixed multitasking long ago. They *know* it sucks.

I have stage manager turned on, go to display and brightness, I see my external monitor listed, but arrangement isn’t there. How does one force this on an M2 iPad Pro? I have a thunderbolt 4 dock connected, HDMI to my Monitor (LG 4K HDR) and… I paid $2000 to not have the one feature I have been begging for, for 7 releases of the OS. Apple has no idea how to fix it, though they have said they are aware of the bug. 16.1, 16.1.1, and 16.2 aren’t going to fix it. Just curious if anyone has an idea. I’ve tried three other docks, all of them do the job with other iPads, usual rotation of cables, and other monitors (which was what Apple first claimed was the problem, then relented when it worked with other devices). I’m sure I’m just holding it wrong…
