6 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm a native Spanish speaker, and you have a little mistake with the sentence: "Se comierron los tamales", you saying that "comieron" goes in plural because "tamales" is in plural but that's not correct. The sentence: "Se comió los tamales" is correct too. This is because these sentences, have what we called "Sujeto Tácito", that basically means that you can infer who the subject is just by reading the sentence. For intance, the first one: "Se comieron los tamales", refers to "Ellos/Ellas se comieron los tamales", if you see the sentence like that, "comieron" is in plural because it is referencing "ellos". The same happens with "Se comió los tamales", in this case, it is referencing to "El/Ella se comío los tamales". and El / Ella, is singlular, so "comió" is singular. When using passive voice, is completely different, because the verb is related to the object, in this case, "tamales", for example, in passive voice, the right sentence will be: "Los tamales fueron comidos" Cheers!!!!
@emmamorgan5765
3 жыл бұрын
I think his example se comieron los tamales is because it is being said in the passive way which translates to English as the tamales were eaten... in this example we don’t know by who. In saying this in a passive way, the tamales are the subject. Your examples are specific to when referring to a ‘person doing the eating’ therefore are not examples of passive ‘se’. That’s my understanding of learning as a native English. Therefore everyone’s sentences are correct but lead to different translations for us in English.

I discovered that it is hard to learn "Se" quickly when describing it in english, because there is no such thing in english or the use of "Se" in english very different. however, thanks god I speak Arabic because it is very similar. It is like adding just one letter to the sentence but in English you have to add new words and sometimes new sentence just to reach the same meaning.

At 3:14 the example with the tamales is a passive construction and not an impersonal expression (which you used in the other examples) and not reflexive either (as implied in the photo). This problem arises because you chose a sentence that is unlikely to occur in normal speech. When would you use a sentence like that? After a pot luck dinner you walk around the table and comment about what was eaten or not eaten? No, you would likely say "Boy, the tamales were popular tonight!" Using fictitious or improbable sentence constructions is confusing to learners.
@ballsxan6 жыл бұрын

You're in depth explanation was perfect. This was a great video and well put together. I'm now a subscriber
This is the 'se' video I've always wanted. Thanks.
1:19 That mirror looks how I feel on the inside.
Thanks for the explanation of sentences like "se me rompieron los platos" This came up a few years ago in a Spanish class and no-one could explain or understand the construction.

I'm native chavacano here in the Philippines most of our daily use words are from Spanish,but sometimes different in grammar
this is an excellent video clearly explaining a challenging topic. Thanks for putting together!

This is a great explanation with excellent examples! To the speaker: se dice "PRO-noun" (with a short space between the prefix and 'noun'), not "proNOUN" (wrong accent, no space).

Este video es muy bueno👏👏👏👏
i think se is to add to a third person conjugation to make that 3rd person conjugation in action.

Interesting ! As a native English speaker this would translate to dishes in this particular structure. We rarely say ‘wash the plates’... dishes refers to the whole process of washing up so I’d say he is correct .
