📊 How to use Power BI DAX - Tutorial
Ғылым және технология
In this step-by-step tutorial for beginners, learn how to use DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) in Microsoft Power BI. DAX is a formula language with functions. If you've ever written formulas in Excel, you'll find that DAX is very familiar.
We'll start by loading the sample data into a data model. Next, we establish relationships between the various tables.
Once the setup is complete, we'll write our first measure. A measure is a calculation that runs across our data model. You'll learn about a few different functions, including sum and count. You'll also learn how to comment your expressions.
Next, we create a measure using operators, like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. We then dive into how you can create measures using a graphical user interface called Quick Measures.
We then move onto creating a calculated column and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of columns vs. measures.
We then dig into iterator functions and when you would use them compared to an aggregator function. Iterator functions include sumx, countx, averagex, maxx, minx, and rankx.
Next, we look at the date functions that are available and we use the one called weekday.
We wrap up by looking at some logical functions, including find, if, and calculate.

I’ve watched several tutorials on Dax but yours stands out more and straight to the point. Thanks Kelvin
Today I went to a work interview (Thursday). They asked me if I was good on Power BI, and I never heard about it before. They said they could get around it, but I said I would be able to master it by Monday. Your videos popped up on my search and as I followed them, I feel like I'm ready in just one day. Really nice, powerful and simple at the same time program. Thanks to your tutorials, the introduction to this program was easy for me. Keep up with these videos. You will be the first search going on from here for software tutorials for me.
Kevin, you are such a great teacher. 🤩Thank you for keeping it very simple and clear. I love the way you explain everything and I am excited to watch more of your training videos for DAX. I have found Dax hard to learn but you make it fun and exciting. 😀

What a great teacher. You just made DAX look less of a mystery to me. never thought I will take on DAX and be this happy. Thank you Kevin. God bless you Sir
Thanks very much for this! It's been a while since I last used Power BI DAX functions and needed a refresher. Your video turned out to be so much better than what I had initially expected! I hope you can do more tutorials on complicated DAX, they used to give me so much headaches!
I am absolute beginner in Power BI Dax formulas. But now by watching this video I understood how to use them and about their core functionalities. Thanks Kevin great effort.

How do you use power bi for audits? I’m curious because I was actually wondering if there was applications for using power BI in the finance industry.
This is fantastic, I had basic idea about power BI and DAX... but this video helped me to get into detail on calculation part... It was easy to understand and learn. Thanks a lot 🙂
Kevin, you are such a great teacher! I've spent 3 months learning from some other guys on KZread and doesn't understand anything. But your 37-min video just changed anything, I could understand a bit more on how star scheme, DAX, new colume, measure,... works. That's just great!
It's Amazingggggggggg! The way you've explained just makes me wanna learn more. We need more videos on DAX please!

Kevin, this instruction is awesome. I'm pretty new to Power Bi but I've been performing data analysis for a long time. Your instruction touched on many topics that quickly made sense to me (leveraging my previous experience with Excel) and the examples (following along with your example files) cleared up any questions I had. I only wish I had Power Bi 30 years ago (yes, I'm old). Thank you.

Nice video. Very descriptive with good examples. I would have loved it if, when you were doing % and margins, you showed how big a % of total profits each customer was. So the customer profit % of total profit, and in the same table. That would have been a great real world addition 😊
Kevin, you are a great teacher. You explain very details and clear. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Each time I saw your tutorials...I end up watching your video by saying you a big thank you from the bottom of my heart...it is really helpful Kevin...you are truly great teacher...thanks once again.
Thank you Kevin 👍🏻 I’m a final year student student studding Business IT. Data analyst and science are my career path I’m considering cause I’m efficient in excel, sql and a beginner in python language. Your power BI tutorial is a top notched for me. I got a job interview recently for a data analyst role. After having gone through your tutorials over the past few months, I stood out during the interview and the panelists were impressed. The only challenge I had was that I’m yet to complete my course but I believe after I’m done I will get one in that area. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you so much Kevin! I have been struggling a bit with some of these concepts in DAX and this has made everything so much clearer for me. I can't wait to go back and rewrite some of my old measures and create new more powerful ones, especially with the Calculate Function.

Hi Kevin, another great video as usual;) - however, like someone already pointed out on the comments below (Jonathan Porter), there's a mistake on the bar chart - Orders should add up to 700 but they are not. This is because the Values field should be summarised by Count. Cheers
You are a true teacher Kevin, Thanks for clear explanations

@kevin, When you use the table Cookie Types for calculating a profit to which your named as Total Profit 2, applying the measures, it shows profit as 2717064.38. But, the moment you tick mark the column "Name" along with Total profit 2, it shows the same figures for all the names which was not the case in the earlier profit you had calculated.

What a great tutorial. Very clear explanations. 10 out of 10.
For the bar chart of the weekdays at around 29:55, the values add up to over 700 (greater than the number of rows in the data). To correct this issue, in my version of Power BI, for the bar chart, I had to select "Count of Day of Week" in "Values" and then place "Day of Week" in "Axis". Thanks so much for your work Kevin! I appreciate your clear overview.

Hi Kevin, thanks for this awesome video! It helps me quickly start with Power BI! However, I found the analysis of the order number by the day of the week was wrong. The Y-axis you did in the video was SUM (the default function was SUM), so the value equals the day number times the order number. It should be changed to Count.
All I can say is thank you for this! I understand everything now
This is well explanatory and easy to follow. Good job!
Thanks Kevin, that was very insightful. Please lobby with Microsoft to make all these measures available in Quick Measures
