But how is this done, reliably, with Windows? Asio4all is a solution, but not the greatest. Thanks, Mattias!

Indeed the core of Windows platform isnt very reliable for Pro audio routing. I abandoned Windows for these unreliable driver issues. ASIO4all is a unreliable work around while Aggregate device function is built into Mac OSX. OSX or Linux is the way IMO (when talking about synced internal audio routing) 😀

  • @DopamineOverload

@@MattiasHolmgren Asio4all isn't terrible, but not great, either. I would disagree that OSX or Linux is the way. Especially with the myriad of problems new versions of OSX present, on hardware or software (to the point that many companies warn people NOT to upgrade or update). I'm on Windows 7. Longtime Reaper user. Pros have released great music just using Maschine, Ableton Live Lite, and dated versions of Cubase or Digital Performer. As long as a computer is properly configured and has powerful enough specs, it's the artistry and mixing that wins out. Not the computer.

Indeed you don't need the latest gear / computer / OS to make good music. I didnt mention making music, I was only speaking of audio routing. Use whatever works for you. But for me, personally, OSX worked out to be the best option. I still have Win Maschines around. Since gaming is very much behind on OSX. I did try to record a video episode wirh OBS on Windows and do the same kind of internal routing from DAW -> OBS as I have in OSX but it didnt work out well for me. Glad it works out for your personal usage. Im happy as long as everyone finds out what works for them. It's not about the gear, it's about the creative mind. Cheers Chris.

@chriscauldermusic the actual OBS software has gotten more love on the Windows platform though as it has the specific OBS with stream Labs integrated. But I just saw there is a Mac version now... Haven't tried it yet so I am running native OBS on MAC. OSX has its problems too with recent new releases, so its best to wait at least 1 year before migrating to the latest OS each time they release a new major release, if one want all 3rd party plugins to work. Every OS has its flaws, but OSX works best for my work as a producer, composer, app dev and graphics designer. Thanks.

Thanks to this I can record my Tr8 and elektron directly via USB and still have the two Inputs free. I can even edit the tracks afterwards as opposed to recoding everything directly from the mixer. The amount of time I've dumped into trying to find an audio interface that allows me to simultaneously use one stereo input and one mic input, when I already have one interface with 2i2, and don't want to dump +$300 into another mixer that has at least 3 inputs. *This, your video, is the solution!* I found a cheap Scarlett Solo online, so now I can just add that and aggregate the inputs. Can't tell you what a relief it is to come across this solution. Whew! came across this because im just now getting into outboard gear and have a few interfaces (as im sure we all do from our 'oh I shoulda bought this one instead' ha ha). it worked like a charm. I swear macOS has amazing hidden gems most people dont know. I been doing audio for 20 years and never knew about this. Thanks so much! Also looking into getting into analog summing. Eyeballing a Neve 5057 and a ferrofish, running through some outboard mastering gear. its a pretty expensive move but I demoed this setup and it just sounds amazing. the final print was definitely noticeable. the other option is to skip the analogue summing and go with stereo mastering to the outboard. for that was looking at the RME FSR. I heard the converters on that thing are outrageous. definitely the cheaper route. thanks again and have fun out there

Hello Mattias, Thank you very much for this super eye opening video.Couldn't find any better explanation than this. I was looking for a way to use the Antelope audio usb mic together with my audio interface and now I know it's possible. Hope I don't have too much latency but yeah. It's then I think possible to hook up another set of near fields if you have more outputs because of two audio interfaces. Wonderfull and you don't need another utility to be able to record your voice and capture video. I thought this was needed but I see it's not needed. Thanks a lot. You're amazing.

@@MattiasHolmgren Hi Matthias, I have a strange problem and I hope you can help. I'm running Bitwig 3.3.11 (plan expired last year) on High Sierra. My main audio interface is a UAD Apollo Twin Duo. I recently purchased a TR-6S and an MC-101, great little boxes. I have created an aggregate device with all three. Unfortunately what is happening is that (with the TR-6S as the master) Bitwig receives the audio from the grooveboxes inputs and there is an output signal on Bitwig's master out but no audio is being sent to the Apollo even when I add output busses with the meter showing a signal still nothing from the Apollo. If I select the Apollo as the sole output device then there is no input signal at all! This method (the split input/output devices) does work in Ableton but I don't want to work in Ableton anymore! I've heard that High Sierra does play up with aggregate devices and I would've updated my OSX but my mixer is Firewire but from Mojave up Firewire is not supported. Have you come across this before? Am I just going to have to bite the bullet and update OSX and get a new mixer? Be great if you can help or point me in the right direction, tschuss!

Hi Rumi, I do not experience any additional latency when using aggregate device setups. Adat connections sometimes have a problem with 44.1 vs 48khz. You need to set the correct master clock device etc. But it's no big deal, but with aggregate device you just "merge" the interfaces you have at hand. But as I mentioned, not all interfaces go well together for some reason. THanks! *Sorry for the delay* 🙏☕😄

Thanks! I have 2 questions - 1) does this use more CPU power to do the drift correction? 2) Does it add latency? I'd like to record 16+ channels for a live album, and I'd like latency to be low enough to run the output to the monitors and I'd like to add very simple EQ & compression to each track, and maybe verb. Do you think this would be stable enough?

  • @MattiasHolmgren

    @MattiasHolmgren

    Жыл бұрын

No there is no more latency happening. But beware that not all audio interfaces play well together. You need to give it a test to see how it works out with your specific hardware. Simple EQ and compression, or a regular algo reverb will not introduce too much latency. Limiters, convolution reverbs and phase neutral eq with oversampling etc. will introduce latency so stay away from those if you want to keep latency low.

How does aggregating affect latency and is "drift" as good as using a dedicated clock signal between interface units? I have a Roland Octacapture and am thinking of adding another 8 channel interface yet am hesitant to do so because of possible latency/clock issues or complications that would be avoided by just buying a dedicated 16 channel AD/DA converter and adding more mic pres. In this way, I'd use the Octacapture for passing its preamp signals direct to the AD converter and adding more discrete mic preamps. Initially, I was going to add an inexpensive Behringer interface set up almost identical to the Roland and aggregate the two but now I'm thinking I'd be locked into this setup and perhaps could have spent a little more money for a system that is more flexible with combining discrete mic preamps with AD conversion.

Dedicated clock at hardware level is probably always gonna be superior. This merging of audio interfaces as aggregate device is at software level but works pretty well. But I’ve not experienced any particular drift issues when running setups like UAD Apollo Twin X, Komplete Audio 6 with the Steinberg Ur 22. Though I did hear about people having issues with cheaper gear, like Behringer. I did however run into issues earlier in another (not aggregate device) setup running Arturia Audio Fuse 8 pre via ADAT into the UAD Apollo twin X at certain sample rates. So now I ended up getting a Antelope Audio Zen Tour Synergy core which is an awesome interface with enough I/O for my setup. Gonna try the Audio Fuse 8pre with this setup later.

You don't need to do adat connections between the audio interfaces. That's the beauty of it. You just connect more audio interfaces to your Mac (via Usb, TB or whatever) and merge them in an aggregate device. Not every device work in this setup. BUT, the most I've tried have worked like a charm in such a aggregate device setup.

I brought the band into the studio, and had some problems with digital distortion. I'm wondering if there's a clock sync problem with the Zoom L20 and the Focusrite stuff? Is this what that "drift correction" is for?

  • @MattiasHolmgren

It works like this: 1. set your most reliable clock source (ie main audio interface) as master clock device. 2. Activate drift correction for all other sources that does not do clock sync via hardware (ie your already syncing via adat audio interface settings. 3. Also make sure you run same sample rate on all devices in the chain. Try that and see what happens. Use two audio interfaces to begin with before trying to expand the setup. Debugging 101. Hope it works out for you. I also had some glitch / weird issues with the Antelope Audio / AudioFuse 8pre before making the correct settings. Look up which of the audio interfaces that has the best sync clock. Antelope Audio are known for their great clocks. Do you select the aggregate device in your DAW. What mixer is it? What DAw are you using? Can you specify output ports in your DAW? There are numerous things that can be out of place. Sometimes, some gear doesnt speak well with eachpther either. What audio interface is it? My bet if all other points are ok….is that its the mixers audio driver thats not playing nice. Make sure the major ”real” audio interface is the master (first device) in your aggregate device setup.

Hi GAR, so you want to setup an external compressor and multi effect and use them as hardware effects with Bitwig Studio. For that you need to send signals out and in to your Focusrite 18i20. 1. In Bitwig dashboard/Settings/Audio - first setup all audio interface inputs and outputs (map the busses) as mentioned in my videos. Create the mono/stereo ins and outs. 2. Add the HW FX device (plugin) in Bitwig. 3. Map one of the outputs to the HW FX out. 4. Map one of the inputs to the HW FX ins. 5. Balance the mix to taste. 6. Save the HW FX device as a preset = drag the device to the rightmost "browser panel" and it will trigger a preset save. Let me know how that works. Maybe I can make a video to show this in detail later. Cheers, // Mattias 🌞

  • @MattiasHolmgren

Hi Johan! First check if your current audio interace supports direct monitoring? Direct monitoring will route the incoming signal directly to the output for instant monitoring. Also, first remove any plugins you might be using in the DAW, and see what latency you get as the starting point. If you want to work with lowest possible latency I would recommend using a more professional audio interface than Behr...Try with Antelope Audio Zen Q or Zen GO Synergy Core. They use FPGAs to handle the Antelope effects in combo with regular CPU DSP and they have like the lowest latency I've ever worked with. Also don't use plugins that introduce huge latency...like limiters, linear EQs etc. Certain plugins are evil when it comes to latency. ;) Hope the info helps Johan!

Hey Matthew. My setup: 1. Setup an aggregate device in OSX Audio / Midi Setup. 2. Always add your primary audio interface as the 1st audio device (so it is the master clock). 3. Add your secondary audio interfaces and then finally the iShowU device. Pay attention to the Input and Output numbers (especially for the iShowU device), so you know which stereo output to add inside Bitwig (or your other DAW of choice) for the iShowU. 4. In Bitwig, select the aggregated device as your output. 5. Add a second stereo output and set it to the same output number as iShowU. 6. On an output channel in the mixer make the same setup I show in my videos (I set output to the iShowU output) and add an audio receiver on that out channel to receive the audio from the master track. Done.

SOme audio interfaces work better together than others. But if you have similar interfaces it should work fine. I suggest borrowing an extra audio interface from a friend and trying this setup out first... see if it works like you plan. Before buying a new interface. Not all audio interfaces work good together for some reason. And make sure you have your best audio interface as the primary (master clock). Another solution is to hook up additional audio interfaces via ADAT optical TOS-link cable. But that requires your audio interfaces to have ADAT toslink ports.

The problem is that your OS (Mac OSX) only uses a dual stereo output. If you want to do routings like you mention you could use something like the app "Loopback" which is a very versatile app for routing audio sources. What you would do is route all the inputs you need to the stereo output of your audio interface. Now all those audio sources would be audible. In the DAW you can make all your specific routings of course, but in OS only a stereo output is used by default. With Loopback you can route however you like. ;)

My only complaint about recording in Linux is JACK audio. When JACK is enabled, all other inputs and outputs are disabled. Example: If i open Firefox, there is no audio. JACK puts the DAW in real time/full duplex mode. That's not a bad thing but, if you want to jump off your DAW, you have to shut down JACK.

Make sure your UR22 is the master (first) device, and the Digitakt is the second (slave) device. Probably not a cable issue, but rather software related. Did that help? What kind of popping is it, when does it occur?

This all occurs before even opening any DAW.

I was just showing its possible to use a bit alternative gear. I wanted you to be inspired to find stuff in your Studio you normally wouldn't use as audio interface in your Daily setup. Even the Zoom H4N / H6 is an audio interface. And a lot of gear have that option these days. Digitakt works best and with more deep options in Overbridge mode over USB. It can then stream all 8 Channels audio AND The stereo inputs of the Digi. 😀🌞

It depends on what audio interfaces you try to ”merge”, settings, which card is ”master clock”, also USB interface (what ports (2.0,3.0… a hub etc) you are connecting to) all these factors matter. I have had great success with many setups though. Atm I am running Apollo Twin X + Komplete Audio 6 mk2, works fine without issues.

YOU DID NOT ADDRESS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. DEVICE DRIVERS. I have an older M-AUDIO FAST TRACK ULTRA, and there are no updated drivers for it for OS 10.15.6 that I could find. Thus... I'm dead in the water. So how is it that you can get older MIDI interfaces to work on a Mac on current OS operating systems? If you tell me how I can make this happen, your amazing!

  • @MattiasHolmgren

On a Mac I have never needed to install specific audio drivers for any of my interfaces for several years. Most audio interfaces are USB class compliant and that means they will work out of the box with OSX. You just connect it via usb and the OS "understands" it is an audio interface and shows up in the audio/midi devices. So you can just Jump into your DAW and use the audio interface I/Os. I dont know about the MAudio Fast Track Ultra though so check with some one who owns that specific interface. Or just hook it up to a friends Mac with a more recent OSX installed. 🌞🎅

Glad to help out. Well not all interfaces will work with all OSX versions. Some (older) may need firmware upgrade etc. But I dont think manufacturers continue to support really old interfaces. Lets put it this way, my old Steinberg UR 22 mk2 still work on the brand new MacBook Pro with Apple M1 and arm64 technology. Which is awesome... Without any need for firmware upgrade. 🌞 The beauty of class compliant (yes, plug n play). But I cant speak for all audio interfaces and your unit. I do have M_audio gear, but not the MAudio interfaces. 🌞🎅

Mattias Holmgren - if I could squeeze out one more answer from you please? What interface would you recommend for iOS 10 and above? I only need to audio ins, and one MIDI in. Note: I want something with as little latency as possible. Normally I would just buy high end gear with eight+ audio inputs, but money is extremely tight right now. I a composer writer for epic soundtrack style music. I decided to i’ll upgrade my operating system after all these years. Did not know it was gonna be a fatal mistake for my DAW. Now I am in dire straits trying to meet a deadline before the end of the year. If you do not feel comfortable recommending a given product or products that might be suitable for me, I will completely absolutely understand.

@@cedarmountain3188 for iOS (iPad / iPhone) I have been using the Steinberg UR 22mk2 (€130) to record my voice / piano etc.) It has audio and midi. It does not have the best AD/DA converts but they certainly is enough quality. I have also been using an Apogee Duet 2 (for iPad/Mac/PC) but it's in a totally different price-range.€630. Right now I am using a Komplete Audio 6 which is think is a nice decent interface with decent converters and good I/O. Steinberg released a more recent model of the UR called Steinberg UR22C which also works with mac/pc/iOS (ipad /iphone) and it has better S/N ratio so I do recommend that one for you. It's at good price approx €160. If you do decide to grab one - use my amazon affiliate link - amzn.to/3hezKzk - and you will also support my KZread channel work! UR22C work with (macOS Sierra, macOS High Sierra, macOS Mojave, macOS Catalina...probably also the more recent ones as I said my UR22mk2 does. ) Thanks!

Useful but incomplete. I'm on Sonoma and BW5.1. First, if you don't make certain all devices are set to the same sample rate the audio device in Bitwig will just crash over and over. And so far for me only the aggregate input works. Using aggregate for output doesn't work at all as expected. Most of the output channels fail to appear as options. Overall this been a horribly frustrating process. And all I have is two devices. A Motu interface and an Analog Rytm. Really doesn't make want to hurry up and buy Bitwig.
