One trick I've found that seems to work pretty well against NPCs at least, is to fire mines backwards like you're doing in the video, while also corkscrewing, thereby shooting the mines in a spiral pattern. This seems to expand the net, so to speak, increasing the chances of landing a hit.

I've been using more mines and missiles since watching. This is helpful!

Good to hear! If you discover other ways of landing them, please share. Crimson Kain’s channel was a good source to study and observe. But hard to really describe what’s going on. This probably the best way to explain use of mines. In actual combat.

Hey man. I just wanted to let you know that I'm an alpha backer and I took a (long) break from the game back around the time engineers were introduced, due to the growing grind. I was always of the opinion that the big selling point of this game pvp-wise is that the outcome is determined by both how well you prepared (outfit) and how good of a pilot you are and not just how long you're willing to spend on trivial tasks. It’s exactly how I play. I don’t grind for anything. If I do grind, it’s just for the exact amount I need. I actually chose small ships due to their low rebuy. I hate credit grinding. Unless some super easy billion can be made in an hour. (Which I did once 5 years ago and I’m still sitting in same cash then) due to my low rebuy costs. Most of my builds are barely maxed out. It’s just enough to get the job done when I go hunting. Because I don’t go full upgrade in one go. I get to really experience each minor stats update affect the performance. Then continue to adjust from there. Fine tuning instead of min-maxing. I think these are the reason why players leave, they get burnt out. Sucked into the grind, when they don’t have to. They don’t need to. You should come back. Pace yourself. There’s a lot to dig j to now. It’s more fun for sure! Thank for tuning in.

But I was exactly like you, but when I got back and realized how poor time had made me, I figured out how to make easy cash with minimal effort and now its meh :p Now I can make around those 800m in 4 hours or so, when I've got all the missions set up. More like 10-12 hours when wing missions. So give me a day or something :p Getting rich while basically afk is the only reason I would ever conceive of buying a fleet carrier, but I've been back since the end of march or something and now I actually have the money, just haven't pulled the trigger :p I'm a poor man if I buy before making some more, so why not share the wealth when it costs me nothing but a slightly longer nap? :D Do tell me tho, would this be your largest fan tip?

This is awesome, I never would have figured them to be that effective.

We run very similar builds except I run a Mk3 and two Imp hammers instead of adv missiles. I also actually run entirely shieldless with 2 high cap heatsinks for utility. I avoid getting shot at frag or not by going silent running and dropping heat sinks and synth more of needed. After shield gen is blasted by the mines, I snipe the power plant with the hammers.

I love that configuration too. My earlier designs was close to that. 3 Small LR Super Penetrator rails on top of Cobra Mk IV. Then 2 Medium Cascade Mines. It actually made sense to put LR on this slow ship. But eventually opted for These rapid fire adv. missile rack with Penetrators. I feel like they’re more effective, no WEP draw or heat generated. I do miss the Imperial Hammers though.

I gotta look him up and study his videos. I’m barely understanding the use of the means mines. I need to see how dive bombings are used and the techniques to land them.

I'm rather new to this. Do mines "target" him or do they have their own sort of trajectory? How about placing on the ship of mine launchers? front/back etc? What about pack hounds next to mines? TY in advance ;) - For some reason (maybe it's the ship) but I hit myself alot with mine launchers. Maybe placements? What about movement? Good video, awesome :)

Mines doesnt have their own trajector as they're stationary. There is a 1 second delay when it settles after launching. It inherits your speed for 1 second, then a 2 second arming time. 150 meter proximity detection / blast radius. Your opponent has to collide with them or get close enough at 150m to detonate. Ive never used packhounds. As for hitting yourself, it happens to some ships like T9 if flying forward and launching. Best to reverse and launch, to ensure you have good separation with mines. Also try not to turn while launching.

Excellent man, since I haven't got the cobra mk4. What ship do you recommend for this combo? I feel like I need a medium ship with high speed and maneuverability, was thinking about the alliance ships or possibly the FAS.

You can certainly use medium ships. However, I think when your flying those types, you can already have enough DPS to pop shields w/o relying on mines. Only reason why I use mines and flechettes is because it’s the only way (that I know) that can make small ships viable and even out the battlefield against high MJ / high Hull medium/large ships. If I did fly a medium ship with mines, it will probably be alliance ships like you mentioned. Their large hard point options can allows multiple effects to be equipped.

thanks for this, nice footage! just a question: for mines: do you fire when their reticle matches that of the missiles or do you fire using the missiles reticle, as if they were the missiles?

Did the mine nerf to the 5sec arm time get changed? I feel like you wouldn't be able to fight this way if it didn't. I'm trying to learn how to use mines and this is the best video I've found so far.

I believe it’s back to 2 seconds after the uproar. It does take some practice, but the leadsight is biggest help, without it, I have no way of knowing their vector. Good luck!

I have tried to copy yours from what i can see when you go to the Modules panel, but it is the weps i need to know, how you have them engineered and what specials you have on them (ION Disruptor, learnt from this video, but basically Weps engineering & Specials would be great please)

ok so flaks are yes used in pvp... still not sure whether his screening ones weren't enough or if he simply didn't equip any (and why) also, noticed that at 3:47 you appear to have been hit by your own reverb mine :) tho after you repaired shield a little, your shield started out empty - is that because mine also depleted the shield (meaning it was at zero whole time), or you always start with empty shield after repairing it with afmu? and of course, actual information about mines "aiming" is of good quality. Requires skill to use effectively tho...

When your mine launchers are damaged to a certain point, there’s a chance that when firing them, they will malfunction and detonate internally, causing damage to your own ship. Good catch, it took me a while to learn this, but it comes with the territory of having these equipped.

I'm probably missing something, at 6:20 you say that you are launching ion mines, aren't you firing all 3 mines launchers at once? aren't those 3 grouped together in the secondary fire group? how can you choose which one to fire? Btw great fight and explanations, love it. Cheers. edit: oh sry, probably you mean that you were firing mines just hoping for the ion effect to strike, not for the other two with feedback cascade at this point, even though you must fire them all, is this correct?

Correct: My ion disrupt is grouped with cascades. Since he’s already cascades, I’m only hoping for Ions to hit. Heres my fire groups. Group A: Primary Adv Missiles Secondary All Mines. Cascade+Ion Group B: Primary: Adv Missiles Secondary Cascade Mines Only Group C: Primary: Adv Missiles Secondary: K-Warrant Scanner Only

Combat logging is actually a rare occurrence. There’s no fix. What’s shocking in my last video is that Cmdr was high combat ranking. You would think he’s aware of how negative it impacts the game experience. I expect a new player to panic and do it. But mot experienced ones. The rebuy insurance are already so low, compared to other games.

Wait....so the mines launch FORWARD of your ship? It makes more sense for them to launch rearward so you can use them to cover an escape, ya know LAY MINES behind you as you fly away. Who's the idiot at Fdev that thought that's how mines work??

This was never meant to beat the current meta. Just showing how existing tools can make the use of mines more effective, instead of just a wild guess and spamming it. I’ve used Eagle Mk II with mines and rockets just as effectively against other cmdrs just as using the Cobra Mk IV. (Minus the ion disruptor, just dual cascades) This will work against 9 out of 10 cmdrs flying around randomly. Advanced PvP with Rails and PAs are probably in FDLs that are geared at fighting other FDLs in CG. And those fights usually can take up to half hour or more if both are top tier. Even then, their top tier ships have paper hull, relying on mostly their shield boosters to tank damage and skills to avoid mines. But if they make any mistakes at getting their shields cascaded, it’s a quick GTFO for them. But in a way the mines still work against advanced PvP meta ships because immediately they are forced to go on defensive. As any aggressive posture could result in begins cascaded. This defensive posture allows for a quick low wake and evasion on my part as they mostly go Reverski and rely on range to maintain safe distance from being mined.

@@Myrrhth tough to say. If a full wing of rails and PAs come. There’s not much anyone can do except go silent. And hi-wake (depending if you can avoid mass lock). Next is the ship your flying into the CG. If you’re a big and slow transport. Gankers will just try to orbit anyways. If you somewhat resemble a combat ship with mines. Then I can see them taking extra caution and maintaining safe range. Avoid jousting you because they will hit the mines. These can play some mind games with gankers because most of their defense are in shield boosters and resistances. Most of them doesn’t believe in hull tanking because they’ll lose their precious speed advantage.

This is not going to work against someone who knows what they're doing.

That can be said with every build. It’s just a rock paper scissor game. But good news is that this will work against 90% of cmdrs out there. Theres only handful of pilots that played long enough to actually know how to counter these.

It might be hard. But it’s not impossible. I’ve done it before. I’m not sure how much experience my opponent in this video has. Being Elite, full Frags, hull tanked. He’s probably slightly above the typical ship out there. Also the fact that he pulled me, shows that he’s confident enough to feel he might actually win. His build is a legit pvp build. May not be the meta. What I’m trying to say is, you’re pretty much calling the pilot in the python a noob for running into mines. But I’d like to see you can fight him and perhaps give him a chance to prove otherwise. I’ve heard this saying so many times “this not gonna work against someone who…” my whole channel was built on this statement when someone challenge the effectiveness of hull-tank stealth. And this where we are today. Still so many pilots falls for it.

I learned nothing from this. This video was a showcase, not a tutorial.
