The best art supplies are those you actually use. I have all these markers with the exception of Sharpies. Now is the time to pull them out and remember why I bought them.

A note about my experience with primed acrylic markers. I live pretty close to sea level. When I take my art supplies camping to the mountains, the pressure change makes the paint spurt out. It might ruin a drawing and will empty the marker pretty quickly.

Pigment- based markers (Staedtler Pigment Arts Brushpens) and those that use India Inks (Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens) are lightfast, don’t fade, and don’t bleed through the page.

This brought up some memories from way back in mid 90’s when I was in a college art course. There I was given a brand of markers, Tria. (Don’t know if they are still around). They were fume-less. I got a box set that 5 or 6 ‘trays’ for different colour ‘themes’: purple to red spectrum, autumn browns, warm greys, cool greys, etc. Also, they had 3 different tips- fine, regular, and chisel, all in one pen. Replacements could be bought. Pull out the old, push in the new. And since you have the pen open, fill up the pen. Don’t throw it out when the ink runs out. Tricky part was no way to know how much.

Tip : put some sort of barrier between the back of the page and your markers to prevent bleaching through (I typically use a coat of CHEAP acrylic paint)

The little art supply store in my town carries a lot of Tombow supplies. I just got a bunch of the watercolor markers and they’re fun! I can buy them individually or in a pre-selected pack. I’ve never combined drawing with watercolor so I expect to have fun discovering what I can do.

Hi Danny. I enjoy your channel and I have a question for you. I’m an untrained but bold artist, and I’m new to sketchbook and art journaling, but I love it. Here’s what I wish I knew-what kinds of artist communities or circles are there for people who like this kind of art and want to talk about it with other artists? I’m not interested in art school per se, and I don’t want to sell my art. I just want to connect with people to exchange ideas. I’m looking for groups who meet in person to show each other their art, but I’m not sure what words or terms to search for. Can you tell me what these groups or communities might be called? Thanks very much. Keep creating great content!

Thank you for the details on each type of marker. I myself experienced bleed through in a sketchbook just the other day. Fortunately for me the back of the page was not used (yet) and it only ruined the one page. I have been shopping for some new markers so your video was perfect for me.

Thanks for this video. I bought a set of alcohol markers last month to try them out, but to my dismay not only did they bleed through the page, the ink also feathered on the paper and didn't stay in crisp lines like how it originally looked when it was laid down onto the paper. After a week or so, when I opened the sketchbook I also found that the opposite page had yellow stains where some of the marker ink on the original page had pressed against it. I figured I had the wrong paper, but in my country many sketchbooks aren't labelled with the type or weight of paper (those that do have that information tend to be more pricey and are often imported). I was wondering if the markers were more trouble than they're worth and I think your video has given me the answer: They are!

Great review and I agree alcohol markers can be a real pain sometimes. I think I'll try a starter set of watercolor ones for my card making.. I wonder is the acrylic ones would work toots? Sometimes I use stamps or want to color die cut watercolor paper.

Found acrylic markers years ago when I was in my graffiti phase. They were great for being able to “cut it your lettering” for those killer stylistic lines. I’ve used the Molotow brand to great success with them being refillable. Cutting and chopping nibs for effects is fun as well. Although they are on the more expensive side. Great stuff! Happy world of Watercolor month!!
