A Week of Sketching in Santa Fe
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
I love drawing. I do it every day, and every week I share a new Draw Tip Tuesday video here on KZread. Lately, I’ve been sharing sketchbook tours, and today I have another one for you!
With workshop season in full swing, I’ve been filling up a lot of sketchbooks. So, let’s dive into my sketchbook from May 2024, all created in beautiful Santa Fe.
In this video:
- Sketching Food: Quesadillas with cactus.
- Color Palettes: Collected from various spots in Santa Fe.
- Drawing from Video: People dancing in the mornings.
- Live Model Drawing: Timed sketches during class.
- Outdoor Sketching: Capturing the windy day at The Rail Yard.
- Iconic Diners: Drawing the lovely Plaza Café.
- Sketch Collages: From the International Folk Art Museum and on Canyon Road
- Chef’s Table: Sketching the busy kitchen scene.
- People Drawing Class: Practicing hands and feet.
- Sketch Stories: Using limited palettes and frames.
- Drink and Draw: A fun group session.
- Final Morning: A relaxing coffee sketch date.
- Back Home: Observing people while waiting for a friend.
Sketchbook shown: Hahnemühle watercolor book, size A5
Assignment for This Week: Look around you and find a color palette. Pick three or four colors (and maybe black with your pen) and do a drawing right now. Have fun!

I miss you too! I was in Paris a few weeks ago and thought of you so many times. Came by the bookshop we found so many fun children’s books for your research, remember? ❤️
It looks like you had a wonderful time in our desert Southwest here in America. I have been to New Mexico but not Santa Fe. The colors and vibes down there stay with you for life!

I did have a wonderful time, thanks!
Always inspiring! I love the idea of capturing the "vibe" of a location by simply documenting the colors on a page for later reference. Brilliant! I have to tell you, I am a US citizen living in Europe. It's been 10 years since I've visited Santa Fe, but your sketch book and color choices really brought back a lot special memories. The power of a sketch book! Thank you!

Nice. Shame you didn't see any Indigenous events, quite colorful dress for people drawing. Love your sketchbook tours. I try to draw more people in my urban sketching now due to watching you.

May I just say that I had a LOT of practice to get where I am now, rather than it just being a talent/gift?

I love Taos, Santa Fe, and most all of New Mexico, and I live in Oklahoma, another great place to use your art skills. I have sketched over most of the state. Be it mountains, desert, city scenes or rural, it is a great place to pull out your art supplies and put them to work. Another great point about New Mexico is its people. I have met, worked with, sketched, and just waved to in passing many, many of its citizens. Not once have I met one person I would say I wish I had not met. They are very friendly, helpful when you are in need of directions or advice, and they easily make you feel like you have known them forever. I cannot wait to go back with plein air kit in hand.

What great experiences!
The inside back cover has a piece that looks like Alaska Native art. That was fun to see.

It’s a sticker I received from one of the workshop participants
With all that practice, your figure drawing should be less generic than it is.
