    Using a mirrorless camera what you see is what you get so no one should overexpose or underexpose a photo accidentally. Yes, you are seeing it in JPEG, not RAW. The light meter is a must for non- mirrorless cameras to get a "Correct Exposure". Zero is the so-called "Correct Exposure" based on the scene and metering mode! Some don't get manual mode until you show them the light meter. 100% they can still put in the wrong settings to get zero using the light meter but I think it gives them some peace of mind when they see a "Correct Exposure" in M mode. They become more relaxed. In the past, I found it's a must for many new photographers trying to get out of auto modes. Great video, Glad to see that ISO was the last part of the puzzle to get "Correct Exposure", Some still teach to set it first like in the film days. Thanks

    Man how I wish I had digital 20 years ago. No waiting to see "what I got" and if I missed it. I have learned a lot much faster. I tell everyone don't shoot auto. You won't learn that way. I enjoyed the video and have saved it to share with others that ask me.. "What settings did you use for that picture?" "What settings do I need to shoot the moon?" I show them the exposure triangle and try to explain how to understand settings. Now I can send them this. Thank you.

    Hi Vanessa, I appreciate the simplicity with which you break down each element. Any thoughts on beginners using program or one of the priority modes to start making exposure decisions before they jump into fully manual shooting? From LinkedIn/Lynda training alone, I definitely encountered a lot of different perspectives on which shooting mode was best.

  • @VanessaJoy

    @VanessaJoy

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think they should learn it all :) but usually yes start with program, then probably aperture priority and then manual. Still all beginner stuff to learn though. And ultimately you don’t have to shoot manual to be a professional either. Do what works for you, but do have understanding of it all. :)

    Martin Parr shoots in Program Mode as a Magnum photographer. IMO, there is no such thing as as the best rather than personal preferred. A question should also be asked as well, is "Do I look stupid?" to do something in a hard way. I shot in full manual mode four decades ago because I had to, but it is the result that counts and not how or which camera/lens. Of course, as part of one's education and knowing how and when to use other modes can be an advantage. 🙂

    @@VanessaJoy For beginners using M might be usefull to understand the exposure triangle but I prefer to focus on the action and composition and not on the settings (I know the exposure triangle :-) ). If I'd use manual on weddings or concerts, I would have to delete 80% of my pics. You don't get a second chance on those events. I don't want to fidget with settings and buttons. I hate back button focus as well :-)

    While I think is good for everyone to understand the common concepts of photography such as Manual Mode and ISO settings, I don't thing it's the right things for "beginners" to worry about with regards to taking better photos. For beginners interested in those specifically, I would suggest understanding 3 of the 5 W's (Why, When, What) and the 'Hows' behind using them. A large percentage of beginners will actually benefit from leaving ISO as its lowest native setting and using M mode only for certain specific things like Fireworks, Astrophotography, Studio Photography, some macro photography (especially if you are doing stacked focus photography). That said, for beginners, Program Auto [P] is a qood option (to quickly get out of Auto) for many types of photography as it opens up every setting and menu option the camera has. But for people looking to take more control of their camera and the results of images, Aperture Priority [Av, A] is likely best suited for most beginners (with Shutter Priority [Tv, S] being best suited for Action/motion photos obviously. If beginners just keep it this simple they'll have less to worry about, less to remember, yet still get great shots with the results they are looking for. With any type of half-decent light, the beginner will only need to adjust 1 setting: Aperture or Shutter speed (depending on what they are doing), the camera then evaluates the scene and chooses the rest - this is a bit over simplified, but the beginner can just focus their attention on shooting more and settings less. The only other thing (setting) a beginner might need to know to change is the feature/setting to override the cameras decision on brightness using the exposure compensation button [+/- or * button] - and even then usually only minor adjustments are needed if at all. That's 1 setting adjustment for the beginner with maybe adjusting 1 more occasionally vs adjusting 2 settings every time and accidentally screwing up the 3rd (grin). Beginners looking to improve their photos should first focus in understanding lighting and image composition then look to get out of Auto - using Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority modes. A lot of beginners think that Manual Mode mode means professional, but in reality it's just more of a specific use mode for many. Sorry if I sounded sanctimonious, that's not my intention, I really do appreciate that you are sincerely vested in helping people improve their photography. I tend to be "ISO averse" while living life in Aperture Priority land 99% of the time. Happy shooting.
