Did you have to get a new key made ?
Ok great. But what do I do if I do not have the original key. Ours is an a electric lock to which we have the combination but no key. How do I rekey the lock with out replacing the entirety?
Is there a way to get in without the key and to avoid a lock smith?

A skilled person can pick the lock, but most locksmiths will prolly just drill it out because they're lazy and/or unskilled pickers.
But, is there any way to do this if you've LOST your original key and that is why you need to reset it?

You can do it manually, but it is fiddly and you have to take the lock apart. Kwikset sells a "reset cradle" that makes it easier. Not sure how much it costs.
My concern is a thief could technically buy this tool to carry around and that'd be an easy break in.

Its used from inside. A 3rd bolt isnt bad either.

The deadbolt is easy, but you said nothing about rekeying the doorknob.

See the youtube video posted by Kwikset. It's more thorough. The tool doesn't need to be inserted deep.
