How to Use じゃない
じゃない has multiple functions. You can use it to make a negative statement, but other than that, it can be used to make a suggestion, dismiss someone's comment or show an emotion of happiness or disappointment when you encounter something unexpected. In this video, I explain different ways じゃない is used with many examples.

THANK YOU for this! I usually pause to watch the onscreen transcript, but this is helpful too because KZread shows translations of your comment text, and that sometimes helps me get the jokes. But it doesn’t help me get ALL the jokes … for example, may I ask you, or anyone here: in the dialogue between sensei and Takashi, the auto-translation explains the “breasts” joke … but what is the joke with おはようごぜえます in the first place, is that an error in pronunciation, or is it a different but impolite form of the greeting? I didn’t understand that one. Thank you again!! ArigatougoZAImasu!!
Kaname could seriously write a top tier soap opera. And I would watch it.

Forget Japanese learners-Kaname's videos should be mandatory viewing for all aspiring screenwriters!
One of the uses for じゃない/じゃん sounds like it could sub out for "if it isn't." Like when you see a friend in English, a lot of times you'll say "Well, if it isn't my old buddy Sam!" 「あ、サムさんじゃん/じゃない!」fits the same bill. Same for if you open a unexpected/exciting gift. Depending on your inflection/how you say it, it could be "Oh! Well, if it isn't a Dyson! Thank you!" or "Oh, well if it isn't a mug. Guess I'll find some room for this one. Thanks, I guess."

As always, 5 minutes in and your scenarios are completely over the top, but totally relatable at the same time. すごくい

Your content is always so dedicated to the nuances in expressions and vocabulary. Truly one of the best language channels out there.
Glad to see you getting the deserving praise. The dialogues are so good! Hearing Kaname curse in English is always so hilarious to me for some reason too

Aggressive Japanese is seriously like a whole other language. I’m intermediate Japanese and cannot understand anything without the subtitles.
Thank you so much! Your lessons are so invaluable! I don't think even most paid courses cover these topics in this much detail. It's literally the closest I've gotten to 1:1 personal tutor!

I know right. Hes a beast! It really is like having a personal tutor. Chefs kiss
Kaname going crazy with some of these skits....
Now hold up! I did not give you permission to have me on the edge of my seat like that for the "Sato Mai" example. I was clutching my pearls, straight gagged, flabbergasted, too stunned to speak! I felt like I had walked in on something; it was that convincing lol I know you write stellar stories
Love your videos! The attention to put Furigana everywhere, teaching intonation, speaking in a clear manner and not too fast. Will end up watching all of your videos!
i'm not learning Japanese. i'm mostly watching because i enjoy the fun skits :) . and actually, i really love the serious and dramatic skits, too. (i also like seeing how Japanese has structures so different than English, but that's a secondary enjoyment for me!)
Kaname was an unexpected delight - I thought he would just be another handsome teacher, but he turned out to be so much more. ✨

That dialogue about adultery was pure comedy gold, I need more things like this in my japanese practice😂
Recently encountered じゃないじゃない in a novel, got confused, should have known they both sound different from each other. It makes so much sense when it is spoken and listened rather than reading it in writing
The differences in pitch and delivery are fascinating! And the dialogues are so funny 😆
I feel kinda dumb fr not realizing じゃん was short fr じゃない, but more surprised that no one bothered to mention it in other videos mentioning that grammar point. かなめ先生、ありがとうございましたね〜!
かなめさんの作った物語を何時間でも聞けるわ😭😂
I love how well made are your scripts, isnt like those robotic phrases haha
Another wonderfull lesson from Kaname Sensei! Thank you very much! I wanted to know if you have any plans on making a video about させる? Even though i already know about it, watching your videos always teaches me something new about japanese forms and expressions! Once again, thank you very much for your awesome videos!

"...ja nai/...ja nai?" can easily be remembered as "it is not (the case) that.../is it not the case that...?"

Thank you so much for this! I haven't had じゃない properly explained to me. Knew the jist of all the uses but not about the different pitch for each type. Kaname-sensei is SO AWESOME! And also the dialogue is SO natural. Perfect for shadowing to get used to colloquial Japanese. Once again, thank you so much, Kaname-sensei!!!

Another day, another thing Finnish and Japanese people agree upon: if someone surprises you with a nice gift, you respond with disbelief and essentially saying "no, it isn't!" in a falling pitch 🤝

I really appreciate Kaname's use of discursive tone in his explanations. On a related note, Ninja Warrior's English dub is superb; it captures the discursive tone, the sentiment, of the performance - at least, /I\ think so.
Great video, very helpful! Could I suggest that you look at using some light diffusers or something similar to reduce the glare from your lighting off of your glasses? Your setup is great but I think the glare was very noticeable for this video

That downward inflection of surprise or disappointment is similar to something in English. You say something like, "Well, if it isn't the man himself^😁" or you say "Well..😡 if it isnt the scumbag himself\.."
