How to Use じゃない

じゃない has multiple functions. You can use it to make a negative statement, but other than that, it can be used to make a suggestion, dismiss someone's comment or show an emotion of happiness or disappointment when you encounter something unexpected. In this video, I explain different ways じゃない is used with many examples.

THANK YOU for this! I usually pause to watch the onscreen transcript, but this is helpful too because KZread shows translations of your comment text, and that sometimes helps me get the jokes. But it doesn’t help me get ALL the jokes … for example, may I ask you, or anyone here: in the dialogue between sensei and Takashi, the auto-translation explains the “breasts” joke … but what is the joke with おはようごぜえます in the first place, is that an error in pronunciation, or is it a different but impolite form of the greeting? I didn’t understand that one. Thank you again!! ArigatougoZAImasu!!

One of the uses for じゃない/じゃん sounds like it could sub out for "if it isn't." Like when you see a friend in English, a lot of times you'll say "Well, if it isn't my old buddy Sam!" 「あ、サムさんじゃん/じゃない!」fits the same bill. Same for if you open a unexpected/exciting gift. Depending on your inflection/how you say it, it could be "Oh! Well, if it isn't a Dyson! Thank you!" or "Oh, well if it isn't a mug. Guess I'll find some room for this one. Thanks, I guess."

Great video, very helpful! Could I suggest that you look at using some light diffusers or something similar to reduce the glare from your lighting off of your glasses? Your setup is great but I think the glare was very noticeable for this video

I would have to agree both that this video was its usual high quality, and that future ones would benefit from less glare reflecting from his glasses. 🎄

That downward inflection of surprise or disappointment is similar to something in English. You say something like, "Well, if it isn't the man himself^😁" or you say "Well..😡 if it isnt the scumbag himself\.."

Thank you for your videos. I am just starting to learn Japanese and found your video. You inspire me to make a video teaching Korean and English. But I am curious, are you a professor?
