How to use HIGH PASS FILTERS
#mixdownonline #mixingtips #highpassfilter
In this video, I share with you how I use High Pass Filters (AKA Low Cut filters). Also, I point out some common mistakes that I did myself when I first started to mix and that I see people doing as well.
This video should help you to increase your knowledge of the amazing mixing tool.

    You make some valid points in a nice presentation, thank you. However I fear that the take away from this is propagating the myth that one should HP almost every track. This is wrong and a surefire way to tell an novice mix. I’d suggest only using a HPF IF NEEDED, for it generally causes more problems than if fixes! For instance, if you were to run a pure test tone through any EQ, and watch a frequency based correlation meter, you will see correlation issues with ANY HP sloped @ any frequency. Why do that? With a Linear Phase EQ you will cause a ringing, by doing the same, not to mention probable increase in latency, if you are using a software EQ. I urge you to be clear that this is NOT A RULE, in any way, just a specific fix for specific problems. As most professionals, I HP (or BP or LP) ONLY when there is something in my client’s material, in those frequencies, which are causing issues. Only I f there is something that needs to be removed because it’s causing a problem in the mix, perhaps it’s masking something, or there is some kind of bad information in those frequencies, or any other problem, certainly address it, and follow some of the good info in the video on doing that i.e. only within context, being aware of phase relations, etc. but only if needed. I appreciate you giving some general information on how to HP, but you kind of made it sound like you should at every opportunity, which I’m sure was not your intention. Unfortunately, there are many KZread’s saying that high passing IS a rule and you should almost blindly HP almost every track and that just is poor advice. The only real RULE to follow when tracking, mixing mastering, remastering ....anything you are doing in a studio, (whether you are in a full studio or just in a bedroom or project studio) is: LESS IS MORE. That ‘rule’ you can take to the bank!

    Good stuff, Chris. I've been telling people to do that for years. Not only does it clean up a mix, dropping the unnecessary low frequencies also keeps effects like compression from being triggered mysteriously. Also, 99% of audio systems can't reproduce frequencies below 40Hz. The amps can usually reproduce the lows but speakers have difficulty unless they are very expensive. Even if one has speakers which can reproduce frequencies down to 20 Hz, most rooms can't handle those with any kind of accuracy. just sayin'

    hi chris! wich would be the work around if I need to aply HPF to already visually-phase-align kick drum and bass tracks? i think i could use the same plugin and slope value in each track, but i would need to set it at different hz, getting different shifts..

  • @mixdownonline

    @mixdownonline

    4 жыл бұрын

    Are you're talking about a situation where the Kick and the bass were recorded near each other and there is bleed? Otherwise, there's no phase relationship between the 2 signals, being completely different recorded signals. But let's assume the kick and Bass were recorded in the same room and both tracks have bleed from the other track, in that case, I would reach for a Linear Phase EQ to High Pass..

    How do you get rid of things like string noise.. for example: Moving quickly on a bass guitar from position to position can sometimes produce a high, short squeak. I don't seem to hear it until I've added some gain to the bass track and it starts to come out and it's not something I would ideally like to hear.

  • @mixdownonline

    @mixdownonline

    4 жыл бұрын

    A Dynamic EQ can work to attenuate the frequencies where the squeak is more present. Other times, I bring them down manually if it ends up being a problem in the context of the mix.

    Another Chris video. Thank you. I have never tried a linear phase filter or eq. You mentioned the pre ring problem. I have read too that they are very intensive in computer power requirements. The fact that you use the fab as insert to do the filter instead of, for example, the filter function in the pre, has any reason?

  • @mixdownonline

    @mixdownonline

    4 жыл бұрын

    I used the Fabfilter HPF because it shows more data at the lower end than the one in Cubase so better visual for educational purposes. In a real mix situation, sometime I will use the Pre HPF in Cubase and other times the Fabfilter one or from a channel strip if inserted on the first insert space.

    Good advice on grouping related tracks and high passing them together. But what if I have two unrelated tracks playing the same thing? For example, suppose I use a bass guitar and a synth bass (possibly an octave lower) playing the same thing and I want to blend the two sounds together, to add more sub. Am I likely to run into phase problems doing that?

  • @mixdownonline

    @mixdownonline

    4 жыл бұрын

    In that case, it doesn't matter much since they are 2 different recorded signals, opposed to a kick drum recorded with 2 mics, now these 2 kick tracks will need to be in phase since it's the same signal recorded on 2 tracks at the same time. Hope that helps!

    Chris: When you record one instrument with two or more microphones, the phase will never be 100% anyway so what difference does it make? I am learning about phase a lot now because I record the Cajon with 2 microphones: one on the front and one on the back, and no matter where I place the mikes, I still don't get a recording that is 100% in phase, the best I can do is shift one track like you did in your other video on "phase when recording drums" to my taste if I hear it sounds better. When you mike a snare with two mikes like you said in the video, do you use placement to get the phase right? If you spent a lot of time to get the mic placement right then yes you would want to be careful about that but in any case can't you just shift the track a bit? Also, one other thing, when you do create a group bus for your multi-miked tracks you avoid phase shifts but then you won't be able to make EQ adjustments on each mike which migh be what you need to do to get the best sound, so what do you do about that except use linear phase EQ?

  • @mixdownonline

    @mixdownonline

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question, when I talk about recording a source with 2 microphones, I'm reffering to 2 mics capturing the source at the same distance so in phase, like 2 mics on a guitar cab, mic overheads in X/Y Stereo. Your Cajon will be different since the back of the Cajon has a different sound than the front. You can EQ then separately but you will still need to make sure both mics are in phase with each other since they are capturing the same source. My overheads for example are in phase from the recording stage, so if I add a HPF on one track and not the other, I will get a phase shift on one of the tracks and will put those 2 tracks out of phase. That's a situation where I will group them together before EQin them
