Maps are more for more than just tactical combat! In this video, we draw a new map and talk about how to use art and maps in games! Game Beautifully!

The idea of dropping a piece of art in front of your group as a map and letting them decide what the next adventure will bring is fantastic. My favorite style of GMing is very impromptu, give a basic situation and let the players drive the story but it's always only one situation. This concept blew my mind; open up dozens of adventures with one drawing and be ready to dance around with the ideas the players give you, brilliant. A picture is worth a thousand words, or at least a solid ten adventures.

I really like the 'I see' 'I feel' 'I wonder' trick you mentioned... would be a great way to keep developing ideas while making a map/scenario, too. Thanks for sharing!

See Feel Wonder feels like a real game changer. I have an english degree but I still sometimes find myself not knowing where to start with certain art forms, but that simple approach provides a good inroad to engaging something!

There are many things to learn about art, but I think it’s often best to really think about where the impact for your experience comes from first! See Feel Wonder is actually based on hermeneutics, which was originally developed for examining literature! Cory Olsen, the Tolkien Professor also likes to use similar slow reading techniques to dig up the meaning from the text itself, instead of extra textual sources! It’s fun!!

I really like how you incorporate philosophical and literary theory ideas into your approach to making maps and adventures. Your reference to Gille Deleuze in the pointcrawl episode caught my attention, and the idea of treating an RPG map as a text in the literary theory sense is also really cool.

This video really resonated with me. 'I see/feel/wonder' is the cornerstone of how I break down visual story telling and cues in comics. Keep up the great work!

It’s interesting how differently people think, in that I don’t feel anything when I look at the map. But I do get inspired to tell a story about what’s happening. Rather than feeling and wondering, I start creating and storytelling. And that’s what’s great. Even though my thought process is different, the art is still inspiring a useful response for the game.

So many good questions! Symbols are indeed great and I will add 'slippery' to my vocabulary when talking about them because they definetly are!

really nice video, I particularly like how you mix a little bit of postmodern theory in your videos, it´s a clever touch mate. :)

Big fan of combining the lesson of ignoring something's stigma or "rules" and stealing like an artist. Take Wendigos for example. Some people think big scary snow monster, disregarding the beliefs of Native American cultures where they originated. Wendigos are really a lesson on gluttony and desperation, that cannibalism turns one into a monster. This makes me feel warned and cautious, both of the dangers of gluttony and of the souls who became the creatures. I wonder if they can be saved, or how they behave, or what they'd do to me if I was found by one. Descriptions of Wendigos never (or very rarely) had the elements of a deer, but the giant grotesque humanoid deer image just feels right to me. I can put forth my design of them based on those ideas, feeings, and wonders with respect to the Natives. Then, other people can take my interpretation of this concept that I like and make their own.

I've recently discovered your channel and have been watching to learn more about maps and game design (fantastic stuff btw!) but I was struck by how "see. feel. wonder." seems like it would be a great way to help (especially newer) players ease their way into roleplaying as their characters and interacting/engaging with the world. Really cool stuff, thank you!
