How To Use An Angle Grinder-Angle Grinder Safety Tips
Hey Everyone welcome to #UltimateHandyman. In this video I will show you How To Use An Angle Grinder-Angle Grinder Safety Tips. Hope you all watch and enjoy this angle grinder tutorial.
How to use an angle grinder safely is very important. This video shows you almost everything you need to know about using an angle grinder. Angle grinders are one of the most versatile power tools that you can get,
but they are also potentially dangerous if used incorrectly. For people working in industry in the UK you will probably have to go on an abrasive wheels training course before you are allowed to use a grinder on site,
but for most people there is nothing to stop someone with no training from buying a grinder and having a serious accident. This video is not meant to take the place of an abrasive wheels course but is meant to help people who may need their memory refreshing about some points.
It is always best to be safe than sorry when using grinders as grinder accidents can be life changing.

knife safety : apply tension only away from you, when walking/running/climbing stairs hold it with the blade downwards like the murderer in psycho angle grinder safety : 30 minute long video therefore I propose the formula d = u^4 where u = usefulness and d = danger

This is me: 1. Arrogantly thinks I don't need to see the safety tips part " it's boring." 2. Googles grinder accident images. 3. Humbly goes to Home Depot and buys all the recommended safety supplies 4. Finishes watching video and makes wife breath a sigh of relief. 5 Subscribes to Channel. 6 Thanks the Ultimate Handyman for possibly preventing a horrific accident.

Apologies for not uploading a video last week but I am incredibly busy. This video took me days to film (in a cold garage) and edit. I’m sorry that the video is so long but it was difficult trying to cram most of what you learn on an 8 hour abrasive wheel training course into a 30 minute video. If you could please like, comment and share the video that would be much appreciated! I hope everyone has a great Sunday ;-)

Wow what a fantastic video, when it comes to safety there are no compromises. I watched this through as while I’ve bought my Dewalt battery powered unit I’m still to try it out. So for me this was just the job. Thank you for delivering this video, only one way to tell it and you did. Regards Mike

Hey Chez, Happy New Year Mate !, Thanks for taking the time out of your busy days to create and post another great video, I watched every second. These days, I am but a Home DIY’er, but I do own a grinder with a selection of Metal, Masonry, and wire wheels - and the PPE to go with it ! Though I haven’t yet used it, although I have seen how versatile they are, and have watched the safety videos too ! The reason I bought it ? - The batteries ! It’s the DeWalt 60V Flexvolt version ( I’m British, but live in Texas - I think you have them over there, but it’s the 54V Line, same thing, just marketing... ) Anyway, Came across a great Sale, Where I could get TWO of the batteries, the rapid charger and the Grinder itself, for the price of One battery !, couldn’t turn it down, as I already have other Flexvolt tools, plus these batteries are backwards compatible with the 20V ( British 18V ) line, of which I have a few too... I don’t do a lot of metal work, though I may use it soon to do some paint removal ( Mask ! ), And a friend recently discovered he’s lost the key to the lock on his storage unit ... Another reason the battery version will come in handy - Nowhere to plug anything in out where that is.... Anyway Mate, I’m droning on, thanks for the info and advice, Stay safe !

Hi Tom, Happy new year ;-) The Flexvolt stuff looks amazing and from what I have seen it is just like using a mains powered machine. The new (to me) paint removal discs are superb - kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4GFr81wepyapZs.html The beauty of grinders is that they will cut through anything, so it will make real light work of a lock on a storage unit. Have fun with the grinder and stay safe mate ;-) Thanks for the comment

A model video for others to aspire to. No inane "what's up guys" intro; no boring, self-indulgent efforts at humour, and no irrelevant chatter about the personal life of the presenter. Just a very well presented, very informative and interesting video, containing everything anyone contemplating use of a grinder should know about using one safely.

So I just bought my 1st angle grinder for the specific use of removing rust; I am my personal handy-woman. I had watched another video on angle grinders by See Jane Drill who stated that this is the 2nd most dangerous tool after the table saw. That is when I decided to watch more safety videos. Your video is EXCELLENT! I now feel much more confident using the grinder and I am glad I have the appropriate PPE. Thanks so much for being so thorough. Also, I love your accent!

Thank you for taking the time to make this. I read below it took you days. I always knew they were called an angle grinder but saw people using them for cutting and polishing in other videos etc... so it's great to finally understand about the different discs and the proper methods of use (i.e. _not_ actually using a cutting disc at an angle). Believe it or not there are people like me who've only ever used a power drill. I can't understand those that are saying you're too pedantic - It's better to show something being done correctly, safely, properly. Once someone is proficient and experienced they can make their own choices about taking shortcuts (I'd hope they don't put anyone else at risk) but it's stupid to learn badly in the first place. Those google accident images were really eye opening. Cheers much appreciated.

I agree, this was incredible and really stressed the safety aspects of this very dangerous machine. I just bought one for a single job in my house, and going in without knowing what you're doing can lead to very serious problems. Who would have thought the discs have an expiration date and can cause so much damage - I will just throw mine out after use so I don't forget and use in 10 years

I've cut myself with an angle grinder a few times and every time it was because of kick back. Once I was grinding the top of a tank of some sort with a flap disk... I was on my knees in a very awkward position with all kind of pipes and stuff around me and the grinder then decided to catch on something and jump straight to my knee. It made a nice oval hole. Remember the trousers being soaked with red liquid. Another incident happened while cutting some steel structure right in front of my face. The grinder then got this great idea to make a quick jump to my face. First I was like... "what just happened" Then I felt something warm and wet gushing down my mouth. the thin cutting disk had made about a 3cm long straight hole between the nose and upper lip. the grinder really just made contact for a fraction of a second in both incidents but it surely cut flesh with ease.

So what causes kick-back? Excellent video BTW.

  • @ultimatehandyman

    @ultimatehandyman

    6 жыл бұрын

It can be caused when the created gap in the work piece closes onto the rotating disc, say for example you were cutting a large piece of 3 inch square bar that was 6 feet in length and you tried to cut it in the middle to make 2,three foot lengths. If the metal was not supported correctly it could sag in the middle causing the disc to be pinched.

In some ways you are (in my opinion) a bit too pedantic about safety and "proper uses", as i think probably no one is following all of the rules when on a real jobsite On the other hand I really admire you and I think you should always point out what is the right procedure to do something nowadays a lot of people, myself included, are approaching DIY project without any formal training, learning from videos and guides on the internet; doing this can be really useful, but I do admit that a lot of times we tend to pick up bad habits just because we see people doing that, without even knowing why in this situation videos like this are really helpful as they give us the knowledge we lack, because we haven't studied it at school or on a jobsite, so that we fully understand what we are doing, what we are risking, what we should do and what we shouldn't but, most important, why thank you

Thanks, when I first started my website (before KZread was heard of) I used to write articles and take pictures of how to do D.I.Y tasks. Back then I used to frequent a few webmaster forums and stumbled across a guy that had a website that was aimed at trailer repair (caravans), he looked at a few of my articles and picked on one in particular that said "simply knock in a nail", in one of the paragraphs. He told me that you can't tell people to "simply knock in a nail" as many people do not know how to do it! From that day on I always tried to make my articles (and videos) absolutely idiot proof (which can make me seem pedantic). As I have mentioned in previous comments, there are a lot of videos and you can even see this on US TV programs where people are using angle grinders without the guard. This is downright dangerous and if people think the guard is not needed they will remove it. I've been lucky to go on courses through my work and feel it is important to pass on information that I have learnt which could keep people safe. Hi Ian, flap discs are miles better to use. There is no chance of the disc breaking apart and because they are not made from resin there is no expiry date on them. I'd choose a flap disc over an abrasive disc any day ;-) Thanks for the comment

Been using a masonry grinder with water to try to keep the dust down, didn't know that it would degrade the disk and risk exploding it. Very glad I watched this before anything bad happened. Going to take a safety course and make sure I know everything I need to know before picking up another angle grinder. Very timely video, and very informative, thank you!

I've seen people cutting metal on KZread, using water to prevent the metal getting hot and it always makes me cringe. If you use a diamond disc you can use water as it will not effect the disc. It's worth going on an abrasive wheels course though as they should cover everything. Thanks for the comment

Brilliant video fella. Thank you for taking the time to make such an indepth video stating all of the necessary information. Just bought the Dewalt 405 angle grinder to take some bolts off a trailer frame, I nearly bought the same cordless grinder like yours but then realised that the newer version does have a brake and is brushless so the same as my other tools. The amount of people who use old discs and wonder why they break etc. A lot more to grinding than just wearing a pair of safety glasses.... Brilliant video and you have probably saved quite a few people having to go to A&E. Kind regards.

What a fantastic video, thank you for sharing. I am just about to buy a new Dewalt grinder after not touching one for at least 20 years. This was a great refresher and catch up on modern grinders and grind / cutting wheels. Nice to see someone explaining why certain things can't be done. Watched so many where people have removed the guard and not wearing PPE the mind boggles. If I noticed someone on my sites not using a guard or not wearing the correct PPE they would not be coming back.

I have used a nine-inch angle grinder to cut through a re-enforced concrete slab in a confined space [a stove alcove] and it was like being in a firefight. I truly respect your advice as I realized just how dangerous this machine was. It is a matter of concern that cheaply made power tools of this kind can be freely available to people on a tight budget who imagine that these can be used D.I.Y. without proper training.

Thank you for your instruction. Forget the naysayers. New to metal work here, using it to take out rivets and unmount school bus seats, repair & modify bbq pits. Also, to cut 55 gallon barrels. I do make sure the insides are not flammable from previous usage. Very informative, and will take your safety guidance seriously. Im using a 11amp 4 1/2 inch Milwaukee grinder. A suggestion: please provide a usage chart; different discs and size thicknesses to apply to various metals, wood, tile and brick application, and why? Great concise common sense approach overall and well done video to compress much info!

Omg! I've been using an angle grinder professionally for 39 years and your video has taught me so much. You have saved my life literally. I have a cable tie to lock the switch on the 9 inch and i just plug it in when my apprentice is ready. He just kicks out the plug when he's done. None of our grinders have guards so the discs become one size fits all. Makes it a bit cheaper. We also made a chainsaw attachment for the 5 inch. We used the guard for that.

This is by far the most informative video I have seen on using an angle grinder safely. A friend of mine had a disk explode on him, whilst working on a vintage car. It really messed up his face permanently, even though he had safety glasses on, (but no visor). I will now be chucking out a load of old grinding discs and ensuring I wear ALL the correct PPE equipment.....I've been a bit slipshod about wearing a visor and thick gloves. Thanks for this important advice.
