How to Use Alfalfa Pellets in Your Fall & Spring Garden Beds as Your Organic Fertilizer: Save Money!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

You can buy organic alfalfa for $5 more a bag btw. I only use alfalfa pellets as my purchased slow release organic fertilizer now-a-days. You can buy a 50 pound bag of alfalfa pellets for $15-$20 at feed stores. You can also get organic bags for about $20. I go over the benefits, how to use it, and show you bed coverage examples. Side note... if I find other fertilizer on sale at 75% off I will buy them.

When I was a kid, there used to be a product called “Litter Green”. It was cat litter made from alfalfa. My grandmother bought several pounds for her guinea pigs. Once she had sold her guinea pigs, I took the left over Litter Green scattered it in my garden and had the best vegetables I had ever grown! I was amazed at how well it worked. I’ve been a fan every since, and that was 1974.

For years, I have used fuel pellets, which are made of sawdust. They work great. Highly absorbent. I have now switched to cedar shavings. Great for odor control. I use the same for dog runs as well. Clean-up is easy too.

I knew about growing and turning over grown alfalfa into the soil to enrich it , but being an avid senior gardening it is harder for me to do , and I can’t afford to hire anyone in this time of COVID I truly enjoy your basic practical principals of gardening 🧑‍🌾 They make sense as they are practical and doable May I ask if you do not mind?, where is your Garden paradise I have gardened since I have been 5 years old one way or another and going on 71 this summer I see your the love of gardening 🧑‍🌾! Thanks for the use of the pellets , I will use it as a tea to keep out rabbits and white tail deer etc . I know Alfalfa is such a treasure house of nutrients because of its long tap root going deep into the soil and your gardening skills are so usable too bad your not in our area of Black Dirt Country here in Warwick New York, hahahah we would flock to you to learn updated methods Thank you for your video classroom May I ask have you heard about the invasive Jumping 🪱 worm Hopefully not having to deal with them yourself !😖😡☹️ They devastate the soil and cause the soil acid balance to rise into very high acidic death dealing degrees for many plants I spoke to Cornell about this for a few years There is no way to be rid of them once infested in soil so I can only use containers now and keep them high off the ground even raised bed this Spring on a pallet Your gardening advice is quite helpful to gardening this grandmother hahahah Thanks fir being there your among the top gardeners I have chosen to follow Are you a certified Master Gardener ? You certainly seem like it I am ordering your new book from Amazon 👍 Keep having a great time in your gardens a grandmothers respectful hug in a thank you from my very small garden 🪴 in Warwick New York

I would caution not to use too much, especially during the growing season. I used this as a mulch many years ago and it got so hot during the breakdown that everything, included woody plants, were fried and had to be replaced. It also attracted rabbits to the garden. It is great applied sparsely or added to your compost. It definitely heats the compost. I ave also soaked it with water and used the tea as a liquid available fertilizer.

Alfalfa cubes are even cheaper, they break down faster, and they contain more nutrients because they haven't been over-processed. BUT they are about the size of a "D" battery (only square-ish), which means they should be pre-soaked. I fill a 10-gallon tub with water, add about 1/2 a gallon of cubes, and let them soak for about an hour. The result is a rich, green "slurry" that can be applied to individual plants. GREAT RESULTS!!!

i'm a big fan, and you've made my first year of gardening more successful than i could have imagined. after i watched this video, i stumbled upon another video by an organic gardening guy who-i think- was trying to say pellets are bad. but i couldn't sit through his rambling science textbook videos and couldn't really sort out what his point was, so i'm sticking with you and buying some pellets. thanks for all you do.

So glad the first year went well. They arent bad. Some say the have residue sprays. That could be true. But you can buy organic and all that. As for pellets alone, they are fine. Gary, this was an awesome video with very practical guidance. I am definitely using this in my home garden, but also in the new community garden being planned in my township, which I am coordinating. We're building ten 12 ft x 4 ft by two ft tall raised beds, we plan to fill the bottom ft with woodchips, now will add a generous amount of pellets before starting to add topsoil. We have to bring in all the soil material because the raised beds are on a gravel base in a bocci ball court surrounded by old RR ties, so we can't allow the tie contamination to affect the gardening. Thank you SO MUCH

Making your own compost is vastly over-hyped anyhow. There, I said it! Real studies have tracked it and done the math - in order to really make enough of your own compost for a good thick top-dressing every year, you need 2 to 5 times as much plant matter as you intend to grow. Most of us just do not have that much food scraps or the space to grow a couple beds of composting plants like comfrey or Sorghum sudangrass for every bed of food. You'll notice that some famous full-time growers who advocate using tons of compost are regularly buying it by the truckload or picking up food scraps from restaurants every week to make it. At a small scale that just doesn't really add up very well, at least not for us. Yes, we def compost all our food, yard and garden waste, but we treat it as just a bonus. Great for adding to a seed-starting mix once it's screened. But it's not nearly enough to rely on to sustain more than a bed or some containers at best. On a commercial scale or if you have a *bunch* of chickens/rabbits or something that add manure, then yeah it starts to make sense as a primary focus.

@@sircorkysriley4904 Funny you should ask. Last year (2020) I tried no-till for the first time for my corn patch and had the healthiest corn I've ever grown. I didn't till the soil. I simply laid down one inch of compost on top of the soil, and transplanted the corn plants into the untilled soil. BUT I spread 1 cup of organic fertilizer in a 28-inch line on top of the soil where the corn row will be, and worked it into the top 2 inches or so of the soil with my gloved fingers. I transplant my corn seedlings 7 inches apart, so that works out to 1/4 cup organic fertilizer per plant. I use "Kellogg 'Organic Plus' Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer" from Home Depot. *BUT* this year I'm going to experiment. This year half my rows of corn will include the Kellogg fertilizer and half will not. I want to see if the alfalfa/leaf combination alone will be enough to keep the corn plants healthy for the entire season.

I can totally relate. Sometimes when the winter blues set in, I find that going to a nursery and just being around that green growth does help a little bit. Of course it does take some restraint to keep from walking out with an armload of stuff that I don't have room for!

I just come across your video about using alfalfa pellets for the garden I am very impressed. I think I'm going to put it in a blender and then spread it in my planting holes for tomatoes and peppers and such that way they will get the nutrients right away I'm thinking. Thank you 😊 God bless you and your family 🙏❣️🤗🐕🐾🐾🐈🐾

Good to know. I compost rabbit droppings along with their uneaten and dropped hay pellets. The compost gets mixed into the garden beds every time I prepare my beds. But knowing I can use the pellets as a fertilizer will be a good new addition to my beds.

Excellent choice! I run alfalfa pellets through my worm bins as 'chow' and intend to add additoinal pellets to the garden (as well as vermicompost) in the spring. Great amendment and a much more inexpensive alternative to higher priced fertilizers.

For the people concerned about pellets contaminated with pesticide residue I would think feeding his worms this would kill them instead of multiplying them. Guess it can also depend on which Farm the products came from and how they were cared for
