How to use a WIDE ANGLE lens!

Today’s video location What3words pies.talent.depend
As part of my experimental prime lens challenge for 2024, this video explores how you can best use a 16mm lens for landscape photography.
Mads' video that got me thinking about when to use a wide angle lens.

The gear I use to make my content (although this is always changing!)
Sony A7iv + 20mm 1.8G - My main KZread camera for shooting out on location.
Canon EOS R8 + 16mm F2.8 + Zhuyin Crane M3 - I use this for a combination of stills and video B-roll
DJI Pocket 3 - Used for videos where I cover a lot of ground
Sony A7iii - this is my primary stills camera that works with native Sony lenses and all my Canon EF lenses on the Sigma MC-11 adaptor
Canon 5D3 - I use this camera when I use my EF glass and there is no benefit in adapting
DJI Mavic Pro 2 - My first drone, and I can’t see me replacing it. It’s amazing for both stills and video
Go Pro Hero 8 - for adverse weather conditions that my other cameras might not survive!
Insta360 - X3 & One inch edition - for 360 degree video and BTS content
Microphones - DJI Wireless Mic, Rode Wireless Go, Rode Lav Go, Rode Video Pro+, Rode Video Micro
Photo Tripods - Sirui ST-124 with Sirui ballhead, iFootage Gazelle
Video Tripods - Benro + spikes, Switchpod, Freewell real travel tripod
Monopod - Sirui P-325FL
Camera bags - Manfrotto, Lowepro, Peak Design, K&F and Crumpler
Photo Filters - Nisi V7 + Nisi filters, H&Y magnetic filter system
Video filters - Freewell magnetic NDs, H&Y Revoring, Hoya Variable ND
All of my cameras have Arca Swiss plates to connect with the Peak Design Capture Clip and compatible tripods.
Video editing software - Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro
Video editing on the iPad Pro - LumaFusion
Photo editing - Adobe Lightroom, photoshop, Artisan Pro X, Silver Efex, Color Efex

Great shots Ben, and tricky focal length too. I love wides, but closer to 20... Nicely done!

Cheers Gordon, as you know I love my primes and my 16mm gets plenty of use; but mainly for video. I thought I would put it to good use for stills in this video, and it was really good fun. I was going to skip 20mm in my prime challenge and go straight to 24mm, but you think I should include this?

Thank you Clark, I was committed to shooting wide that morning, but I think I got lucky with the conditions also. The reflections in the sand were just perfect!

One lens is a great way to really think about composition. Great presentation as always Ben! Bad weather perhaps we should all club together and send you storm chasing in tornado alley 😳 i know a guy who knows a guy 😊

Thank you Steve, I am enjoying this prime challenge series. I would love to go proper storm chasing, with a pro that knows what they are doing. In the mean-time I will just head out between teh rain and call is storm chasing :-)

It’s great fun isn’t it, and I am pretty sure I came away with better images for it. No distractions thinking about which lens I would shoot with. 16mm, done!

Hello, providing the settings was something that I used to do, but in all honesty the settings were pretty much the same in all of the videos. I am always aiming to use an aperture between F8 & f11, for the best optical performance and depth of field (more of the scene in focus), iso 100 (if on a tripod or subject isn’t moving) and the shutter speed is whatever based upon the light levels.

Nice shots, Ben! I have the same lens for one year but I barely use it. I feel like I have to fix it soon :D

Hi Ben wow I can relate so much to that video. When I first started shooting Landscapes I bought the excellent Sigma 10-24mm for my crop sensor Nikon and shot everything at 10mm because I could 😅 fast forward to today I'm now shooting Fuji but my go-to lens is the 16-55mm or (24-70mm equivalent FF) I do actually miss shooting wider now so bought the very big and heavy Fuji 8-16mm 😮 now that's a very challenging lens to shoot at 8mm (12mm FF) it's great for look up architecture but for landscapes very difficult. I'd love to see you out with a 12mm lens to see what you can get. Maybe contact Sony wink unless you already own a lens that wide. Forgive me if you have released a video like that. As I mentioned in a previous comment I'm a bit behind on watching your vlogs

Hello, I don’t actually own a lens wider than 16mm. I have used a Sony 12-24mm and made a video about shooting astro with it, but because it was full frame it had a large projecting element on it, doesn’t accept filters and it was about £2000; so it is not for me. I tend to shy away from shooting architecture really wide also, because i shoot a lot of commercial architecture and I find 24mm a bit more tasteful and only resort to my 16-35 at the wider end if I am shooting a small space like a bathroom/ensuite or I deliberately want a distorted ‘wow’ type image. I was actually offered to review the Laowa 10mm full frame lens, but I declined as I had too much on my plate at the time. 10mm on full frame must be mad!

Hi Gary, yes I have no problem doing so, but the settings were changing according to the light levels and whether I was going for a long exposure. For starters this lens has such a small lens thread that camera companies don’t cater for long exposure filters for them, so I have a ND64 filter that is a 6 stop filters to create shutters speeds of around 5-10 seconds in the right light. I aim to shoot between F8-F11 most of the time, but when I was shooting into the sun to get the sun stars I would stop it down to F16. If my camera is on a tripod and there is no wind or waves are not crashing at the tripod legs (risk of shake) then I would use ISO 100. The shutter speed would therefore be whatever required to get a ‘correct’ exposure. If I shoot handheld then I would aim to get a minimum shutter speed of 1/30th second. I shoot in raw and auto white balance when shooting out doors. I hope that this is helpful!

This happens, we see someone’s work and get inspired, use the gear that they use etc; but using a wide angle lens requires the right locations and subjects. I hope this video made you consider how to use a wide angle lens in the right environment.

Cheers Jim. Imagine if they made zoom tilt shift lenses….I will probably be shooting with the 24mm tilt shift lens for London. Again it simplifies things by not switching lenses etc and less to carry. Famous last words, but I intend on packing light!

Prime lenses are great, you can't just stand there and take a photo like you sometimes can with zoom lenses. It's mentally visualising the shot, and then trying to find the spot that gives you that shot with the prime lens that makes it enjoyable. I suppose it cuts out the dithering.

I absolutely agree, prime lenses make you work harder, but equally I find it more liberating and fun at the same time. I just accepted the fact that I could get the shot of the moon over the pier and moved on!

Terrific images.. Very interesting, but #1 in the series? Didn't you already do a long-lens video or did I dream that? So nice of the clouds to show up and help you out with those scenes! Very good job keeping the verticals vertical. I love the portrait images with the sun stars. Seems to me verticals at 16mm would be even more challenging. I just ordered a used 7-14 F2.8 MFT lens, looking forward to some ultra-wide experimentation!

Hi Brian, well spotted. I actually filmed this video before my 100mm video, but because Bluebells are seasonal I pushed that video up the order of release! You win most observant viewer :-) Enjoy the new wide any lens, like I said check out some of Mad’s videos as he goes into a lot of details what these lenses are best for. He actually just published another video on the topic. It’s all about finding those layers in the foreground, mid ground and background!
