How to use a TDS/EC meter, and how to convert

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show how to use a TDS/EC meter. I also explain the different scales used around the world, 500, 640 and 700 being the most common. By using the EC (electrical conductivity) setting you can multiply the millisiemens by the particular scale you use. There are 1,000 microsiemens in a millisiemen. For instance if your EC reading is 1440 microsiemens (1.44 millisiemens) and you wish to convert to European 700, it is 1.44 x 700 = 1008 ppm. Using the US 500 scale it is 1.44 x 500 = 720 ppm.

@@growNglow Yeah it's real confusing, TDS is the same as PPM? Or is it EC?

  • @growNglow

EC is the electrical conductivity of the liquid, and that is where the numbers derive from

@@growNglow I read that EC is the base value from which the others (TDS and PPM) are measured (or calculated?). Can you confirm that? Would it hence be best to focus mainly on EC? Thanks Pascal and good weekend.

@@nikolasmaes99 Yes. The meter sends a current from one probe to the other, and electrical measures conductivity (EC)

Are there any inexpensive ones that have temp compensation? Without temp compensation they are pretty bad going all over the place in readings.

  • @growNglow

I doubt it. If 100% accuracy is required you can make the compensation adjustment manually. Most are calibrated at 25C

For hydroponics, 25C is near perfect in many applications. We use cooling to get it down to 24C or 25C, as the water is naturally over 30C because of the heat

@@growNglow I am so lost. Meters came and I popped out my tomato to test its water and rock steady at 30c and 0186 us/cm I am stumped what all that means or where it should be. edit: From what I was able to gleam from the net I should be around 2-5 millisiemens which is 2000-5000 microsiemens. I added a lot more nutrients and each one is now around 2000-2100 on my meter.

Why my TDS tester show 9999 when I test my hydroponic nutrients in water. I just newly brought the tester. Is it I premix the nutrients and left there for too long

I am not sure what you mean. This item is from US and the TDS scale is 'scale 500'. You do not need to calculate anything. You can change from EC to TDS with the button.
