Glad I watched the video. When I first got mine, it was still mentioned that you shouldn't use the discharge water to feed the system and now apparently you can. This will certainly help reduce my water use now that I know it's okay to use the discharge water.

What I've found works well is use an auto-siphon to transfer the water from the drain bucket back into the water supply bucket as needed.

SCL works great but I worried about water waste, so I've come up with this and it works well... 4:1 ice to water in the supply bucket and recirculate. When ice melts and supply water eventually heats up, pour off most of the water leaving pump submerged, and replenish ice. I go through ~1 22lb bag of ice + 5 gal (or less) water during a 1 hour moderate rolling boil. If you need to boil longer or more vigorously, just plan to go through more ice. I use a temp probe with an alarm in the supply water to alert me when it reaches ~100F and needs attention. 👍🍺

Am I wrong in thinking that this doesn't completely eliminate the need for a hood? If I have to wait until after hot break, that's 15 minutes into a boil.

You do not need a hood. The hot break should happen before actually hitting boil temps.
