I'm putting a handle on a machete an older one from like the 40s and 50s and it's got rivets on it that are binding the handle to the blade I was wondering what the name of those would be called so I can look up what I've got to get to properly put the handle back together I'd greatly appreciate if anyone could help me out thanks

How do you base the length of the rivet to the thickness of the materials to be joined together ?

Would like to understand that too! If I have two 2mm thick sheets to be rivetted together, how do I define the size I need? Also does it make a difference for Rivnuts?

The way i'm understanding it based on another reply the uploader posted. the length of the rivet is longer than what is written on product packaging. the length written is actually the grip length which is the exact thickness of the 2 parts you're joining together. so your problem can be fixed with a 4mm rivet.

Any suggestion on how to measure a rivet that is installed and will have to drilled to remove? I am trying to determine the size of rivets I need for my fishing boat.

Unfortunately, we don't know of any way to measure a rivet that's already installed. To know what size rivet you need, you'll need to measure the hole and thickness of material.

So your saying a rivet is not measured by the distance from the hat to the end unless it's measured by a rivet measuring tool that measures the distance from the hat to the end?

You do realise that you are contradicting yourself with this answer ? When you measured with the rivet measuring tool you measured the same distance that you told us was not to be taken as the measure of the rivet !!!

@@regwatson2017 I'm guessing the tool is just the key to tell you which rivet it is. The rivet would compress to a specified length given by the key. It obviously compresses to a length shorter than it's original state.

I'm just trying to join two pieces of flashing, less that 1/16 of an inch total thickness when the two pieces will be joined. Will a rivet with a 1/8 inch grip work for that? Will it compress enough to hold the two pieces together?

  • @AlbanyCountyFasteners

A 1/8" grip rivet could work, but it might be better to get a rivet with a closer grip range. We actually have some pop rivets with a 1/16" grip which may work for your application. They are 4-1 (1/8" x 1/16") stainless pop rivets and can be found here: www.albanycountyfasteners.com/POP-Rivets-1-8-304-Stainless-Steel-p/11930000.htm

I have factory crimped aluminum roofing on a travel trailer which I imagine is 4 thicknesses of metal when crimped (maybe 1/8 of an inch when crimped originally) Water damage/frost wedging has split the crimp apart and when opened the pieces are open to maybe 1/4 to as much as 1/2 inch.. Can a rivet Pull the layers together then crimp them tight? Do I need a tool that i can put through a drilled hole that will pull the pieces together tightly and then place a pop rivet to hold it together? Hope the question makes sense.

No the rivet brings the martials together tight as you squeezy the handle.

what length and diameter of rivet should i use if i want to join 2 sheets of aluminium sheet which is 2mm in thickness i.e 2+2 = 4mm in total?

  • @AlbanyCountyFasteners

You would probably be looking for a 3-3 sized rivet, which is listed as having a 3.2-4.8mm grip range and 2.4mm diameter. For joining sheets of aluminum, make sure you're using an aluminum rivet.

If I need additional rivets of the size I am now using and do not know the length, how do I state the length. In other words, what part of the rivet is included in the length?

OK I sent off and got one of those little red rivet guys just like the one you showed. (Very nice guide, very thick plastic-should last a long time!). But I’m still not clear. I have a ribbon here that measures to be a #5 by the diameter hole and in the slot it’s a 44 in the slot. OK, what does that mean? (it’s actually between the 44 in the 46th so I guess it’s a 45 in the slot). I’m assuming you measure to the end of the sleeve and not to the bottom of the ball as you pointed out. How does that translate to the thickness of material for which can be used?

OK I did a short research and turns out using the rivet gauge is very simple: The gauge allows you to determine a two digit code for the rivet this code is referred to as the trade number and simply: the first digit is the rivet diameter expressed in 32nds of an inch and the second number is the maximum grip length expressed in 1/16ths of an inch. So, for example a ‘trade number’ of 86 means the rivet diameter is 8/32” (= 1/4”) and max grip length is 6/16” (= 3/8”).

I have tried every online retailer to get one of those rivet measuring tools you showed on your video, EBay, Amazon, b& q, and a score more. Does being in uk make a difference. I purchased a rivet gun that came with small amount of 4 various sized rivets but the largest wasn't long enough to go right through to the back of what I'm trying to join. I have watched this video several times but i am still none the wiser, you spent too much time repeating about the length of the rivet not to the very tip. Where can I get hold of a template same as the one you used. I am in uk and run out of sites to search. I am disabled and can't go out to buy anything so I must be Amazon's best customer.

michael sullivan perhaps Michael you have access to vernier callipers , take the diameter measurement of the rivet head above the cap this will be your drill size try and get as close as you can to that diameter hopefully leaving a friction fit for placing your rivet, take the combined thickness measurement of your material you are wanting to join then take your calipers and take a measurement of your rivets above the cap length needing about 1/4” longer then your material combined thickness you should be able to squeeze the rivet tight enough. If you call a shop for rivets needed I am sure with the combined material thickness given, the diameter of hole , and the type of material you are joining they will be able to help you. Type of material is important as two different types of metal can be effected such as aluminum rivets and stainless sheeting oxidizing/ corrosion. Good luck Michael cheers
