How to use a Oxygen/Acetylene Torch-DIY Duke

Last week I used this Oxygen/Acetylene torch to cut some steel for the Power Rack addition. This week I thought I should show you exactly how it works. Thanks for watching!

    I am so ready to start welding and cutting! My dad had an acetylene oxygen torch and I've been wanting to learn how to weld! I'm inspired!

    rare seeing a lady into this,why are you interested in this Angie? hobby or employment? you said your dad had a torch,,do you no longer have it and what about the cylinders?

    @@ARCSTREAMS He has it all. O2 acetylene, stick, wire. Right now he's making me watch. He gave me a wire welder but I have to fix it! I'm still getting familiar with torches and how to handle hot metal(without burning myself). Right now I have a baby butane torch I'm using to heat and bend stainless steel forks and spoons. Eventually I'll tac them all together! Hobby...maybe a career? I haven't really decided.

    Thanks for this tutorial. Just picked up a "hobbyist" OxyAcetylene setup (small tanks) and am getting the hang of how to do this again. Haven't used a torch in more than 25 years. Your video helped to bring it all back. Good job.

    Hey Duke, cool video on the Acetylene torch. As an enthusiast you might enjoy checking out a propane/oxygen surface mix torch. It won't get hot enough for metal but its whisper quiet. It's what I use for glass.

    Like your vids man. Just picked up a victor cutskill rig with tanks about the size of the ones you have. Haven't lit an oxyfuel torch in about ten years and trying to re educate myself by watching some videos. Yours is one of the most clear and concise ones I've found. Oh, and I dig your big truck repair vids too. Those are interesting!

    Cool..... You just taught me that I don't have my regulators cranked up near enough because of my money tightness and fear of emptying out the bottles in 10 minutes..... Today, I'm cranking it up Acetylene 10 Ox 30-35 .... I'm removing 200 feet of old ugly jimbobbed fencing.... Looks like with the correct setting I should be able to bring it to its knees in an hour!!! Hopefully I don't have to go swap out my bottles. ( $65 refill..... The intial purchase of both $560 was a real hemorrhoid creator) Thanks man!!!

    Couple safety concerns. First, you need to put on those goggles as soon as you get the flame going, not just when you are cutting, or you're going to eventually damage your eyes. This video's main problem, however, is that you REALLY need to stress the importance of backing out your regulator valves BEFORE you open the tanks. Then once you open the tanks, slowly screw the regulators in to allow the gas into the hose. If they aren't backed out when you open the tanks, the rapid increase in pressure can cause a blowout of the regulator, which is a VERY serious danger considering the pressures held in those tanks. You also need to stand away from the front of the regulators as you do this in case a blowout does happen, because if it does, if you are in the path, it will send metal straight through your chest and easily kill you. This is not as rare an occurrence as you would think. On that note, you may want to mention the importance of flashback arrestors as well. This is a very useful tool to have but it is also by far the most dangerous tool you will ever have in your shop, and it needs to be respected. Anyone using it needs to be made aware of the dangers and potential consequences of not following safety protocol.

    If you get a burn back you should turn off fuel first, so if you just train that way its natural when you may panic.

    your acetylene pressure is way to high. with 9 psi of acetylene and 60 psi of oxygen you can cut though 18 inchers of steel. the oxygen does not blow away the molton metal it oxidizes it, that is why you can not cut though rusty metal, as it has already been oxidized. you should never light your torch by turning on acetylene first, use a little bit of oxy and acetylene, the soot is toxic and its against safety laws.

    you've probably never worked on a farm Derek or a salvage yard. that pressure works great and it does blow the slag out and I cut rusty steel all the time, fact the steel I'm cutting is rusty. Far as lighting the acetylene first, that's how it's done, it's not a college class out here. it's the real world. But thanks for your critique anyway.

    +DIY Duke i worked in a shipyard for 20 years as a time served oxy, acet cutter {burner here in the uk i now own two salage yards which i have built up on my own. please do your home work about cutting rusty metal. if you turn your pressures down your bottle will last a lot longer with the same results

  • @diyduke

    @diyduke

    The pressure Derek as demonstrated in the video was the levels we use all the time and the oxygen was not at sixty, if you remember I showed how you can adjust the regulators. If you had 60 psi of oxygen and 9 psi of acytelene you'll blow your acytelene right out. I'm not going to put a video out of this nature without following approved steps for igniting fuel gas and when it comes to acytelene a producer of oxy-fuel equipment (Smith Equipment) clearly states in the procedure for igniting acytelene, "Step 1. Purge the hoses. Step 2. Open the fuel gas valve 1/8 of a turn and ignite the gas using an approved friction spark lighter. Step 3. Open the oxygen valve until you achieve a neutral flame." Now in your salvage yard you may have your torch set up with the oxy mix dialed in for cutting same thicknesses. That doesn't apply here. Now I'm not being a smart ass and don't take it wrong but I'm been doing this kind of stuff since I was 17. I'm 58 now so it's not my first rodeo. It's been working fine for 41 years. I don't just do one thing around here like a salvage yard, I put things back together, hell I even cut rusty steel, even weld rusty steel. I'm sure you have your own methods, good deal, why not show the world and make a video I would love to watch a salvage yard in England, think it would be very interesting.

    9 acyt and 60 oxy? lol clearly tells me you don't know what you are talking about since that will never keep a flame and blow out and you are wrong about the rust ,oxy not only oxidizes but blows the slag away at the same time and that piece must be rusty all the way through for it to give you problems and not cut otherwise the heat brings the metal underneath to kindling temps and the oxy blows through the layer of rust and keeps oxidizing,iron oxide is not that high of a melting temp and its not fully oxidized(ie complete combustion) so plenty of fuel left in it to be burned by the oxy ,and lastly " the soot is toxic and its against safety laws." where did you read that from? you saying sooth is against the law or the lighting sequence? you always light the fuel first because otherwise you risk creating a burnback or a flashback(sustained burnback) in the torch and possibly the lines with the higher oxy pressure either resulting in creating an explosive mix in your torch body or flame back in your lines,that is where the danger is,,,now i do not necessarily agree with how he shuts the acyt first,personally i shut the oxy off first to avoid that blow back explosion and it reminds you that there is still a flame on to be shut for safety reasons as some ppl forget the oxy is still on once they no longer see a flame if they shut the acyt first
