Do I have to use almond oil? I usually use IPM for greasing the molds.

Any emollient should actually work, we chose almond because is pretty stable to rancidity plus it's a natural oil.

Typically, the lipsticks are heated to about 150F/65C

I'm using a plastic mold and whenever I take my lipsticks out of there there are lots of small defects in the lipstick, like little scratches and things. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the mold, would it be better to try using an aluminum mold instead of a plastic one? Alternatively it could be an issue with the lipstick base or perhaps I'm not greasing the mold enough? Also, when I take my lipsticks out they are shinny in some areas but not shinny in other areas

Often lipsticks are “flamed” to slightly melt the surface to create an even and shiny surface. The lipsticks in a metal mold will look more uniform, and ours has the slant tip which looks professional. Try greasing the mold evenly. Flaming the final lipstick may help distribute the gloss as well. If the surface is very uneven, the proportions of the waxes could be off, air in the mixture, or inconsistent pouring.

I only looked that up to see how the hole in the middle before demolding the lipstick is made but never found out 🤦🏻‍♂️

🫣Teflon sheds microplastics and PFAS, which is probably the plastic taste.

We have no info about TBK's lipstick bases. So, they may contain more waxes and may be stickier than other bases.
