It would help if either of these were meant for that; they aren’t. Go look at a Glycine Airman GMT, or that new Seiko 5 GMT. You set the gmt hand to UTC (Greenwich is not universal time anymore, and hasn’t been for many years). You set the hour hand to your local time, and you set the bezel insert to local destination time. Presto: three time zones, or, more to the point, Zulu + 2. If you don’t use UTC, or don’t understand it, you don’t really need a triple timer.

Look, if we're being honest the correct way to use a GMT is however you want. Having the GMT hand set to local time is useful as a reference to the 24h clock (like the explorer II shown in the video) if you don't care about tracking more than one time zone. My preference is having the GMT hand set to GMT time, the bezel set to 'home' time and the normal hands to local time. That obviously changes if the watch doesn't have the moving bezel, so there's strictly speaking no 'correct' way of using one. Glad it made more sense for you thanks to this video.

Hi, good tutorial. But the Rolex GMT Master II can have the date set in either direction. As per the Rolex GMT Master II manual ‘Set the date by turning the crown in either direction’.

Digging the classic repertory. Fun story, I took the Explorer II 15670 to the Rolex official master watchmaker and he not only set the date back and forth, he did it with the watch set exactly at midnight. He had such confident in the movement I almost tried it (but didn’t). I suppose if it broke he could fix it.

@@watchound.bernardo9738 So the 16570 didn't have the independent hour hand? Because the 24 hour/GMT hand doesn't change the date so it can be anywhere. And the date can only be changed by the normal hour hand and of course - changes at midnight....🤔
@watchound.bernardo9738

@@koolpep that’s it, hadn’t considered the obvious, if the date is set by the hour hand (as the 16570 is) the other hands (minutes and GMT) can set at exactly midnight, there is no “danger zone” to set the date.

Hey Oisín, great video as always. One point, regarding setting the date, you can move the hour hand in either direction to set the date. The functionality has to consider passing the date line either direction. Don’t know if this is true on all GMTs, but it’s true for my Tudor and my Batman.
Жыл бұрын
It’s likely you’re damaging your Batman doing that. Not sure about the batgirl but I’m friend with a technician here who services them and told me not to go backwards. The new tudor BB pro actually boasts having a retrograde date like it’s some big deal so it’s unlikely other tudors allow it.

@ Hey, I checked with the Service department manager at my AD. He says for the latest models of the Tudor BBGMT and the Rolex GMT Master II, absolutely either direction. He said it might not be ok for the “caller” GMTs, but it should work for any “true” GMT. He also said that if you try to go backwards and the date doesn’t change back, then obviously it wasn’t designed for retrograde setting (and hopefully you didn’t just damage the watch). I like the idea of the GMT function and having one in the collection but I never set or use it. If I travel and I know my destination is 4 hours ahead of my home time I just set the watch to the proper time of my destination when I get there. Glancing at the watch I can subtract 4 hours in my head in maybe .5 seconds so a GMT, while fun to play with just like a chronograph, is rather useless.
@williamumbach592 Жыл бұрын
For me, if you have a nice “Time Piece”, make the effort to set it “Exactly”. I only “Hack” the watch when the Seconds hand is at 12 o’clock position. Your phone or iPad or computer will have a clock that displays time to the second. Set and leave your watch hacked to the next minute displayed on your phone, when the phone turns to the next minute, push in your crown and you are now synced exactly. My OCD gift to you. I will never own a watch that has a Seconds hand if I can’t “Hack” it and set it to the exact second. (I know some fine watches that don’t have a Hacking feature can be set exactly with some reverse pressure on the crown rotation)

Really helpful Oisin. I’ve been to setting the date anti-clockwise on my 126710 BLNR if it was quicker to get the desired date. Just checked and it’s fine to do on the 3285 movement, thank god haha
You can also wind the crown in reverse direction on the Tudor GMT to go backwards on the date
Cool video. A lot of people have no clue about how to set a watch like that.
Thanks for the video. I just got my first GMT (BB Pro) and was freaking confused.
Excellently executed video, Oisin!!
Loving the channel and its vibe
Awesome video. Great tutorial. Thanks!
Excellent description 💪🏽
I saw a 6542 yesterday. My god it was beautiful. I’m visiting my AD quite often to check for my Pepsi 😎
Hi Oisin .... I've had my GMT Master since 1976 and I find it easier to leave the watch on GMT(Zulu) time and move the bezel in relation to what time zone I'm in and read local time on the 24 hour hand . Great video thanks .....
great tutorial, thank you for the clear explanation!
Best GMT COMPLICATION EXPLANATION 🍻🙌🏻👍🏻
I think you can go backwards on the date with Rolex GMTs. Has never been a problem for me and it makes sense if you are traveling at night and it’s a different day when you land.
Not a lot of people know that 😎nice little video Oisin. I feel another masterpiece coming 👏👏
Well done. Thank you -
Thank you for this.
Good explanation. Would have been nice to also see how to use the "caller" GMT. Since these watches are usually cheaper than "flyer" GMTs, they could be more common among people who are starting on their watch journey.

Both Rolex and Tudor movements allow you to set it backwards and forwards, it's in their manual. So no danger at all.

@@koolpep that I do all the time, I meant changing the date with the watch set at midnight.

@@watchound.bernardo9738 So the 16570 didn't have the independent hour hand? Because the 24 hour/GMT hand doesn't change the date so it can be anywhere. And the date can only be changed by the normal hour hand and of course - changes at midnight....🤔
@watchound.bernardo9738

@@koolpep that’s it, hadn’t considered the obvious, if the date is set by the hour hand (as the 16570 is) the other hands (minutes and GMT) can set at exactly midnight, there is no “danger zone” to set the date.
Very handy, I haven't "de-stickered" my BB pro as yet (can you do a taking a link out video next) 😁😄
Best video you have done👍👍
Also with the hour hand at the sun wherever the gmt hand is at equals true north but but need to be set at Greenwich mean time. 3 time zones & a compass.
Cool vid! Nice
Quite a complicated, simple, complication!! 😉👍👍
BB GMT also allows you to change date backwards using jumping hour hand.
I was going to ask if you could do a GMT tutorial. Thanks 😊
Great with learning vids!
Thanks buddy, I wa salways wondering how to track that third time zone,
👍perfect, thank you
The GMT complication is interesting, but I don't live the life style. I have the Hong Kong version of the Batman. Its fun, but it's not a true GMT. But great info. Thanks!
Good tip
Hey Oisín, great video as always. One point, regarding setting the date, you can move the hour hand in either direction to set the date. The functionality has to consider passing the date line either direction. Don’t know if this is true on all GMTs, but it’s true for my Tudor and my Batman.
Жыл бұрын
It’s likely you’re damaging your Batman doing that. Not sure about the batgirl but I’m friend with a technician here who services them and told me not to go backwards. The new tudor BB pro actually boasts having a retrograde date like it’s some big deal so it’s unlikely other tudors allow it.

You’re scaring me man! I’d never profess to know more than your technician, but I went back and checked the manuals. They each say “in either direction.” Still, I’m going to check with my tech, just to be sure.

Love your work, keep it coming!

@ The manual of the BB GMT says it's fine to move forward and backward - I have one of their fiurst ones.
Oh, take me back to the days when airlines treated you well!
You have forgotten to say, that the first Explorer 2 hasn’t the second time zone, 12h and 24h was fixed together because it was made for cave explorers ✌️😎👍
Next one: how to close - and open! - your watch bracelet.
Want a cigar video now for beginners haha

Great video...not a big deal...but you were talking a little faster than normal (and in the previous video also)...prefer your normal, slower pace of speaking...thanks for all your work!
Clever, innit?
Next, size a pin and collar link
