    Thanks for the video. I saw this video and got the courage to buy 16 gb RAM and went on to put it to my new 2020 27' iMac (5k) computer myself. It originally came with a total of 8 gb of RAM, the two 4 gb RAM units were placed in slots B and D. The computer turn very slow after I downloaded my music and photos. After adding the 16 gb of RAM units, the computer is now working great. I found that new 8 gb RAM units should be placed in slots B and D and the 4 gb units should be in the slots A and C. If the 8 gb units are placed in slots A and B and the 4 gb units are placed in slots C and D, the computer shows that it only has 16 bb of RAM, not 24 gb it should show. placed

    Yes, it matters. According to the Apple site, the first 2 slots should be as close as possible to the capacity of the last 2 slots. So in your case it would have to be something like 8GB | 32 GB | 8GB | 32GB. At least that's my understanding.

    @@guillettoaparicio13 The Imac came with two RAMs of 4gb each, he bought two more, but of 8gb each, he didn't use the four RAMs together because the performance would suffer a loss, as the RAMs need to operate in synchronicity. Even if the RAMs were the same frequency, their voltage and controllers are, most likely, not. That's why most people end up using the same size, brand, frequency for certain parts of the PC... Small details like these end up making a difference in the hardware world.

    Why not add 2 modules instead of replacing? Do all 4 modules need to be the same size?

  • @EdwinvandenAkker

    @EdwinvandenAkker

    You should be able to add the memory instead of replacing. At least, that's what I hear all over the place. If you order 32 GB of ram, the total of ram will be 40 GB, is what other videos say. But, I remember one video, that talked about the order. I think the lower (2x 4GB) should be in the lower slots. The higher capacity rams should be in the top. If I remember right, it has something to do with the speed. Just check the "About this Mac" menu, and look for the clockspeed of the memory modules. They should be 2666 Mhz for the 2020 macs. If it is lower, change the order of the ram modules and see if it changes the speed.

    🦉 I recently installed 2 x 8GB sticks in an iMac 27" Late 2013 model. It was cheap as. You can download this app to scan your system & it'll tell you which of their RAM is compatible, then search Amazon, eBay or StaticICE for the best price. www.crucial.com/store/systemscanner The original pair is still in there for a total system RAM of 24GB. I moved them up a slot so that the new RAM gets used instead. I don't even recognise the brand Apple used. It was made in Korea. But Kingston or Crucial should be safe choices. Ground yourself & eliminate static electricity by touching a metal tap before handling RAM. There also seems to be a bit of confusion how to pair modules to make the most of dual channel speed: www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/223429/How+to+couple+RAM+Modules+in+iMac+27
