    I'm confused. If Katadyn says that running the filter horizontally under a kitchen tap can damage the filter, then shaking it like you suggested in Step 2, or even just hiking with it and having water sloshing around in the bottle is far more violent.

    I forgot about #7 (soak before using) before my 2nd hike with it and was surprised when I got hardly any flow of water after filling the bottle. I left the water in and tried again 20 minutes later and it worked fine.

    Citric acid powder also works instead of vinegar. Much easier to store and use. I typically backflush with water + tiny bit if bleach or aquamira (chlorine dioxide). Dry completely before storage

    i done this with my sawyer squeeze( and yes i used filtered hot water) it improved the flow, but then shorlty after i toook it on my trip and the thing water just barely dripped bit and i tried several times during 3 days! i had little better experince with mini, what is the problem? i m giving up .. katadyn be free as i understand works with similar technology and suffers from the same problem.

    Thanks so much for this! I thought my filter was completely dead, but it was a combination of clogged and not reactivated after storage. I tried the ättika trick and compared pushing 200ml Gothenburg tap water through it before (32s) and after resting overnight (10s!)

    Good tips! Portable device to convert salt water into fresh water: Your cook kit with folding cup and lid as below. You will have to build a still: 1) Float a the cup in your pot of salt water. 2) Cover the pot with an inverted lid that dips down slightly in the middle. (If necessary, make a slightly conical lid from the sheet of aluminum foil that you carry for just such an emergency.) 3) Boil the salt water. If it works correctly, water vapor will condense on the lid and drip into the collection cup. This will require a lot of fuel if you do it over a stove. Since you're probably on a beach (to get the salt water), build a safe wood fire in the sand. Keep your dirty water bag full and nearby in case you need to douse the fire.

    @@roberthammenrudh Here's a good vid on how to build a packable still that uses your metal water bottle as a steam reservoir. It is reasonably light and compact and would work over a wood fire if you needed to desalinate a lot of water: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gohqxcypj926mNo.html

    I guess this guy has never heard of back flushing. Even without something like a Sawyer to do. It's simple. Fill your mouth with water. Plug the filter in your mouth. Blow. Simple. That'll flush most of the crap out of the pores. Then just do a clean push of water back from the filter end and you are good to go again as normal. Also never soak these kinds of filters in bleach or vinegar. That eats up the plastic and makes the filters weaker WRONG thing to ever ever ever do period.

  • @roberthammenrudh

    Back flushing is not recommended by Katadyn and the recommended procedure from Katadyn is similar to the one described in this video and will not harm your filter. If using Sawyer Squeeze on the other hand, back flushing is recommended and a plunger is also included in the purchase. Different products, different recommendations.

  • @KillerRaptorr

    @KillerRaptorr

    @@roberthammenrudhThey don't want you to do a full backflush because the product doesn't have any form of option to do so like Sawyer with the plunger. They don't want someone to grab a bag and tie it around the sip piece and squeeze water from that end. That would give to much pressure to the filter. But a small backflush with your own mouth will not give enough pressure to pop a fiber or harm it. And with the fibers being exposed on the dirty side. This makes it far easier to pull and do by far since it will allow the dirt to release from the pores easier then a confined closed cell unit like a Sawyer is that only has 1 end to escape from. Which is why they have a plunger style back flush system to put bit more pressure on the inner piece to force water out from the pores and flush it from the single entrance hole. Either that or Katadyn produce is far weaker then any company i seen. Even cheapo random companies i seen on amazon allow back flush and they use the same fibers as most 3rd party companies that aren't Sawyer or Lifestraw. So i highly dout a mouthful of water to lightly puff from the sipper would do anymore harm then what the filter does giving clean water to your sip point.

    @@roberthammenrudh four of them have clogged on me now. After one clogged on me at 5500 feet I am completely over it . Company knows about the problem but doesn’t do anything about it. You can put that thing in vinegar or bleach all night long. Actually, you can put it in for the rest of your life and it will not unclog. Something like this should never not work wayyyyyy too important. We’re talking about the most pristine Mountain Lakes. I’m not filtering mud puddles.
