How to Un-Stick the Motors On Your Talking Mother Goose
Some people have pointed out that my method is not a "true" repair. And as a matter of fact, they're right! This is just a quick fix to get the motors un-stuck. If you want your talking toy to be made good-as-new again, you'll need to send it to a professional repair person. They'll fix faulty wiring, completely overhaul the motors so they don't grind, and fix any thing no matter how small to get your toy perfect. So from now on, I'm going to make sure my videos clarify that my methods are only a temporary fix to get the motors working, nothing more. Sorry if there was any confusion!

I didn't even know what a mother goose was before today, I guess I'm too young (born in '98), but as a girl who loves to watch how things work, building, and putting apart things I am amazed by her! She's old, but still beautiful, I am really in love with her eyes. Very cute ❤ I can see why she is loved by so many. Thank you everyone that keep their childhood toys and delicate working parts in good shape. Makes me so happy to see. I wish I knew what happened to all my old toys. Hope they're ok.
Also, I just found this video because this morning I stumbled across a second generation Mother Goose at the op shop for $6.50. though her eye gears have seized, sounds a bit warbly (Tape, I hope) and one of her eyelashes had come unstuck (easy fix with some glue). I'm stoked! Thanks for the awesome video, might give this one a try for myself! ;-)
Very descriptive video at a very nice pace. Easy to follow. Thankyou for making this!!!
WoW, you covered absolutely everything... EVERYTHING!!! Extremely nice job! I made my last comment before I was half way done with the video because it was that good that I had to say something. Then I continued and your speed-ups and finishing tips were great!!! Thankyou again!!!
Hello! This is So Very Kind of you to make and share this video with everyone. ThankYou Very Much!!!!
Idk why but I love teddy ruxpin and mother goose
I found that the head shell can be split just enough to remove the servos without removing or breaking the eyes if you are careful. Getting them back in may be a little more fun, but I'm sure it can be done. Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas.
I think for somebody who doesn't have any forma training in this sort of thing (I'm assuming), you do a great job! I was really impressed!! :-) I can't believe your initiative to open her up & but her back together again! Hats off... :-P
we bought our nice this mother goose in 1987 for her 5th birthday ,still talk about it today😁
...Thank You for Posting this...great job...
@blueoctopede i tested the batteries, they're fine. Also used them in the other Mother Goose to make sure. I remember this happened when I repaired my 1st TMG, turns out one of the wires was being pinched...thanks for the tip, will buy freshies to be sure.
I do repair work on unique electronics. I have one in my shop now, what I have found is that the motor brushes get carboned up and will not turn correctly. Also they have a small potentiometer used to determine position of the motor this 'pot" will wear out and will no longer report the position of the mouth correctly. This is where I am at now trying to get a replacement part for this.
great video , for some of my plushes that have awful fur i have a suede brush with wire bristles dont go mad with it but justly gently brush the fur looks a lot better
@blueoctopede I just fixed my second Mother Goose, this time a Gen1. Thanks for the help!
Judy,TOYSTHATTALK restores them so they look new at a reasonable price. If you go to the website there is a phone number you can call. Betsy is restoring two of mine now. The one she sent me was beautiful!!!! Thank you bluoctopede for your wonderful helpful video. This has helped me a lot to understand the workings of my little geese,
One thing I learned while restoring Teddy's that may also hold true for MG, IF you use superglue do NOT get any on the fur and then touch it. Super glue and the fur has a massive reaction and it gets VERY hot and will burn you. I learned the hard way ;)
....Thank you so much for posting this....
@blueoctopede Thank you again! I just finished repairing/reconditioning my gen II Mother Goose, and now she looks a million bucks! Your video is really great, without it I'd be up $&%@!.
@Lachlant1984 This is the second. The first one I did was a head-turner, but I forgot to make a video, so I just decided to go ahead and do this one since she needed a *lot* more work to get cleaned up. And yes, the motor to turn the head is right next to the speaker! The blush is a dry power so it does have the potential to flake off if you touch it too much, but at the same time, if it's left on long enough and you don't accidentally rub on it, it will re-stain the fur a slightly lighter pink.
blueoctopede I love your videos

Loved your video! I wish there were videos out there for Mother Goose repair for replacing belts and servo motors. I haven't tinkered with my Mother Goose yet, but I plan on using this video to help me when I do! For me, it's not the eyes that are having issues, it is the mouth. It isn't moving at all and the tape sounds slow like a man's voice. I don't know if that means I need a new tape deck or just some cleaning? Should I do the same for the mouth as you did for the eyes? Thanks! :)
@monkey4182 You're so welcome!!! Mother Goose is a really fun project; what a find for six dollars!!
Your videos are amazing '!!!
Thanks for the video
nice job!!😀😀
How did you get the fur back on @blueoctopede ? I have a first gen and would like to get the motors un seized but I just wanted to make sure I have everything i need first. Was it sewn back together?
good job, blue octopede!!! 😀
@cranie4 WOW, thanks for the tip! I've already managed to superglue and solder myself, but never to the fur, thank goodness!
@blueoctopede it was $13, but they had 50% off! Thanks again.
@Nuggetlover96 Me either. She's going to get a new speaker soon as I can find one that's the correct wattage... For some reason it comes and goes with regular cassette cleanings, though, so I'm wondering if it's a problem with the drive belt being all wonky =\
@Lachlant1984 turns out it was the drive belt. The light always stayed on. Replacing it with a new one solved the problem straight away, only to reveal another problem... the lower beaks plastic fixing snapped from the face and its beak doesn't work properly from being loose... so, I am repairing that too.
Yep, that's really all you need to do. You don't even have to remove the battery compartment/cassette player or anything.
Hi. I'm having a problem with my second generation Mother Goose and would appreciate some advice, please. She got knocked over and fell about two feet. Nothing happens when I turn her on, though using a meter shows that ⠩⠑⠄⠎ getting power. I moved the tape player, hoping that all that was wrong was a loose connection. All the connections are fine. The only thing I found was a loose spring inside Mother Goose. It's a little less than an inch long and straight at one end. I'm wondering where it goes. Thank you for your time.
Awesome video. I still have my 2nd gen mother goose along with Hector as well. I've not turned them on for possibly around 20 years now. I've just had a baby girl so really want to start them up so she can have them as I did. I think I will have to send them to a professional though as Hector wasn't working at all when I last played them. Also, mother gooses eyelashes are unfortunately gone. Is it expensive to get professional to fix them up?

retrotoylover 2012 Thanks for the reply. I can have a go at fixing them; I'm just concerned I could make them worse. I've never done anything that technical before. But I definitely don't want to risk not having them sent back to me, I'd be gutted if that happened. Well, fingers crossed I can get them working again.

@@nothanks1239 we just found out a few minutes ago that my aunt is having a girl:D
i just found i believe a first edition with the moving head at goodwill for $8. i dont have any tapes for her but tried some other that i had and her sound is weird and she doesnt move at all. my question....does she have to have a tape specifically for her for her movement to work? or can any tape work?
@stephen12593
3 жыл бұрын
wanted to ask before following this tutorial on unsticking her motors
@blueoctopede
3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately she does have to have special tapes for the movement to work. The way it works is the World's of Wonder tapes have animation coding on one of the audio tracks, so if you try to play a normal cassette tape in her, nothing will happen. You can find the Mother Goose cassettes online with varying prices. They seem to be going for around $20-$25 at the moment on eBay (most have the book included). The weird sound is probably from the cassette player drive belt, which stretches and warps easily over time, or the pinch roller, which is also prone to denting. If she sounds like she's under water, those two are 99% likely the culprits.

BlueOctopede thank you 😊 she also has a broken jaw. how would i go about fixing that?
@GallaRM
3 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late but what I did for mine was I first got the fur around the head removed and the foam removed. Next I unscrewed the screws holding the faceplate on careful not to strip them. Then I removed the faceplate carefully. Then I removed the jaw and the broken piece (I pushed the metal rod holding it in out) Then I super glued the piece back on and left it sitting there for a couple of hours ( I'm using gorilla super glue) be careful not to get it on mother goose's fur though as I remember hearing it will melt that spot of the fur and heat it up. also be careful not to get it in the motors. After letting the glue dry for a couple of hours I positioned the jaw back on and pushed the metal rod back in carefully.
fixed the sound issue, it was one of the plugs that came loose... now to unstick her eyes.
@monkey4182 I actually think that sounds like an issue with the auto stop system, I think they use some kind of sensor that detects movement of the tape and when the tape stops moving it triggers the audio stop and turns off the motor and amplifier, I don't however know how to repair such a problem. Does the light come on when the tape stops, or does it go off?
Great video. Is there any hope of repairing a mother goose if both the eyes and the beak do not move? The tape plays well but nothing moves.
How many motors for her face does she have? I bought a mother goose tape on Ebay and it animates my TR but the lower jaw just kind of slowly animates. My theory is her mouth had one servo and a mechanism made both upper and lower jaw move at once.
@Lachlant1984 Yep, the audio from the video didn't turn out because I was too far away from the camera, so I re-dubbed it on the MacBook.
I've heard that one quick fix is to "massage" the motors while supplying power, either by moving the eyes/etc. while playing a tape or by directly powering the motor wires back and forth. I know the latter worked for seized motors on my Teddies. Any knowledge on those methods? My Goose just stopped turning her head.
I have a head turning mother goose and I am the original owner . I took it apart today and found the belts inside the servos were broken . Now I must find the belts for the servos . ANY HELP FOR ANYONE on finding these belts PLEASE
@van4195
5 ай бұрын
maybe try measuring them and looking up belts that are the same size
do you also have a 1st gen mother goose model? just asking. ;-)
@rebeltaz123 As far as I know, that's the only way to get the head apart. So sorry!!! If it's any consolation, I did manage to do it successfully with my Snoopy. I just drilled holes into the two pieces of plastic on the eyes when I was done and connected them together with a makeshift toothpick dowel.
Hey! This is a great tutorial, but my Mother Goose isn't working at all! It won't talk at all. Do you have any advice? I made sure to check the batteries, the cassette, etc.

Do you happen to know if the eyes can be removed without breaking the plastic pin holding them to the pressure roller? I have a couple of Mother Gooses (Geese?) that I need to rebuild the servos on, but I cannot get the head shell apart. ;-(

Derek Tombrello Did you figure it out? I need to do the same on mine and don’t want to ruin her.
@astromariopion Yep! The second generation's head is on a long post, and the motor is next to the speaker! There's only room for the two motors in her head- it's too small!
Omg I had one of these growing up!
@CeletialDarkness Omg yes!!! She was filthy; I think she'd had some kind of soda spilled on her... It had a funky smell and was VERY sticky D=
Hey! I was just wondering, do you have problems with the battery cover? My second gen’s battery cover bends a little whenever I have the batteries in and I was wondering if this could be one of the contributors to why she doesn’t work 😓 If not, thanks anyways :)
Little question. How do you reattach the head to the heck?
Is it really necessary to get ALL the fur and foam off? (unless you want to clean it) Can't you just expose MG's head and neck and then get at the motors that way?
@cranie4 Woah, that sounds really dangerous, did it give off any steam or smoke or a burning smell? Clearly the superglue has a chemical reaction with the fur, I don't know what the fur is made of.
very informative! it looked like you should have been wearing protective gloves when handling that dirty fur. lol!
@ENTMan98 Technically Alchemy II. Worlds of Wonder just marketed and put them on store shelves, if I'm understanding the way businesses work correctly.
Do you know if anyone has posted a video with a fix for hector, or a look at his insides? It would be interesting to see what he looks like, is all.
Has anyone had trouble getting the screws out of the tape deck? The top right screw on my goose seems like it was done up really tight compared to the others and my screwdriver stripped the head. Tried some different tricks like putting a rubberband over the screwdriver head but it still won't budge. Now I'm contemplating buying an extractor drill bit but really worried I'm gonna damage her using something like that.
i was born when u made this vid
@electronic4evr Interesting, I just assumed you insert and eject tapes from Mother Goose as you do with Teddy Ruxpin, and of course Teddy Ruxpin doesn't have an eject button, that said I think the Playskool version might, but I can't be sure of that.
What’s the difference between a 1st gen MG and a 2nd gen MG? And how can you tell the two apart? I just my first Mother Goose and I’m trying to figure out which gen she is. I can turn her head manually. Her motor is stuck at the moment so I’m not sure if her neck is broken or is suppose to turn. Could someone tell me how to figure out which gen she is?
@batter8178
4 жыл бұрын
If the battery cover comes off it's a genone and you need to massage the neck if it's a gen 2 it will have a hinged battery cover
@electronic4evr Yeah, sorry it took so long. My old laptop actually died during editing so I had to wait for the new one to get here before I could finish lol
@blueoctopede Pfffft, cleaning and the drive belt don't have anything to do with each other, though. Hooray for lack of sleep making me not think straight LOL
Just got one more TMG! Only this time, the cassette player shuts itself off after a couple of seconds! The light comes on too, then she just dies... any ideas please?
@disneysongtape Yeah all you need to do is wipe down the rubber pinch roller with some rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip. A lot of brown/green residue will come off, and once the pinch roller's dry it should stop eating up your tapes.
What's that orange knob/button on the control panel next to the volume control?

what do you mean by 1st and 2nd gen?

+Gabby Draws I think she means the different versions of Mother Goose. The first generation, I believe, had a battery cover that simply pops off, plus she could turn her head. The second generation, on the other hand, had a hinged battery cover, and she could not turn her head. I may be wrong, though.

When you recorded that narrations to this video it sounds as if you're not recording the audio from your camcorder, I don't hear any background acoustics or sounds that may be generated as you're repairing Mother Goose, were you just using the internal microphone in your MacBook, that's indeed you're still using one? I know on my iMac at least there's some kind of Ambient Noise Reduction that you can use with the internal microphone. I know this has nothing to really do with the video.
how much did this cost back then?

@blueoctopede I suppose WOW pretty much just used Alchemy II and Ken Forsse's ingenious team, as Ken Forsse stated in an interview: "Worlds Of Wonder never really appreciated the gift they had been given." So therefore WOW just used Alchemy II to make money. If it hadn't been for them, WOW would have gone bankrupt years before. That's what I think.
@blueoctopede eeww! well, at least it come out nice in the wash!

How many of these Mother Goose toys have you restored before? I take it that the motor the moves Mother Goose's head is located in the main base unit where the speaker is located, right? I feel like a complete and utter idiot for asking the next question of clearly obvious reasons, but does the blusher dry once applied? The only reason i ask is because you wouldn't want to to come off and potentially make a mess if you rub your hand or something else against the area where it's been applied.
My mother goose is working but no sound is coming out of her. What can be wrong with this? Thank you.
@1969Baddad

Either the volume dial is full of dust and will not allow any sound, bad speaker or the volume idal has a broken wire. Possibly the connector has come loose for volume as it happened to me once. That is a quick fix! I refurbish these and Teddy Ruxpins all the time.
