How To Turn Rough Watercolor Paper To Hot Press (smooth) Paper- (An Oddly Specific Tutorial)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Edited to add: Several viewers wondered if a hot laminator would work for making hot press paper. I tried it and it had no effect. I think it needs the pressure of the die-cut machine.
Got paper that is too rough and bumpy? Want to make it smooth? do you happen to have a manual die machine? well, then, this is the video for you!
I had lots of this cold press/rough Shizen handmade watercolor paper. I like it a lot but I wanted some in a smoother surface. the 5"x7" size comes in 50 or 100-sheet packs (100 sheets for under $25!) shrsl.com/42ipu and now I can create just the texture I want for a project. I used my old Big Shot die cutter (here is the newer model: shrsl.com/42iq0 it comes with the platform and plates you will need) to flatten my paper. Watch the video to see how I did it and how you can adapt the technique to work with the machine you have and get different levels of smoothness. Have fun with the variety of textures you can get!

This is a great tip. I will try it with the paper that I don't like because of it's super rough structure. Thanks a lot for sharing. For debossing a silicon mat additionally to the cardboard might help
Paper hack-so creative!
Texture on black shows beautifully.
Thank you for sharing ,it is a Brillo Idea ,Happy crafting xxxx
Very interesting, thank you :) going to try to make my own paper this summer and this will be useful to flatten it for different uses :)
Muy buena idea!! Gracias. La pondré en práctica seguro. ❤
Lindsay I love you, that's fantastic. Pricing on not pressed puts me off but this is genius. I'm also going to try this on paper I make myself. Thanks for your video.
Love how you solved this problem...Lindsay MacGuyver to the rescue! Thanks for the tip. Sandy

Oh, now I have to experiment, thank you so much Lindsay! 😊
Ingenious! I love this! First time I regret giving my larger die cutting machine away. Thank you!🦋
Omg this is revolutionary, glad I got a big shot ❤❤❤

Absolutely brilliant. Thank you. It's hard to find hot press in Canada, and now I know how to make it. 💓
That was fun… and informative… thanks for sharing your creativity and experience. Have a great day! 🙂
Great idea!
OMG you are so amazing !!! For me it is extra brilliant, as i bought a couple of watercolor pads that were too rough, i was really bothered by that, so... you helped me sooooo much !!! Did not want to buy other paper, so i am definitely going to try that asap, really fabulous idea, never seen this before ! So, you are amazingly clever, wow !!! LOVE IT ! So thanx so much for that !!!!!
Brilliant! 🎉
Good tip Lindsey. I knew there was a reason I kept my manual Big Shot when I brought the electric one. Thumbs up to you. Maybe you can share some more tips on using the Big Shot other than for embossing and die cutting. You are the best!
Wow Lyndsey this is genius. Love this hack. I love working with hot press watercolor paper but it is more expensive. Thank you
Great idea, thank you, Lindsay!
Lindsay that's brilliant! 😮😃😍♥️❣️ I would never have thought to do that. 🤦🏼♀️

Witchcraft!!!! You’re a smart cookie.
I have been wondering whether you can make a hot press surface from cold press- thank you so much for this video that answers my question! I was having visions of irons or hair straighteners or something 🤣🤣🤣
Love how innovative you are! Always gets my brain running crazy with ideas. Haha. I wonder if you heated up the paper with a heat gun first then quickly ran it through if you'd get even better results. Haha as close to hot rollers as it gets, minus an iron? Lol! Love it. :) new use for my die cut machine! Appreciate you!

@thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I had to click off before finishing but planned to shortly, but did you notice any difference at all in how it performed after? Sizing, drying time etc? Or was it just exactly the same but smooth? If so, that's just kick ass! Seriously brilliant 👏
I adore Shizen watercolor paper. I like their black better than Legion Stonehenge as it is more washi tape friendly. Thank you for an awesome tutorial.
Neat trick. I wonder if it will work on some cellulose papers. I'll have to try it. I love it when we learn something new that can save us money. Money saved that way buys more art supplies from Amazon!! Lol!! I am rapidly entering the " no buy" zone!!❤

Cool!
super idea! in medical terms, its an off label use of your die cutter, but in more to the point artistic terms, i'd call it an art hack! i love that embossing a frame onto the paper idea. must experiment... 🤔
Off topic, but im currently relearning how to paint water with gouache. I grabbed these little wood panels I had and started, then I went to the store later in the day and found a "paint it yourself" jewelry box, and now I have too many projects, lol. It's so easy to do this to myself. I had to put the box in the living room so I wouldn't stay up with it. I sketched a mother and baby lion on it, and I'm in love.
Great idea! I often wondered how painting on embossed watercolor paper would be, but using the machine to flatten the texture is brilliant. Too bad I've only got a small die cut machine. If I ever get a larger one I'm definitely gonna give this a try.

@@thefrugalcrafter Yeah, It would definitely 'hot press' the paper. Too bad I don't have one of those either 😆.
Lol you are smoothing out paper and I’m sanding watercolor paper to give it tooth to try for my pastels.
Interesting. Thanks! P.S. I prefer your shorter videos like this one.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Aren't you clever, Lindsay!!! Thank you for sharing this idea.
Love this hack! I have used the big shot to flatten out warped watercolor paintings before, but you are limited to the size that you can feed through the opening. I wonder if I can use a laminator to flatten larger watercolor paintings? I might have to experiment with some practice pieces.

I've ironed warped paper
How cool! I am currently on a no-buy, but I don't have a die cutter thing. Would that be considered breaking a no-buy if I were to get one? 🤣
Hullo Lindsay, You young lady are truly amazing! I love the other comment that mentioned trying to use their paper for pastels! Needing more “tooth” for pastels is something that I would like for my practice pieces. I am just so aware? Or am I just cheap? Of the higher cost of pastel surfaces! I want to practice more with pastels, I have even resorted to washing my papers to remove layers of soft pastel so I get another chance to work! These Shizen papers are nice, I got a book from Rosi’s Etsy shop. I don’t like buying smaller sheets, but maybe this way they are less expensive? Arrrguh! I gotta go look!

You can get 100 sheets of 5x7 for $24 on blick. I like using liquatex clear gesso to prime paper for pastel. You can use it over an underpainting, too for a base.

@@thefrugalcrafter yep, I found it! I had better finish up a painting before I buy any more art supplies, as I was warned just last night that I had better not bring in anything else until I get something finished and if not sold ready to sell or even just to giveaway!
I just love how you always think outside the box!! Thanks for sharing this. I don’t have a die cutter, but is it possible to iron paper, or will it disturb the size? 🖌🎨👩🏻🎨🤷🏼♀️

I think you may been a printing press. They are pricey but vevor has one that does 11" wide amzn.to/3vTHQsx I have a pottery wheel by them that is good value for money. I have not tried their presses tho.
I wonder if one could use a laminator to do it?
