How to Turn a Street Bike into an Adventure Bike | $1,000 Motorcycles vs 1,000 Miles Episode 2

Can $1,000 motorcycles make it 1,000 adventure miles? We’ll be taking these project bikes on our Hooked on Phoenix ride, a popular route that takes you from Mesquite, Nevada to Phoenix, Arizona and back. With a mix of dirt roads, technical sand and rocks, and even a little slab, this ride has something for every rider and certainly the right challenges to push these bikes to the limit.
In Episode 2, repairs are underway, and that means plenty of scrounging and fabrication are, too. If everything goes according to plan, the bikes will be ready for their 1,000-mile ride. But will all of the riders?

That XL600R is the best in show IMO. Hilarious that the stud on the head broke... such a common issue with those bikes! I had an engineer shop in Kenya drill it out and put in a heli-coil but guess what... they didn't cover the holes and the shreds and mess all fell into the engine. I have always wondered how well it would work to just put some massively long springs on those bikes. Like get some from a contemporary mx bike that are just like 3 inches longer and smack them on. I have thought a bit about the influences geometry wise and with the chain offset and shit, it shouldn't be too bad.

  • @blessedbackpacker222

2:50 instead of filling whole tank with apple cider vinegar, i would just fill quarter of it and keep rorating to cover all surface inside fuel tank. also after having the rust cleaned, i would do zinc plating from inside to somewhat repair the damage caused by rusting. tried and tested in many 20 30 years old motorcycle tanks.

Man, that piston at 3:04 is pristine for it's age! They must have been running just the right amount of no oil for it to last so well. Those pesky piston return springs are always a problem though. Can you go with stronger springs for more compression? Or is it softer springs for more compression? I can never remember which way to go with those. 2-strokes are even more tricky, because they hide the piston return springs... (sometimes they aren't even in the workshop manual!!)

Found this as I was thinking of the idea of modifying my old -84 Suzuki GSX 400E, with a protective plate for the engine, offroad tires, different gears/cogs to make it have more torque sooner (it gets most "power" after 6000 RPM), probably a stiffer suspension and some more protection for when it falls. Ideas on the subject? Open for ideas/advice, :)

I'm rooting for the ninja. C'mon ninjette, show them. It's got that rad factor. Also I would have loved to see the suzuki with the wind jammer on the dirt, goofy af.

Thanks Gordo Joe. The bush ninja was a hoot! 😂 We were all hoping that Chancelor would keep the wind jammer on the bike for the ride. Unfortunately for us and you, that didn't happen 👎🏻 - Wes
