I show how to turn a pepper mill on a lathe. This is a great beginner project and makes a great gift.
The pepper mill kit was furnished by chefwarekits.com/
Nick Cook's article in Spring 2004, American Woodturner was a great resource

"Turned" out great! A method I used when making a few pepper mills that wouldn't fit between centers when all I had was a smaller lathe was to turn the top on my pen mandrel after drilling it. It also gave better access to the top and bottom for finishing. After doing 3 of them, It did chew up my non stick bushings though...

Mike -- Thanks for the inspiration and the reminder. One of my first turning projects was a pepper mill. I bought a dozen kits and roughed out the blanks. After turning the first two, I got distracted by other things and the kits and blanks have never been united! The blanks are somewhere in my stack of wood. I'm sure I can find them. (The kits might be a little harder to locate.)

This video is about two weeks late, I just turned my first three mills for presents! Crushgrind mechanisms work well. Used bubinga for one and it is gorgeous but such a pain to turn! Congrats Mike and Happy New Year!

Mike Peace Woodturning Nope. Crushgrind mechanism requires a little bit different approach so not apples to apples. But what i did like was you using the skew to face off the end grain. I really struggled with gouges doing this and got a few catches and run backs. My first one wasn’t very pretty!

Thank you for the video. I'm faced to trying to do my 1st grinders and have watched bunches of videos, you've made it easier to under stand, especially about removing the tenons. I noticed what looks like towards the end that the body appears with the tenon again. Maybe a retake for video edit move. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks. I could not find what you wer referring to. A Min mark wood be helpful. I have the wood drive center. Could that have confused you. I taper the bottom to eliminate the original tenon.

@@MikePeaceWoodturning What I noticed is that you started to remove bottom tenon at time 12:35 then the top tenon at 13:00, but at 13:48 the tenons are back on the body. Sorry for nick-picking.

  • @MikePeaceWoodturning

@@MrBeechcrafter No worries. At 13:48 what might look like a tenon on the chuck side is the wooden drive that fits into the bottom hole. The top tenon is the tenon on the cap which I put on the base for turning.

Hey Mike, since you have done one of these now and have a finished one would you do another video and use the the finished one as a prop so we can see how it should look? Does that make sense? I thought I was paying attention but it seemed like I missed part of it.

Just a heads up on one thing I have found out about pepper mills: With the solid wood top they tend to be top heavy. So having the base a bit wider will make it more stable. Also the mortise at the bottom should not be too thin in case it does tip and crack the base. My tipped over, hit the floor and cracked. Live and learn.
