How to Turn a Bowl Without a Scroll Chuck | Woodturning Project

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Most woodturners use a scroll chuck to hold the wood blank when turning a bowl. But, if you don't have a scroll chuck, you can still turn a bowl using only a faceplate to mount the wood on the lathe. Ernie shows you several innovative methods you can use to secure a bowl to your lathe without a scroll chuck.

You remind me of my grandfather! Knowledgable, humble, sincere, and a Master Craftsman of the highest order. He didn't need new fangled thing-a-ma-bobs in his shop. He knew the old school tried and true from the old country way of doing stuff right. Taught me a lot when my dad wasn't around. Respect to you Sir, thanks for sharing!

Good evening Ernie.. Would you recommend a bowl saver tool that can be used safely to get multiple bowls out of one large piece like the one you just used to make this fine bowl? Also have you used it and could you rate it please? Love your wood turning Skills.. Your the man..Keep making these videos please

My lathe is so old (probably from the 1920s, weighs about 200 pounds!) and the headstock threads are oddball so I can't use a chuck. So this was very helpful. Thanks!

Thank you. I've just started turning, and this answered a lot of questions for me. All the videos I've been watching have been using cole jaws, and I was getting frustrated with the reliance there seems to be on individual tools for each process.

Hey there, I know I’m a little late but from my experience, every tool will work for many jobs on the lathe but it’s a matter of which one works the best for a specific job! I’m using a crappy set of Chinese lathe tools so I’ve had to make due lol

Thanks for the video how to make a bowl with a faceplate , because that's what I have to work with ... I've done a lot of lathe turning, but I've yet to turn a bowl. I plan to as soon as I get my lathe cleaned up, it was stored in a barn for 10 years. .. I think you could remove the super glued bowl with acetone instead of cutting it off..

I usually slather glue all over the bottom. I listened to one guy say "Why waste the glue when it will hold with less glue?" The reason I'm going to waste glue from now on with the glue block method is...when I was parting a beautiful bowl, all finished and ready to go, I forgot about the "Don't Waste Glue" method and thinking I had to cut two inches of wood the bowl flew off at 1" and got a huge, deep scratch on it and almost ruined this piece of old left over gold miners Sequoia I had found half buried in my yard. (The mine hadn't operated since around 1940-50) Waste the damn glue, what's it cost, 1/10th of a penny and another 3 seconds parting the piece.

Very dangerous,I tried it with hot glue and a plate went out like a bullet...I was very lucky because I was not standing in line with the wood. From that day I use screws only, make the bowl and then cut it above the screws.Stay safe and best regards to everybody.
