I made a dowel to fit the hole in the faceplate and chuck and then drilled a quarter inch hole in the middle and use a sharpened quarter inch steel bar so I can mark the exact center of the piece I'm working on.

I was taught to glue a sacrificial block on the bottom of the bowl blank and then screw the face plate to that. That way, you don't lose any bowl material or have screw holes to worry about.

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. It’s always helpful to have multiple techniques in the toolkit. FYI, I got my favorite kind of commission from a client (“here’s the wood, make me something cool…”) and it turned out that the wood they gave me was a cypress log that had been submerged underwater on the family ranch until it was found. No surprise that the wood is not just green but hyper saturated and soaking wet. Your video on microwave drying techniques came in clutch. Thank you!

Hot glue can be very handy with glue chucks and jam chucks. Can be easy to remove, leaving all the glue behind on the chuck but doesnt tear grain out. You have to pay attention to a lot of variables though. Gotta make sure you have enough surface area and arent leaving the glue too thick (because its flexible) or too thin. Have to pay attention to how wet your wood is otherwise it might decouple mid turn because water migrated to the glue joint lol Gotta mind your surface finish before gluing otherwise you might get slightly too good of a bond and tear out some grain. Gotta make sure the temperature of the glue comes down "just enough" before sticking the workpiece, otherwise too good of a bond. You can also use it as your tire for your jam chuck because its able to be turned so your jams can be perfectly concentric and you don't need to mess with a bunch of foam and fiddling with it trying to get it to run fairly true. Lol i started writing this in an attempt to convince people that hot glue is worth it but now that i write it all out, its a very fiddly process to get a good feel for. Idk, works fairly well for me.

I did something like this on my last bowl, I used double sided turners tape to stick it to the false tenon followed up with holt melt glue around the base. When finished I slow (10-30 rpm) turned the bowl and cut off the glue. I found that too high of a speed heats up the glue and makes a mess. I think mineral spirits will break the bond, but I didn’t have any with me. Pulling the double sided tape is a no problem to pull apart.

I am not a wood worker but I really enjoy watching your work. My son is a wood worker and he received a lathe for Christmas. I plan on being cremated when I pass and wanted to ask if anyone has heard of a cremation urn made out of wood? If so I would like my son to make one for me when I pass (Hopefully not soon). Your channel is great and relaxing to watch! Thanks!

Hey Kent, Goodafternoon afternoon from Alabama. Im new new here, just started today. Ive found this to be the most informative channel ive ever seen. Havent turned a piece of wood in 40 years. Wife bought me a lathe an tools as a gift. I made a sharpening system. Just havent got up my nerve yet lol. Never gets you anywhere does it.

Great lesson Kent. Face plates were around long before the advent of four jawed chucks.i had been turning for about 30 years before I bought my first chuck.

Lots of good advice and could save some people money, some turners might only turn the odd bowl if they do mostly spindle turning, why go to all the expense when a simple technique is all they need, nice looking bowl too.

Hi Kent. It's mentioned in the comments, and maybe a topic for a follow up video. The use of hot glue to get around the time waiting, and a worm screw. I have a block permanently attached to the plate, and then a course thread screw as my Worm. Both of which I use more often than I thought. Merry Christmas and New Year to you and the family.

I've recently acquired a lathe and need to block off some shelving from wood dust and I noticed the blackish transparent curtain behind you in the beginning of this video. Is that for dust containment? Is it on amazon? (I guess everything is on amazon...) I'd like something transparent but that doesn't attract dust like some plastics do. Thanks!!

Thanks Kent, I’m truly a beginner I have done a few bowls boxes and a couple of platters. I was turning a small bowl and my face broke at the base of the threads. It appeared to be pot metal. Is there a good brand you would recommend?

I really like the idea of a tenon/mortice glue block for added strength and stability. Far less chance that the glue block will detach. You are the only one I've seen do this and it is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

you don't need stainless. like he said ordinary woodwork screws, sized to the holes in your faceplate. reuse them a few times and then throw them out. They're cheap enough.

Good question. I only reuse the screws. I bought a small box years ago and I've never even used the ones in the bottom. The impact driver prevents stripping the head so they last forever…or at least a very long time. The size should be just a little smaller than the hole in the faceplate. Thank you very much for adressing this issue. As an absolute woodturning beginner i just got myself a 70‘s Bosch woodturning device for a powerdrill. I used it so far only to make drawer- or toolhandles. I thought for time to maybe try making a small bowl on the baseplate attachment but never came up with a real battleplan for it. Even though your method seems a bit complicated it seems quite safe. Most simpler (But Not easier) methods ive seen, were based on the approach to try to reduce the wastestock from the inner bowl as very last bit. What do you think of it? Thank you very much for your good work

Is such a large diameter tenon necessary? Why not flatten the bottom of the blank as you did, and then drill a 1/2" hole about 1/8-3/8" deep for a dowel peg. Then turn a glue block and drill a 1/2" hole in it and glue in a short dowel as a registration pin, leaving a bit less than the depth of the hole in the blank. Then apply glue to the blank on the flat area, and then fit it on the 1/2" dowel to center the blank on the waste block. Edit: After drilling the blank, just glue a 1/2" dia x 1" L dowel in the blank, and then mount and drill the glue block as deep as needed for the dowel that is glued in the blank.

Kent, you are without question a master woodturner...but... OMG this was a long route. Why not just remount the faceplate on the bottom of the bowl? Fill the screw holes with glue if they bother you or add some little stick on felt feet. I'll admit, I feel a bit disrespectful even suggesting such a thing given your far superior talent. I guess I don't have your patience...

You can do that but most turners don't want any marks on the bottom of the bowl.

the screw holes are really ugly. Especially in some woods like oak where the screws stain the wood black.

​@@executive First off, if you really want to get into Woodturning, you need basic tools, which generally includes turning tools, a sharpening system, and a 4 jaw chuck among other things. Can you turn a bowl with just a faceplate? Yes. Are screw holes ugly? Yes...but they can easily be covered with small felt self adhesive cabinet bumpers. I sold a Zebrawood bowl on Etsy with them and the buyer was very pleased as she was planning to display it on a glass coffee table. Kent would be the first to say turning should be fun for the hobbyist.

@@PINEPUPPY ... or, you could just do what Kent showed , and not have any ugly screw holes or felt pads. also if your wood isn't equalized, the holes turn into cracks. Perfecting your craft is part of the fun for hobbyists and production turners alike ;) Like kent says , chucks cost a good chunk of money. This method is a good way to get you by , until you add a chuck to your arsenal.

Why didn't you use hot glue instead of white glue ? It is easily softened with a heat gun .
