How To Tune Your Nissan TD42 the RIGHT Way!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

TD42's are a legendary diesel engine powering Buses, 4wds and Forklifts across the globe. They aren't without their problems though. One of the key ways to keep your TD42 reliable and cool is to select the right injection pump and tune it correctly.
In this episode we take our freshly built TD42 turbo engine to Evolution Tuning to get the fuelling and injection timing calibrated for a clean running, powerful and economical TD42. Yes it is possible.
This specific combination consists of a Factory spec Turbo TD42, All States Diesel 11MM Injector Pump, GT28/63 Turbocharger and a Plazmaman Water to air intercooler.

Put a Spal pusher fan on the front of the heat exchanger for low range work. I have a FMIC and fitted one wired to also come on/off with a/c, on when i want it on and off (regardless of air con, for water crossings) with a three way switch. The $150 one will fit between the bonnet latch support and grill. The $350 1500cfm unit requires grill clearanceing(significant) to fit, but the static pressure performance is so much better it's technically worth it.

I watched this with a good mate of mine who is a diesel fuel injection specialist and he said this was a great explanation on how to tune a diesel with a mechanical pump. Decent numbers from an 11mm, we saw 220hp and 812nm reliably on 33's with a custom 12mm setup and gturbo combination at 28psi, still going 7 years later, the td42 is somewhat underated if setup and tuned properly. Love the number plate too by the way 😉

Al, you’re brilliant! Woody, your enthusiasm and appreciation for the quality of filming, editing, and occasional work instruction is always leveling up! You guys are extremely motivational, to me, after watching your videos/episodes. I recently picked up a “91” Toyota Soarer(factory r154 manual) for cheap and I’m currently rebuilding the 1jz with a few upgrades 😉 (I live in Florida by the way). If I could afford to I wouldn’t hesitate to support you with some $$, but due to circumstances it’s not possible. I wanted to show my appreciation for your work, so once again “Thank You & keep building peoples dreams, it’s f’n badass”🔥😎🏎️🏁

You are limited with standard elements, ultimately you need more fuel over the same duration as generally turning pumps up lengthens the duration/ dwell but any more than 32 degrees will just make smoke. Dpuk explains this perfectly. With bigger elements you can double that power figure. Also change governor spring for more rpm......in fact just direct control the rack and don't bother with a governor! Put a longer duration cam in too and balance it etc.......7000rpm? Lol

This is a 4WD diesel, which means it's all about low end torque so you can drive up a wall in 1st gear. And they explained quite clearly that they just let it free boost. A waste gate limits boost once you've hit your target. It never adds more, as only the turbo can do that. The only way from here is more fuel which makes more power, which makes more exhaust, which makes more boost, which opens the option for more fuel, and then you continue that until the engine explodes... at which point you dial it back a notch. But this is a TD42 with a stock bottom end, so getting a bigger fuel pump will just make it drop it's guts on the floor and/or make a huge plume of black smoke. But Gus doesn't have an unlimited fuel budget, so the fuel pump was calibrated for efficiency. An air-fuel ratio of 45:1 at the top end is good for his wallet and good for the engine life.

Do Australians pronounce B or Bed C or Ced D or Ded E or Ed P or Ped T or Ted V or Ved so why pronounce Z as Zed? and why H as Haych? And if the opposite of right is wrong and we yanks drive on the right side, then you must drive on the wrong side. Right?

  • @andersjjensen

    @andersjjensen

    8 ай бұрын

Everywhere that speaks commonwealth English pronounce it "zed" to make it phonetically easier to distinguish from "cee". This is a relic from being a Germanic language with Latin influence and most other central and northern European languages pronounce it "zed" or "zet" for the same reason. As for "haych"... "aitch" doesn't even have an h in it. In American English that's actually a relic of a specific regional British dialect that categorically doesn't pronounce h if it's the first letter in the word. Harry becomes Arry, etc. This dialect shares this feature with French where they might as well just abolish the letter h entirely as they borderline never pronounce it no matter where it's featured in the word.

300HP in a diesel is a lot, because it usually comes with 500lb of torque. You don’t really need it though, people out here crawl the craziest places with a gasoline Toyota 4 bangers making 100lbs of torque tops.

  • @andersjjensen

Gearing lower than 1:1 is a torque multiplier. I've seen old gasoline tractors pull a wagon with 25 tons of wet straw bales over soggy fields without strain. It happens at a relaxed pedestrian speed, though, because 72:1 is Herculean effort at snail pace.

Timing should be done properly with a dial indicator not just "see what she does" this way then that way.

A dial gauge is good for a baseline, but various factors will change how a motor reacts to its pump timing so the dyno will give you a clear result of what timing adjustment the motor is most efficient at.

I dont know much about diesel tuning, but if you are seeking peak performance, why is setting it to a book value superior to testing various values in real life scenario to see what the engine performs best with? Im heaps more familiar with petrol tuning and never has a 'set it to this value' been acceptable for maximising performance in applications beyond a stock setup.

The torque comes on heaps earlier in diesels May seem like a low power figure but when you've got 610nm coming on at 2,000 rpm it feels pretty powerful

Yeah, Ive got a 3.2DID Pajero currently, its just factory 200hp. Ive had other n/a petrols rated at 200hp too, but absolutely no way they would move a 2.3T vehicle let alone putting a couple tonne behind it too. Diesels are powerful engines, they just don't rev so don't make those peak hp numbers that petrols do. Modern turbo petrols are a huge improvement, but for me having huge torque available in the rev range that you live in 95% of the time is way more important that the peak of the dyno curve.
