How to Trim a GuideRail - and why you’d want to! [video 468]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I’ve had a few guiderail questions recently particularly from Parkside #plungesaw users who’s options are limited when it comes to third-party rails, and in this video I show how you can get your hands on a cheap #Makita - pattern rail, and basically turn it into a #Festool - pattern rail, just using your plunge saw and stock blade. Enjoy!
2022 update: Be aware that the Excel 2 x700mm rails supplied with the Excel plunge saw are if a different pattern to the rail I’m discussing here.

I just found your channel, I'm enjoying it. I've had a Festool TS55 since 2006, I had it bought for me in Canada and sent to Japan because the Festool distributor in Japan wanted four times the list price in Canada, the same with the rails or tracks. I got sent a 1900mm track from the US, and it survived the trip and I use it today because they want about $540 US for the 1900mm rail here in Japan. The plywood here is 91cm x 182 cm for basically 3'x6' so the 1900mm rail works great. I'm finding your videos very informative. I just made a travel hard case for taking my tracks to a job site. Cheers from Tokyo! Stu

I kept the anti-tipping lip on my makita rail, I just routed a groove in the base of my Dewalt tracksaw! Easy because of the aluminium base of the saw and now that one has the anti-tipping feature as well. AndI am pleased to see I only have a fraction of the play of the makita saw shown in this video.

Hi Peter - you made me smile yet another Friday. Thanks. Smart idea to convert a guide rail of one type into another type. I do have Mafell/Bosch guide rails. For me the trick was to visit the exhibition / fair in Germany a few times where Bosch gave away guide rails to those answering some questions and doing some things in their stand. I did that a couple of times and so I got a few Bosch rails for free. I did cut those in lengths which are easy to use. Maybe considered barbaric but when you have sufficient lengths - why not.

When I did this today with my Festool Gide rail and TS55 the heating up of the Excel rail underneath welded the splinterguard on the Festool, rail to the Excel rail. For the next one I used a wooden spacer to hold the Festool, rail above the Excel and it was fine. Worth remembering this risk.

You're absolutely right to call out that the anti-tip mechanism on the makita saws has some play in it with the lip being of absolutely no use is a) you don't have a makita saw, b) don't make tons of bevel cuts. Having cut a rail in half for the pleasure of a KZread audience, I was really interested in this video - and now the comments. Let's see what they bring. But the important thing her is something implied which is the right to modify our tools to suit our needs. Something I'm all for!

Your ingenuity continues to entertain and impress in equal measure. Just a quick warning about aluminium dust (rather than larger bits of swarf) - it's potentially explosive! It's not unknown for static charge build-up in a vacuum system to ignite it (see KZread for some scary-fun examples). Personally, if I have a large amount of dust/swarf at the end of an operation, I'll use a dustpan and brush to collect the majority of it before retrieving the last little odds and sods with a vacuum - better safe than sorry! Also, the swarf really hurts if you stand on it in bare/socked feet - don't ask me how I know that!

Yes, I have the 52 tooth aluminium blade in my TS55 and that cuts really well in ply, but most TCT blades work decently for the occasional cut in a soft metal like aluminium, and if you need to do more than the odd cut then a specialist blade is the best bet. 👍👍

What a fabulous tool hack, I love it. How about something a little more left-field; how feasible would it be to make one's own custom track, from wood? What are the time/cost benefits? Are there additional features that could be added; clamping points, spacer/offsets? How could one adapt a cheap Workzone/Parkside mini-circular saw to function as a tracksaw with a home spun wooden track saw guide rail?

Stock blade, though a higher tooth count than the 24t in this blade would be preferable. I’ve used the stick 48t Festool blade for all kinds of quick cuts in Ali. If you do a lot, then best to get the proper blade, but for the odd cut it’s fine.

Thanks Lester. The Festool saw will run on most tracks apart from Mafell/Bosch, and deWalt, all of whom have gone their own way in terms of track design. The Makita tracks are generally a good-value option, especially the long rail, or the Excel rail I refer to in this video. As I mention in the vid, I did a whole other video about guiderail compatibility, might be worth a watch - link in the video description here. 👍

Hi Peter, I bought a macallister earlier in the year with two 700mm rails. Long story short the second rail got damaged beyond use from a kick back while cutting 16mm HPL ( messy underwear experience I can tell u). I didn't need any more than 700 mm since as I only do maintenance and upkeep, but a job is coming up shortly where full sheets will need to be cross cut. Is the Makita 1.4m rail good enough for comfort, or would the 1.5m be better? I can't visualise it with only one of my rails ( the other went as scrap aluminium) and clearance to start and complete the cut each end might leave the 1.4m a bit short maybe? There seems to be a pretty vast price difference between the 2 also.....for only 100mm extra aluminium. Thanks.

For the record, I'm planning to cut a newly purchased Kreg Adaptive Cutting System (ACS) guide track, but in my case it would be to cross cut it into two smaller sections. In your experience, is it OK to simply use the standard circular blade that most track saws come with, or should I swap it out with something expressly designed for this task?

Steve, I used my miter saw with a 12"/305mm 80 tooth blade to cut a 55"/700mm track into two shorter lengths. It cut cleanly through the aluminum and the glide strips and splinter guard with no damage. If you don't have access to a miter saw, your Kreg saw with another section of track or improvised fence clamped perpendicular to the section to be cut should work well.

@@davey820051 Thanks Dave. I've actually got the entire Kreg ACS unit (MFT table with attached guide track), so there should be no problem making a ninety degree cut (a great system BTW). My concern was whether I would have to swap out the cutting blade to a higher tooth density blade like the one you used on your miter saw. The Kreg saw out of the box provides a 48 tooth blade and I wasn't sure if that was OK.

Hi Peter, another useful video and I am in the market for my First Plunge Saw, but unfortunately been checking around and Screwfix don't seem to stock Mac Allister Plunge Saws anymore (Although there is ONE left on Amazon but for £175 ??) and also the Parkside Plunge Saw is no longer available from Lidl, not sure if it will ever come around again. To my surprise and initial delight I did see one on the shelf in my Local Lidl store only about three weeks ago, but on closer inspection, the box had been tampered with and the Guide Rails plus other bits I suspect were missing from the box. When I asked about it, the girl simply took off the shelf into the back of the store never to be seen again. Screwfix do sell the "Erbauer" 185mm version for £159.99 but not sure where this sits with the Parkside / Mac Allister story unless Mac Allister and Erbauer are made by the same manufacture. So in short I'm still confused about which Plunge Saw to buy for my first plunge into this area :-(

Hi Colin. The Parkside is only available from Lidl a couple of times a year here, which is mostly why I recommended the MacAllister tbh - disappointing to see it not listed on the Screwfix website, though other MacA products are, so hopefully it’s just a stock thing. You can still get the MacAllister plunge saw from B&Q, through the website or in store. I looked at the Erbauer in this video - Two Big Saws, kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHeKsrB_laungZs.html - alongside the near-identical big Triton saw, and they were both very nice saws, but the larger blade causes some issues sourcing replacements or alternatives - even the manufacturers don’t sell them as a spare! My conclusion was that unless you really needed the extra ~12mm or so depth of cut that these saws provide, then a regular plunge saw with a 160/165mm blade is a better bet for most people. HTH. P

I'm having terrible trouble keeping joined sections of dewalt track straight. All my full board cuts are bowing in the middle by about 2-3mm as the track moves slightly as the saw passes over the join. I'm convinced its because the dewalt system is flawed, in only connecting with one joining bar in the middle of the track. All these other tracks (festool, makita and the copies) seem to use 2 bars. 1 bar is just not rigid enough to have zero play in the joined tracks. Any other Dewalt users have the same issue? It's so bad I'm thinking of moving to the makita saw, even though my whole set up is dewalt. I wonder if I could some how make a brace that holds the dewalt track togther more securely.

They look like the rails sold with cheapest plunge tools like the Draper/Tough Master/GMC/Silverline, so I think I'll stick with the Makita rails, since a 1500mm Makita is only £13 more than 2x700mm Excel rails.

Thanks @@10MinuteWorkshop, It's worth noting that while no-one seems to be selling Makita pattern rails cheaper than Makita now, this video is still highly relevant to those of us who want a rail with an upward facing T-slot for accessories, since Makita's rails are still half the price of official Festool rails. In my case, I paid for most of the cost of my Makita rails by buying an Einhell TE-PS 165, which is £30 cheaper than the cheapest other plunge saw, as it doesn't come with any rails, and I'd rather put £30 towards a £50 rail that I want, than have a spare £30 rail cluttering up my workshop. Note that the Einhell is interesting in that it has two grooves in it's base rather than one. It's own rails two ribs and are reversible, with one edge for 90deg cuts, the other for 45deg cuts. This of course means that unlike most rails, you can't use Einhell rails with other plunge saws, but you can still use the Einhell saw with Festool rails (but not Makita rails without the modification described here). Anyway, since I don't have any rail other than the Makita, I'm going to have to get creative to trim mine, but hopefully running an outer edge guide along the Makita rib will give me the precision I need.

NO! The 2x700 rails are a different pattern altogether. They seem to have stopped supplying the 1x1400mm rail. The Excel branded saw and 2x700 rails are a visually very similar to the Parkside, with all the issues of that saw. Yes, that means that the Excel plunge saw won’t fit the excel 1x1400mm rail. 🤦‍♂️And yes, it is an old video, details were correct t at the time of publication. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop Thanks for the reply on this old video of yours. I emailed HBM and they replied that it's correct that they no longer deliver to the UK, must be another benefit of Brexit they keep talking about. I'll watch your video again but I guess I'll have to buy the Makita track if I want a 1400 in one piece. Cheers

I met once a woodworker that did not like metal dust in his shop as it might do something to his tools. Now I am seeing you cutting aluminum I am puzzled.

Everybody’s different Frits; maybe I’m more casual with my tools than he is; I certainly wouldn’t recommend sprinkling metal swarf into the motor, but I’m quite happy to make the occasional cut, as long as I tidy up afterwards. 👍👍

Festool rails are now under £80 for the 1400mm , seems pretty reasonable to me. Interesting to see you cutting aluminium with the track saw.

It is, compared to what I paid for mine; but for some folks, spending the same as their (e.g. Parkside) saw cost on a single rail would be unthinkable, so getting one for less than half that price - or two for the same price - has some considerable appeal. Any TCT blade will be fine for the occasional cut in soft metal like aluminium, but if it’s something you need to do regularly then a blade made for the job will be better, and a higher tooth count will give a better finish. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop yes agree it’s all about budget.I do actually prefer the makita aluminium blades. I have one on my kapex 96 teeth , cuts plastic extrusion and aluminium both very accurately.

Tracksaw workshop P 6, DIY 8’ guide rail - kzread.info/dash/bejne/X41hyamYaJq7qtY.html. This is for folks who don’t want to do that, but want to use standard rails on their saw. Also, is a rail a tool? I’d say it’s an accessory. 🤷‍♂️👍

@@tonysheehan7766 Don't know. They would torture other criminals to steal from them and since violent psychopaths don't hand over their loot when you ask nicely the Toe Cutters would torture them. Their favourite was not cutting off toes but drilling holes in kneecaps and other parts.

"flashy" like a 'spiv' or flashy as in moiré patterns on screen. If it's moiré, then it's due to imbalance between the size/resolution of your playback device, so easily resolved - unlike say, giving me fashion advice... 😂
