    Hey Ruby. You did well to flush the dog's mouth and fur as that will help dilute the toxins. Activated charcoal only really helps when given within 30 minutes of ingesting poison, as after this period most of the poison has already been absorbed. Signs to look out for are mostly nervous system based, such as tremors, incoordination, seizures, lethargy and collapse but may also include vomiting and diarrhoea. If your dog does show any of these signs he will need to go to the vet so they can put him on a drip and supportive care.

This morning he pooped quite soft and it had some red in it. The stool was still a lump but it was kind of watery. I just gave him some pedialyte mixed in water with sugar and red cell and im not sure if im supposed to give him sugar. I dont know what else to do other than to keep him hydrated. Please tell me what to give him or do😭.

    Hey Naadi. This could possibly be poison or just a severe gastritis. If it gets any worse or continuous for more than 24 hours he will need to be seen by a vet so that they appropriate treatment can be started as he might need some antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. In the mean time it is good that you are keeping him hydrated as these cases usually dehydrates very fast.

    Would you be able to do a video regarding common poisons that someone may see in regards to when a dog is poisoned in their home or an area and info like symptoms, when the expected onset of said symptoms is, how to treat it or at least if any remedies are better than others for it in order to get them to a vet hopefully on time and how long before it becomes fatal as this will help people recognise what might be a source if their dog shows signs of poisoning and be able to give the vet a better idea of what they might be dealing with as not everyone is aware what is poisonous or what it does to a dog. Obviously some poisons are far too fast acting but in most cases you can at least expect enough time to respond to it. (If you already have such a video sorry i didnt see it)

  • @DogtorPete

    @DogtorPete

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Amelia. Thanks for your suggestion. I have made a video where I cover the most common toxic household items for dogs where I briefly explain the symptoms to look out for and how it is generally treated. It does becomes difficult to say for certain which poison your dog may have, as many of the symptoms overlap and the treatment that can save your dog in one instance might kill your dog in another. So in that sense it is dangerous to give instructions on the internet without being able to assess the dog as a vet. But I do understand where you are coming from, and I am planning on making a Pet First Aid / CPR course in the future where I demonstrate on an actual dog what you need to loook out for and what you can do at home while you are on the way to the vet. Do you reckon this would be something that people will be interested in?

    @@DogtorPete Definitely even if you don't know any immediate countermeasures to a poison knowing how they can help their pet in any way would surely be a pet owner's dream, it's heartbreaking when one dies, even more so if we could have helped them. @@ameliakyle7054 It really depends on if it is a topical, ingested or inhaled poison, and then you have accidents such as electric shock and near drowning that is approached in a whole different way. But I will cover each emergency type of situation individually so that it is easily searchable and accessible. But jah I think there is a need for these type of info products so my wife and I (who is also a vet) have been considering making a course covering these topics for quite a while now.

    @@DogtorPete i imagine it's painful as a Vet when you learn an animal died on the way to your care or arrived in a state where it's chance of survival has significantly dropped due to not receiving first aid that can help it, im fairly sure with electricity you need to identify if it's still in contact with the source of the shock, would it be possible to include info that helps identify if these causes for urgent care are culprit in cases where the owner isn't immediately aware? (drowning you would almost always know, but i dunno if a dog being electrocuted by something would be easy to tell apart from poison convulsions)

    The activated charcoal will help to absorb some of the toxins that is still present in the stomach, but if the dog is already showing clinical signs (bloody diarrhoea or bloody vomit) it means the toxins had already been absorbed into the bloodstream and activated charcoal wont really help in these advanced cases. I would advise to phone the vet and tell him/her that the dog isn't better so that he can be reevaluated and treatment adjusted if needed.

    Hey Sharmela. It is really difficult to be able to tell without physically examining the dog. Poison can show signs of lethargy, weakness and difficulty breathing, but these are non-specific clinical signs which can also be caused by many other things. If this continues you will need to take you dog to a vet to be properly examined.

    Hey Ghelo. No, sugar, especially Xylitol, should never be given to a dog as this will lead to a rapid drop in blood sugar which can lead to liver failure.

    This is horrible videos should exist to keep you away from the vet

  • @TJCarpenter

    All of these videos are useless beyond 'take your dog to the vet.' What do you do when vets won't see your dog and you can't afford to go to a Pet ER? Guess the dog has to die. Gotta love 'vets'. They seem to care a lot about wealthy dog owners and a lot less about keep animals from dying without any qualifiers.

    If you want to own a pet you will need to be able to provide for him financially, and this includes taking him to the vet when he gets sick or injured. Do not come here with your emotional blackmail, I will not have it. It is not a vet's fault that you cannot care for your dog. This channel's aim is to provide free and accurate information regarding common conditions in pets, not ways how you can bypass the care that your vet can provide based on his/her 6+ years of training.

    If I'm not mistaken Kaner flower is part of the Oleander group, which is extremely poisonous to dogs. Your dog will need to see a vet as soon as possible especially if he starts showing symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and drooling.

    @@Crexwax okay just monitor him closely and if he starts showing any of those symptoms or starts having lack of coordination, weakness or rapid breathing he will need to go to the vet. Even one or two flowers can make them very ill and can lead to death, so just keep a close eye on him
