How to transmit ctrl maps to Roland A-Pro

Works for Roland A-300, A-500, and A-800 Pro.
Download: drive.google.com/file/d/1Hgz0...
A-800 is five octaves, has 61 keys, which makes it great for an upper or lower manual for a Kronos organ. A-500 is four octaves and is great for controlling Kronos synths. A-300 is great for controlling the Kronos with a small footprint.

Just wanted to say thanks for this video, it helped me solve my issue! For some reason my control maps weren't sending from the editor to the keyboard (despite seeing the 'receiving' message on the keyboard). Switching to the "Advanced USB Driver" fixed the problem!!

Thanks again! Although most peoples' Roland A-Pro needs don't involved a Korg Kronos, the information here should be sufficient to help anyone with this controller, whether that be with a different hardware synth or DAW. My second piano was a Technics arranger keyboard, not too different from the older Korg Pa boards. I almost bought a Pa1000, but I became enamored with analog synths.

Ok, I found software MIDI OX, that receives and identifies sysex messages sent by Pa1000. But, I need to get USB-MIDI adapter, because sysex messages are not communicating via USB communication. You also mentioned about that in this video. My second question: A-500 does not communicate at all with Pa1000 via USB cable, however it gets power from the Pa1000. Therefore I use 5-pin MIDI cable and power adaptor for A-Pro. As I understood you are using USB communication between A-Pro and Kronos. Thanks again for replay and help.

I acquired the needed SysEx dumps from the discs that came with the Kronos. After the Kronos OS update took place, a kind member of the Korg Forums shared with me the updated version of the SysEx dump. I have no idea where to get it for the Pa1000 so maybe MidiOx is the only way. Keyboard manuals usually have only the most basic Midi implementation chart, and unfortunately not the needed SysEx information. I find it very strange the A-500 does not communicate with the Pa1000 over USB. It should at least work at the most basic level, which is key pitch, note on and off, and the modulation wheel/stick. If the Advanced USB Driver is turned off in the A-500 and you have just a regular default control map, you should be able to at least play notes on the Pa1000 through the A-500. However, I am not familiar with the Pa1000. It may be that its USB port is not used for Midi, but only for preset and storage purposes. If that is the case, you'll need to buy a power supply for the A-500 and make a tradition 5-pin Midi connection between the keyboards. The power supply I use is the Roland AC Adaptor PSB-120, but I think there are other models that are compatible.

Thank you very much for quick reply and your time spent for my issue. I have a power adaptor and I have communication via 5-pin midi cable. I just thought it would be nice to use USB cable, which is simple and tidy. I will probably buy USB-MIDI adaptor to see sysex files from Pa1000, because there was no any CD/DVD in Pa1000 box. Thanks again and have a nice day my driend)

hi man! i just looking into buying this keyboard and I ran thru the manual. it says they implemented for logic/garage band, that the value encoder moves the cursor along the time bar in the daw, but for other daws, no such function is mentioned (i use windows, cubase and live). in the same time i saw in live10 theres a selectable roland A pro in the midi interfaces which the oudated unit manual doesnt mention at all. but theres no information on what that setting would enable with the particular unit. looks like that was made on abletons side, not rolands. any ideas on this? the a pro editor does not contain any option for the value encoder. thx for some insight!

It is nicer than the older versions of the keylab for sure, but I am not familiar with Arturia's latest offerings. Not sure of the Keylab lets you toggle between different midi configurations as can be done with control maps. I also do not think Keylabs can be made to transmit sysex.

So I'm trying to do something similar, except I have a more budget friendly VR-09B organ and an A-800 Pro. I want to program the A-800 Pro's sliders to control VR-09B's lower manual. All I need to do is figure out what the SysEx messages would be. I see you have value ranges from a min of 8 to a max of 0. I try to set this as my range, but it keeps resetting back to 0-127.

  • @troublesomecorsair

    @troublesomecorsair

I've been working with the GSi Gemini which also has 0-8 drawbars--but actually responds to and only works with the 0-127 range. I guess some organ clones "scale up" these ranges so that 0-8 is stretched to 0-127. One problem I encountered with the Hammond XK-5 is that the drawbars are like switches, not sliders. Looking at the top of page 12 in the Midi Implementation chart of the VR-09, it does look like the range is 0-8. The Kronos is a bit backwards. I wouldn't know how to set up a sysex string of code for the VR-09B though. I would have to buy one to figure it out. Maybe Midi-Ox would help but I'm not sure the drawbar sysex data is transmitted by moving the drawbar of the VR-09B.

How did you find the control map for the Kronas keyboard? I have a Roland JV 1080 and i'm trying to get the rotary knobs and sliders to work with that (I have a Roland A500 PRO) but I can't understand a thing when it comes to the APRO editing software. Did you create the code yourself? if you imported it, where did you find it? Thank you for the video! Hello Mr. Ramos. Yes, I did create these control maps myself, using the A-Pro Editor. After assigning each and every button, slider and rotary to a very specific Sysex function, I transmitted my code as a Control Map to the controller itself via USB from the computer. A drawbar organ, as we know, has 2 or 4 groups of eight drawbars but the Kronos Control Surface only has one group of sliders, making it impossible to control all the drawbars real-time. That's where the Roland A-Pro comes in! It acts as a secondary Control Surface for the Kronos. Not all Midi Controllers have this Sysex functionality, which is highly important because the Kronos is somewhat lacking in the regular Control Change (cc) department. Thankfully I got hold of the Kronos SysEx Dump and Midi Implementation files which helped me find the correct addresses. I'm no midi guru but I do understand the A-Pro Editor in regards to Control Change and Sysex. I don't know if I can help you out but I can try! Somehow!

That's awesome man! so what are cc and SysEx? are they just different methods to send information to the Synth? Can some synths only take one or the other? Thank you for the fast reply!! I really appreciate the help as synthesizers are such an interesting instrument to me but at the same time so foreign to me as how they work.

  • @troublesomecorsair

cc and SysEx are actually the same thing. They're a string/sequence of values or bytes. cc is three bytes while SysEx is much longer and complicated. For instance, a string of SysEx might look like this: F0 42 30 68 43 0B 06 00 00 xx 00 00 yy F7 The 5th byte defines function code F0 = What all Sysex begin with 42 = means that the maker is Korg 30 = Receive Current Sample Information Request 68 = means it's a Kronos 43 = Function (Parameter Change (integer)) 0B = TYP |11/12| (11 = 0B in hexidecimal) 06 = SOC 00 = SUB 00 = PID xx = IDX (part of parameter id (see combi.txt, etc) ((drawbar1)) 00 = valueH Value (bit14-20) (*4) 00 = valueM Value (bit7-13) (*4) yy = valueL Value (bit0-6) (*4) F7 = What all Sysex end with A cc string looks more like this: B0 00 64 It's no good going about it this way. It's impossible to understand without a real life practical application of these functions. It starts and ends with sound, and all we ever do is try to find ways to manipulate it.

Okay so to really understand and edit the effects on my JV 1080 with the knobs or sliders on my A500, would I need to find a SysEx dump file for the JV 1080? If so what are those and where did you find yours for the Kronos?

  • @troublesomecorsair

The files I needed for my Kronos are on the set of 3 disks that are included with the Kronos. However, after an OS update, a kind soul on the Korg forums shared with me the updated files. I've been watching the JV 1080 video manual to see how editing is done, and it looks like there's no easy way to get this old synth working with a controller. As it is now, the JV 1080 should respond to the basics: velocity, pitch, note on and off, pitch bend up or down, and mod wheel (pushing upwards on the joystick). I can see how great it would be to somehow bind the sliders and knobs of the A-Pro to the desired parameters of the JV 1080, thus eliminating the need to edit on that tiny screen through pages and pages of values. The information you're looking for might be in the Owner's Manual. I've downloaded it off the Roland site. Pages 130 and onward are of particular interest. I'll have a look. If I can understand this synth's layout, it may be that I can come up with a solution for you.
