Connecting a Roland A500 Pro to an iPad Air

Музыка

Connecting a Roland A-500 Pro USB/MIDI keyboard to the iPad Air using the lightening to USB converter ("camera connection kit").
It shows how to solve the problem of the non MIDI class compliance, and the power problem of the A-500 pro.

Thanks for video. I thought it was boring when started but realised it may have 'bored' right through the problem that I could not get through & now can be getting to good music. 😊

Happy my video could help you. Neo Soul Key is a really good sounding e-piano module. It does not sound as good as the pc/mac version of Neo Soul, but I like it very much. It sounds better than the IK Multimedia E-piano or the Korg Module E-pianos.

I'm using Korg's module with in App bought Synthology acoustic piano. The sounds are ok, but what I like most is the set list feature and the integration of sheet music within the set list. I'm also using the Acoustic and E-Piano apps from IK Multimedia. Here I'm missing the dynamic and I clearly hear the loops, especially in the basses when using sustain pedal. I used the iPad with an studio logic acuna88 keyboard on a gig and it worked very nice. amazing, cool and light weight setup for gigging.

If you switch Roland's advanced keyboard mode off (like shown in the video) it gets so called class compliant. In this mode you don't need drivers on iOS (neither on MacOS). But you're right you still need drivers on a Windows machine.

Hi, Please I need your HELP to starting my Roland A-500pro MIDI Keyboard Controller on my MacBook Pro (15 Inch 2016). I used the Include USB Cable to connect it to my USB-C HUB PORT. I followed the same instructions on the Manual (Restarted - Connected to USB and switched A-pro to USB then went to MIDI in Application (Utility). Nothing appear in MIDI and I Receive this Message on Mac:- "USB Accessories Disabled - Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices". MacBook Pro 2016 has only 4- ports USB-C Ports - A-Pro can only be connected through a Hub . Please help me

Hi Rosomyat. I don't have the Roland anymore, so I can't test your problem. But reading your post I see "... using too much power..." in the error message of your Mac. This sounds like the same problem I had back then when connecting the A-500 to my iPad. The A-500 uses too much power over the USB and the iPad cannot provide it. Please watch the video on how I solved it. In short: power your A-500 using an external wall plug (original Roland is the PSB-1U) and connect it to the DC IN plug (voltage and polarity are shown in the video ~ 9min:30s)). This way you avoid the A-500 being powered thru USB connection of your Mac. Don't forget to switch power selector (17) to DC. Another possibility could be to use a powered USB hub. The USB power would then be provided to the A-500 thru the hub and not the MacBook. Obviously the hub needs to provide enough power. I hope this helps. Good luck

@@meti6505 Thank you so much for your kind reply. I really appreciate it. I was having a lot of trials on different Pcs with Win 7/10. But even there the installation stops at the end. Tried it on Old iMac 2011 model with USB at the back.. Still have same Message ""USB Accessories Disabled - Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices". Yes I watched your video many times to do Exactly what you did .. I am using the original A-500 pro AC adaptor (PSA-230ES) not same as you have shown but (input :100-240 V - 50-60Hz 250mA. / Output : 9V ----- 0.5A 4.5W) and switched the Power Selector (17) .. But the Manual say it must be on USB selector during Setup after RESTART. Not sure what is the Purpose of USB & Power Selector. I Dont know what exactly is a Powered USB Hub, I have this have from Cardpase www.capdase.com/products/7-in-1-hub-d2c-usb-c-pd-multiport-adapter?_pos=6&_sid=cb38a51a3&_ss=r. Really don't know what to do since apple support could not help .. Roland support didn't answer yet. I am sure You could help Thanks

Will the Roland get power from the iPad through usb?

  • @meti6505

    @meti6505

Like stated in the video, the Roland gets powered thru usb by the iPad. BUT it doesn’t get enough power. So you need to power your Roland with its own external 9v wall plug power supply (watch the correct polarity!). Another way to go might be to use a powered usb hub. If the usb hub provides enough power, you might power the Roland thru the hub instead of the iPad. I can’t test this because I don’t have the Roland anymore. But this setup worked with a Studiologic Acuna. Hope this helps. Marc

meti6505 thank you! I have the A-300 now and I learned this since originally posting my comment. I am a bass player and I'm using mine to control the Moog Model-D app for iOS in a live setting. I made a way to power the board from my pedal power supply that is also powering my effects and preamp pedals. So it worked out.

@@Prodbass Very well. I'm glad it works. Could you please just check the current output of your pedal power supply. It seems like other people have still problems and I assume it's because their power supply is too weak. See my answers to Olimpicus and Alexandr iuneWind

meti6505 I did some research and it seems the A-300 needs to be powered from a 9v power source with at least 300mA and Center Negative polarity. If you are powering it through a Pedalboard power supply you need to understand the power requirements of each pedal and make sure the total combined amount of mA doesn't exceed the total output of the power supply. And there are adaptors for polarity in case a power supply is center positive instead.

i used your tips and it worked... for a little time. Then it sended an error message again. I tried the same again multiple times with the same result. I used an alternative OTG cable, maybe that's the reason, or maybe my AC adaptor isn't powerful enough. Anyone else had a similar experience?

  • @meti6505

Sorry to hear that you still have problems. Looks like the Roland A series need a lot of current (the original PSU is rated @ 2'000mA!). So I would suggest to use an original Roland AC adapter, or a no name but with enough power. Mine is providing 2'500mA and I never had problems. It's really high power consumption for a standard MIDI keyboard, maybe on purpose so you need to buy Roland's original PSU... Check the polarity and change the position of the switch to "AC". You might also try to use a powerful USB hub (see comment I wrote for Peter Rodriguez). Hoper this helps.

Hi Leon. I don’t have the Roland anymore, but when I used it with my iPad back then everything worked fine including the controls. Some apps offer a convenient MIDI learn function (e.g. Kong’s Module).
