Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In How To Transfer Artwork: Paper Stencil/Mask (Part 2), I demonstrate transferring an image to the painting surface using a cut paper stencil and/or mask. I also share tips and tricks for registration purposes when using more than one stencil.

much easier to allign if you draw a line on your contour stencil and the outside of your board(lines are easier to match up than matching a peice of paper in a corner;)

I really appreciate your videos, they have been very helpful. I'm a couple videos late asking this question. I often use vinyl masking and have issues with when to pull the vinyl or tape. I have been using 4030 to prevent bleed under the vinyl. If I wait too long the masking is difficult to remove, if I don't wait long enough it pulls the paint. Any tips on knowing when to pull the masking?

I'm glad you find them helpful! I appreciate you watching and thanks for taking the time to comment! Roughly, how long are you talking about when you said "if I wait too long the masking is difficult to remove"? The reason I ask is masking tape, even good quality vinyl tape, is not designed to stay on for extended periods of time. If you need something masked for longer than a few days it's probably a good idea to pull the tape and mask it again with fresh tape. Use quality tape too. It's a little more expensive, but there's a huge difference in quality. When you say "If I don't wait long enough it pulls the paint", what kind of surface are you painting on and what prep work are you doing prior to painting? There are two types of adhesion we deal with in the world of airbrushing, mechanical and chemical. Chemical adhesion occurs when layering paint. If you're using Createx products there are no windows, meaning you can spray another layer whenever you choose (a day, a week or even a month later). The paint will adhere to the previously applied layer chemically. Does that make sense? Mechanical adhesion is sanding the surface prior to painting in order to give the paint a "tooth" to bite in and stick. You can cheat the system by not cleaning or sanding the surface to be painted if you don't plan to do any masking (although I recommend against doing so). However, if you plan to use masking techniques in your artwork it is vital to properly clean and prepare the surface prior to starting your work for proper adhesion. It is also very important to allow the paint to properly cure before applying any masking. I normally wait at least an hour depending on the environment. Air movement helps tremendously when it comes to curing water-based paint. One final tip, it's also important to use 4030 or Transparent Base over any metallic, pearl, etc., and allow the intercoat to cure before applying masking tape to prevent the tape from lifting portions of those types of paint. It's difficult to guess what is happening when I can't actually see it. I hope this helps. If not, I'm more than happy to try again.

@@wickedartstudio Thanks for the answer. I am painting metal. Primer is scuffed and rattle can base color coat is applied. That is scuffed with red Scotchbrite. I am using Oracal 813 vinyl cut in a stencil cutter. I seal with 4030 let dry and paint with 4030 added to the Createx. If I pull the vinyl the next day it seems like the 4030 bonds the vinyl to the substrate; the vinyl is really difficult to remove - especially places like the insides of letters. On the other hand, if I pull the masking in a few minutes I run a big risk of lifting the paint I just put down. Is there a good way to tell when the vinyl is safe to remove? BTW the best tip was to leave the air on all the time - what a difference that makes in reducing tip dry. Thanks

I've never used the Oracal vinyl. So I've no idea if that could have anything to do with the issues you're experiencing. It might have too much adhesive. Using 4030 could also be part of/or the issue. What ratio are you mixing the 4030? 4030 actually dehydrates the paint faster and helps it cure stronger/harder. Waiting until the next day to pull the vinyl is plenty of time to allow paint mixed with 4030 to fully cure which could cause issues pulling vinyl with a high paint build. You might try using transparent base to keep paint from bleeding under the vinyl rather than 4030. You should be able to pull the vinyl as soon as the color is applied and has been dried with air movement. I normally give it 10 to 20 minutes before I pull vinyl just to give the paint a little more time to dry because some of the water-based colors are easily scratched when fresh. Let me know if that helps...

Hi! Great videos and tips! I was thinking, you seem to like painting to white base and go darker from there. How would you paint over black/dark base?! Have a great day and keep these videos coming! -Anssi

Hi Anssi. I do prefer to work over a white, or light base most of the time. When I'm working over black, or a dark surface, I'll normally begin by spraying a white or lighter basecoat to work off of. I'll demonstrate how I do that in a future video. Thanks for the suggestion!
