I was looking through some old comments and saw this one. It's a great question and I think I'll make a video on it. Basically though, use SUMIF or a Pivot Table. More to come...

Is there a way to set it to where it automatically adds up all the values in the cells above the total in the same row; so that way you can add more horizontal rows without having to readjust the code for the total? Thanks!

If you use the insert row function in the middle of the range that you're adding, the range will expand in your formula. Another thing you could do is put the sum function one column to the right and just make the range extend down the entire column such as =SUM(A1:A). There's no stopping point on that range so it adds all of column A.

I am looking for an answer, hope you can help. On Excel, if you want to extend the range of cells that a formula relates to, you double click the cell that contains the formula, it shows you the outline of the cells in the range, then you simply click and drag the outline to extend the cells in the range. I.e. you can add another cell that was missed. Sheets doesn't seem to let you click and drag the outline, instead I can only change the range by typing the cell number into the formula to include it. Surely there is a click and drag functionality for this rather than typing? Can you help? Rose

Yeah, I think you've gotta re-highlight the whole range.

In the world of having to track crypto rewards.... this review of google sheets is marvelous. I am anticipating the worst case scenario that I have to manually track each action in the crypto space.

Hi! I just can´t add the numbers on the same column, it keeps me giving 0 as a result, and Im using the exact same formula. Also, other columns can be added with no problem, but the one that Im trying to is just giving me 0, what can I do?

They're probably not being recognized as numbers. Run the ISNUMBER function on them. See here support.google.com/docs/answer/3093296?hl=en

Great video but what about when you have rows continually being added and don't want redo the formula each time? A running sum for all rows

I depends how your Sheet is laid out. You can add the SUM formula to the top and use a range like A2:A. That would select everything starting A2 and below.

I have my business credit card gateway auto add rows to a google sheet through a flow and have never been able to figure out how to keep a running total without having to reformulate it each time. Another issue is that it always adds a row to the very next row even if it is the footer therefore making the latest transaction be the footer where I'd have the running totals displayed. Thanks for the response! Great tutorials!

Select the cell that you want to change, go to Format, then Number. Choose what you want from there. The $ sign is not part of the result, it's just the format applied to it.

how do I keep a running total of a column if I update it every day? I do food shopping daily and I keep putting a new total in which changes the end cell of a formula so I have to change the formula every day which is a pain. Thanks for helping...

Maybe you left the = sign out of your formula. If it's still not working, perhaps your numbers are really text. Check them with the ISNUMBER() function.

I am doing the steps on here but it is not showing the total. Please help.

Check for spaces in your numbers. That would make the spreadsheet think they are text.

I want to sum up multiple rows going across, everytime I try, it jumbles up everything

It will work if you just type the formula in =SUM(A1:A3) and change the A1 and A3 with whatever the bounds of your data are.

I cant add like that it won't add ☹🙁
