How to tile a herringbone wall

SUBSCRIBE Learn how tile the right way
How to install diagonal Herringbone plank porcelain tile on a wall to create a feature behind a freestanding tub. This plank tile was installed on a diagonal on a herringbone pattern. Plank tiles are considered large format tiles, these tiles were 6”x24” and are made to look like a pickled wood. a leveling system was used to help install a lippage free flat wall. A leveling system can be very helpful with large format tiles to achieve a better finish. When installing tile, and especially a herringbone pattern it is critical to stay square and true. if the tile becomes skewed, the grout lines will either stat to open or narrow, or even both, making it impossible to keep the corners aligned.

Sal reminds me of a mentor I had in the trade about 20 years ago. He was from Poland though and he was very good at tile, like Sal is. Thanks for your uploads, I just recently got back into tile and Sal is my go to for up to date knowledge from someone that know the proper way to tile.

Ive done a bit of tile with much help from you and others online. I must say you make it look so easy. It is stressful for me, a rough carpenter, to do jobs like this. I tend to rush and my jobs are sloppy (during ... Not in the end). You can't stress enough how important layout and planning is on a tile job, especially herringbone. I appreciate your dedication to the craft... And would hire you in a heart beat to do my bathroom in Michigan, whatever the cost. Keep up the good work. You are highly respected and anybody i know who tries their own tile jobs tunes in to Sal first! Cheers

I wonder if a scrap cheater tile with a 45 cut on top would help with those measurements up against the ceiling? Like a fixed number (6" maybe) and then hot-glue a shim to the top of the 45 to help maintain proper expansion joint at the ceiling. Then you can measure to the factory butt-edge of the cheater tile and add 6" instead of trying to get the tape measure to read properly up against the ceiling. I hate trying to pull those measurements with the retractable tape. Just a thought.

I have a few questions if you don't mind answering them. First off I would ask how do you come up with the pattern for the herringbone?(because it looks like sometimes you can stack the pattern where it looks different from a one stack pattern) 2. Why would you run into not being level plumb and square? (Obviously if you don't space them with the spacers correctly but any other reason why it would run off?) 3. Would it make a difference if the walls you are running the tile on are not perfectly straight or level/plumb and if so how would you go about fixing the wall or can you still do this pattern with seals that aren't perfectly square or level and plumb

Sal can you make a video on pricing in a generic way just to give new installers an idea of how to charge for jobs. Some people charge by the square foot others by how many days it may take and others by the hour. Some jobs are very hard to price like stairs, special designs and I know prices are different by location but just a general idea would be good and also educate the public out there Not To Be Cheap!!! Im only wondering cause im laying out a shower walls where iv to wrap herringbone around and if i just go off center im cutting off a tiny piece but it would look terrible wrapping it but if i go in middle of my center line iv better cuts but each side they are going in opposite directions , am i making any sense 🤣🙈

Nice work sal. I've got a herringbone wall to tile next weekend. I'm a tiler 15 years. I've done herringbone before but not done the wrap around the internal corner. I've seen your other video which was helpful. My problem is the length of the tile im using is the exact same as the 2 widths with no spacer. So with the minimum 1.5mm spacer it knocks it out of square on the edge. This is going to knock out the grout joint in the corner. Any ideas? I've mentioned about having a frame tile around the perimeter of each wall which would essentially make each wall seperate from the other. Cheers from New Zealand
